This is the end and this even feels like a good end, the anime just stopped and could have used another two or three episodes.

Want to know a funny thing? I just figured out a few years back that Marron and Chiaki are totally doing it in this volume xD took me long enough, but I guess as a child I just didn't see it. I was naive and innocent LOL

That was it with my re-read this year. See you in 2017, Marron aka Jeanne ;D

*SQUEEEEEEE* ARINA TANEMURA HAS DONE IT AGAIN!!! (And this is one of her earliest works!) I swear, I can't get away from this woman's artwork, and have now read four of her series and one oneshot. Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne has been on my to-read and to-watch for quite some time, so I'm glad I finally bit the bullet and dove into the manga. And promptly devoured it in barely two days. (Completely online, too! Normally, I despise reading manga online, and only speed-read series if my library has physical copies of the volumes. This was a nice exception.)

The series' premise is sorta what you get when you combine DN Angel and Sailor Moon: a magical girl who "steals" paintings that houses demons and corrupts people's hearts, and whose biggest strength in the purity of her heart. Arina's art style is perfect for this genre: cutesy, but not without its emotional punches once in a while. And absolutely PERFECT for fluffy, romantic scenes! Chiaki and Maron are my new anime/manga OTP! *squeee*

(Also: I'm fully aware that it's a tad too convenient for things like abuse, neglect, and awful actions to dismissed under the excuse "they're possessed by a demon!" and have them be totally redeemed without question after said demon is defeated. However, this is clearly a series written for a younger audience, so simplicity is more acceptable as a plot device, because the emotions of the main characters are what carries the actual story. And for a series about the reincarnation of Jeanne d'Arc - better known as Joan of Arc - who defeats demons by throwing a pin into a painting and wiping it blank and saying that she's on a mission from God..... you kinda expect that level of simplicity in explaining the origin of evil.)

If I had one complaint about the art style... per usual a la Arina Tanemura, it's nearly IMPOSSIBLE to remember which character is which unless they're directly addressed by someone else, especially with the men. It doesn't help that the manga pages are in black and white, so you can't just go with "oh, he's the blonde, and he's the redhead." It's more like "okay, on this page, that's one light/dark-haired one... and on this page, another light/dark-haired one... and I think they're different guys??" The girls are a bit easier to tell apart, because they have the advantage of a variety of hair styles, but it can still be confusing. Though I imagine it's easier to double check on who is who with physical copies of the manga... -.-"

Aside from that, the main characters themselves are enjoyable to read. Maron is the standard Arina Tanemura Heroine, who's ultra sweet and bubbly and positive, but is secretly suffering and being crushed under the weight of her pain. Not gonna lie, I have such a soft spot for these kind of heroines in manga/anime. Chiaki can be both an adorably charming love interest, and an immature brat who's way too possessive of Maron. His dad is confusing as hell, both in looks and in personality; the online translations didn't help by calling him "brother" for a while... unless there's two of them?! Dammit, Arina-san! Make your character designs more distinctive! Miyako is about as Tsundere as you can get (right down to calling the guy she actually loves, "baka!"), but is so incredibly loyal to Maron, as childhood friends. Her obsession with capturing Jeanne is made clear in the second or third volume, and it actually really touched my heart. Fin is...... well, her back story was probably the most interesting part of the story, though her motives are rather skewed towards the end. And poor Access! The guy tries so hard to win over his shy/stubborn lady love, you can't help but root for him.

Kinda-but-not-really-a-spoiler-but: I appreciate how we never actually see God's, or Kami-sama, physical form. Because. You know. He's God. Same with the Devil, or Maou. Very clever touch.

A few several notes into spoiler territory:

Overall, I recommend this adorable little series. Be forewarned of a few darker themes, though nothing graphic is said or shown. Definitely a new favorite of mine.

I didn't like the ending at all ctfu

The series itself had... ideas that I thought were great (formative to me then, and would be formative now) - the idea that girls mask their weaknesses into tougher images is a really cool one, there was a bit on consent that was cool, there was a bit on trust being the main factor of a relationship, and, it must be said, the romance was very romantic. There were also ideas that were hopelessly heteronormative. The Adam and Eve bit, I cannot tell you just how stupid it was - and it informed everything about the story. Yes, of course Eve is born of Adam's ribs and of course she eats apples because women "are just" better with emotions and more impulsive. Ya rab... and it informed everything about the story too. Finn and Access was the best bit even though Finn could be better by truly being tragic and not this flip flop shit. Nion, no words. Literally sexually assaulted Maron but it's fine because he didn't mean it. (Yup.) Chiaki and Maron get together a billion times and go apart a felt billion times because Tanemura is heterosexual and into her own male characters. That's it. A lot of this manga is just based on vibes and whatever she likes. That being said, compared to Sailor Moon, which this is obviously following in terms of footsteps, this attempted an overarching story and it achieves them... some. That being said, Sailor Moon didn't timejump the characters to an ending where I have to read about a 24 year old HOUSEWIFE. BE SO VERY FOR REAL RN.

Overall rating: 2.5/5

I loved how this series ended. It was so beautiful. Everyone ended up happy.
Maron passed on her power of being reborn to Finn, who was in turn reborn as her baby, Natsuki. (Natsuki was also Finn's name in her previous human life.) Access was reborn as Miyako's child, Shinji, who instantly fell in love with Natsuki at first sight.
Maron, of course, has now married Chiaki. Miyako has married Minazuki. Maron's parents have also remarried.
------------------
I won't post spoilers of how Maron/Jeanne won the battle against Satan, but I love that it involved her being herself. And, props to Finn for being the wonderful "full" angel she had become, and making such a sacrifice for Maron.
-----------------
I also want to comment on Tanemura's "free talk" columns that are down the sides of the columns. Tanemura had been getting notes telling her to quit Ribon, the magazine that KKJ appeared in in Japan. This made her feel worthless, and she locked herself in her room for 10 days, only having music to keep her company.
Please don't send amazing people like Tanemura bad notes like that. Her manga are wonderful, so I am sure she is, too. We need wonderful mangakas like this to continue producing such emotional mangas like this. I appreciate her work very much.

Re-Read

So, that’s it with my Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne re-read! That’s a wrap, folks! So this will be a two-part review, one for the Volume and one for the whole series. Let’s go!

Review

Volume 7 has probably my favorite cliffhanger resolve/opening joke of the whole series. A plot point that could have been easily dragged again is just resolved in a page. Thank you very much.

So, the story concludes here and wraps up all the plot points. Maron and Chiaki confess their love and do "the deed" and prove that Maron is still pure afterwards, because true love, bitches! Maron‘s parents also reunite after the spell Satan put on them is gone and the Kusakabe family has a fresh start. Well-deserved.

Arina creates her own version of Genesis is in this one and it’s really interesting to read her take on God/Satan/Paradise. It’s a refreshing take we didn’t have before. It also fits very well within the established universe.

The highlight of this volume are however Finn and Access, whose tragic love story still makes me cry. Not only does Access remain the best character of the series, I‘m also pretty sure without is commitment and trust in Finn to do the right thing, they would all be pretty fucked, let’s be real. Their reunion and confession is beautiful and powerful and while short-lived still concludes in a satisfying way.

Finn‘s relationship with the devil is also pretty interesting. Because here we get the "main antagonist" in a more sympathetic light than before.

The epilogue is a bit "tropey" and plays directly into the "Babies Ever After" ending, but I‘m not bothered by that. I‘m just still sad Arina never gave us a proper Natsuki/Shinji spin off. Imagine that instead of Shinshi Doumei Cross or My Magic Fridays. We could have had it all (cut to Adele music playing dramatically in the background).

If I have a small issue with this volume then it is that the story concludes almost too easily for my taste. While Arina nicely defies expectations and doesn’t choose the classic "final battle" it still feels like a way too easy solution that lacks a certain momentum. It’s anticlimactic. There is no way around that. Still, I enjoy this volume a lot.

I could have done without the bonus story though. Silk is like a non-character and Noin the fucking worst and I can’t with the excuses made for him.

Wrap Up

I said in my first review during this re-read that I was scared to dive back into the series, because I loved it so much in my early teens and that I was afraid to end up being disappointed. Thankfully, that didn’t happen. Mostly.

While I‘m certainly not as much in love with the series as I was when I was younger, I still enjoy it a great deal.

Arina Tanemura has one of the most beautiful art styles I have ever seen and I still just love looking at her work.

The story also remains mostly interesting, though I‘m more aware now how it can seem a little bit unpolished at times and how she often chooses a more "easy fix" instead of diving deeper into her own lore. She has complex themes, but seems to shy away from further explanations.

The characters are mostly loveable. There are certain problems with male jealousy, but that comes probably more from a cultural background and what seems appropriate than being an "Arina thing", because it’s a trope used in many Mangas and Anime.

Obviously Access is still the best character.

The romances are super adorable and probably Arina‘s biggest strength here. She just gives you all the fuzzies.

I think my biggest grip comes from the Noin storyline, which you probably can tell from my reviews every since he first popped up. I think the Anime did Noin better, but don’t take my word for it, it’s been ages.

Personally I‘m glad I re-read the series. It’s been a great overall experience to dive back into something that once has been so important to me.

Well, Time Stranger Kyoko next, folks?

i refuse to rate these out of nostalgia (what's new?)

after watching a movie with mimi on thursday, i was reminded of an episode in the anime version of this manga. now, i've never been into anime nor manga, really. this series was an exception. in year five, one of my friends showed it to me. we had met in kindergarten before i moved schools, and the only reason we stayed in touch was because of our parents. we had been attending the same tutoring place and we both did rhythmic gymnastics (though she was far, far, better than me). she recommended the anime to me because it had rhythmic gymnastics and i LATCHED onto it. i watched the anime (i don't believe if i finished it on first watch) and i found the first volume in store, so i begged my parents to buy it for me. it's somewhere in the back room. i was convinced there were no more copies of the manga and i was so lucky being one of the only people in australia to have a copy of one (i was eleven and wanted to be special).

i revisited it a few years later. memory is hazy and i can't remember exactly when. i'm inclined to say year 8 due to the haze, but i have a feeling it was much later, like year 10 or 11. i reread volume one, finally finished the anime (!!) and then i let it rest for a while again.

i couldn't sleep thursday night (...or rather, friday morning) so i got out of bed and watched the episode the movie reminded me of. a nice spoonful of nostalgia before bed. then i got up at a time so disastrous i will not specify and for some reason, felt compelled to find the other volumes online.

success! and so that's how i spent my day. or around 3 hours of it. (then i moved onto season 4 of the magnus archives.) let me summarise, the storyline is horribly problematic in aspects. i do not recommend you read it. halfway through, i wanted to give up. but i had to persevere for my naive eleven-year-old self because she deserves it. the heterosexual power dynamics are neck-deep in the patriarchy. but for the sake of nostalgia, i pushed through, choosing to focus on the aspects i DID like!

first, miyako is way nicer in the manga. in the anime, she's usually used as the funny, pushy best-friend sidekick (except for that one episode of her backstory) and she proves to be quite annoying in this aspect. she is much more developed in the manga, with lots of minicomics that demonstrate her close (bordering on romantic) relationship with maron. oriana approved.

the plot was pretty back and forth to me. some chapters were entirely exposition, and there was a lot of lore that wasn't sprinkled in throughout other chapters and just got dumped on us at the very end. and all the "fights" were pretty anticlimactic because we always knew what was going to happen.

it was also very difficult for me to believe maron and chiaki's romance. there was NO way she was just. in love with him. there was nothing there. also every time he was like "i want to protect you"? vomit!!!!!!!!! i can't remember whether it was like that in the anime, but i really hope it wasn't (for my former self's sake). if it was... well. i was raised on twilight and free ebooks in the ibooks store. i didn't quite have the best gauge for romance then.

OH and do not get me started on the teacher/student thing. maron would NOT allow herself to be swayed by a pretty teacher. how embarrassing. AND THEN ??? baffled. and then of course chiaki ran in to save the day. because men do all the saving.

i am very. very. thankful. that i did not read this when i was eleven. i think it may have screwed my mind up even more than it already was. (not entirely sure that's true, because i was on wattpad and i read some very interesting works) and i'm glad so much of the anime changed the weird... parts in the manga.

very problematic. do not read. i'm only safe behind my rose-coloured lenses.

Review for complete series

Although seemingly an ordinary girl, Maron lives a double life in which she goes out at night disguised as thief Jeanne to steal paintings. But Jeanne doesn't steal just any paintings - as the reincarnation of Joan of Arc, she only has her eyes set on paintings concealing demons sent by the devil. But it isn't long before the devil sends more than just demons to get in Jeanne's way - the thief Sinbad isn't far behind to try and steal the paintings from right under her nose.

Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne was my first manga and therefore holds an unshakeable place in my heart. I remember the times I watched it on TV, not really knowing what manga or anime was, and just utterly falling in love with Jeanne's violet eyes. It was only by chance that I came across the manga in a bookstore - that was the beginning of my manga collection which now, a decade later, would put most libraries to shame.

Of course, the biased and nostalgic me would say this is the greatest manga out there and it is absolutely flawless. Yet I also believe that there is no such thing as a flawless work. Reading it now is different from reading it years ago, but it is no less enjoyable. It stands out from other magical girl series in many ways!

For one thing, Maron and Jeanne look completely different - it always irks me how most magical girls are never recognized by other characters despite the obvious. Unfortunately, Sinbad can't boast the same, but at least he's got a mask and is found out quite early in the story. The concept of Joan of Arc's reincarnation, the demon-infested paintings, and the character's motivations strike me as much more plausible.

Tanemura's art style has always been a major point in her works - provided you like typical shoujo style. Fortunately, I've always liked the shoujo style and I think Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne is showing the author at her best. Although it isn't as refined as her later works, it has the most heart. The characters are adorable, believable and they feel. You can easily see Tanemura pouring her heart into this series while, in more recent ones, I always feel like she is just trying too hard.

The same holds true for the comedy. The humour in her older works has always been a major plus point for me. It is often very simple - just in the expressions characters make. I could never decide what I liked most about this series; the humour, the art, the characters, the emotion. Not to mention that this series also draws a heavy focus on friendship and family. Even side characters get their moments to shine.

Like any other serires, Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne has its weak points and it won't be everyone's cup of tea. Yet I can't find it in my heart to point them out as I hold this series so dear, whatever flaws it holds now come to me as adorable absurdities.

Art - ★★★★★

Volume - I enjoyed the ending. It was bittersweet.

"Manga is an unusual medium (as is anything meant for entertainment). You read it casually, and you can throw it away casually. Or it can move you, make you feel, and change the way you think. It can enrich your life... it depends on you." - Arina Tanemura.

This is a good series, even if it has a push-and-go relationship; it is nice to see the character's growth and how their relationship develops. There are a lot of obstacles the characters have to go through in the fantasy that is this story. A lot of it is intertwined with religious figures and beliefs, but at its core, it is a story of friendship and relationships and how one tries to push through, and sometime's it's okay to need help.

Overall this was a pretty good series, but the ending was a bit anticlimactic, at least for my personal tastes and what I enjoy.

I won't spoil the ending, all I say is that it felt like a lot of build up, only to fizzle out. And I'm also super picky about epilogues, and time skips, and this one was a bit of a miss.

I am so sorry to massive fans, but I genuinely don't hate this series or anything, I thought it was very cute and fun, and I'm excited to watch the anime now and see all the differences.

P.S. Maron and Chiaki are absolutely adorable, I love them so much!

Very sweet series. Everything wraps up very neatly and happily on the end, which I think suits the tone of the series just fine. It is not a perfect series, but it is definitely an enjoyable one. Also if you have seen the anime, you'll find the last few books are a bit different from their on screen counterparts, which for me was no problem at all and kind of added some freshness to the story, since I wasn't already acquainted with all the details.

This was a very cute series: part SAINT TAIL, part CARDCAPTOR SAKURA and part its own story, it developed easily, without becoming excessively monotone with the demon sealing plot.
The love story between Maron and Chiaki was very sweet and I liked the little resolution we get at the end, with Access and Fin.
All in all a very enjoyable summer read.

Yeah... that ending was pretty lame. All the loose ends were tied up oh so neatly. The whole thing was really cliche. Everything ended so conveniently. I'll admit the reincarnation was a little cute... but still.
