I really liked this book! And not just because of the information re fighting/preventing cancer, but also because it's just a really good book on tea. I've read a few books on tea in the past and compared to those, this is more accessible and the recipes are simpler and doable. Main message of course is to DRINK TEA FOR HEALTH as well as pleasure, which we already do, but I hadn't heard of kimmun tea, so I'll have to go hunt some down. There were other many good ideas here for tea drinking and eating that I hadn't thought of before or tried. The author is also the founder of Tea Spot, which in my opinion offers the best Earl Grey blend here in the US, almost makes up for us not having a Mariage Freres close by.
Regardless of the fact that this book has a focus on the relationship between cancer and tea, it has a ton of fun facts and useful information on tea in general. As I continue to try new teas (I am a big believer in loose leaf but am not proud enough to use a tea bag), her book really resonated with me - she's definitely spot on with descriptions of the different types. The book is laid out really well and includes recipes.
For those who think a tea shop owner has a conflict of interest in writing this book, I implore you to look at the timeline. From what I gathered Maria amassed an enormous knowledge on the health benefits of tea during her own cancer journey prior to starting her shop and didn’t just decide to research and sell a book after starting her business. It’s not like she schleps her own blends in the book either; it’s purely informational and not promotional as she wants everyone to find their best tea groove to live well even if her company’s tea doesn’t do it for them.
I think this book should be on everyone’s shelf! Especially in a time when we’re all looking to be more health conscious, bolster our immune systems, and keep chronic disease at bay. Steeping techniques, history, flavor profiles, and health benefits with caffeine and antioxidant levels. It doesn’t stop at tea, but gives a comprehensive guide to incorporating a 5 cup tea habit into an overall healthy lifestyle which is the best way to sustain a long life.
If you’re brand new to tea Maria provides a guide to choosing types and flavors that you’ll enjoy, and if you’re a seasoned tea drinker she gives new recipes and ways to savor the entirety of your Tea of the Month stash that keeps piling up. I came away from it with a renewed interest in cold brewing!
I picked this book up as an enthusiastic tea drinker. This book is chock full of the benefits of drinking tea. It has some wonderful recipes. I upped my tea intake after reading this. I also choose healthier teas. I hope the claims are true and it can help fight cancer for anyone battling this horrible disease.
As a Cancer survivor (several times) I am always looking to improve my diet and lifestyle to keep cancer at bay. I found this book to give me a new prospective on tea and its health benefits. I have changed my tea drinking habits and am loving the information and the teas and ways to drink them. Totally love this book and give it to others as another item in their health Tool box - you don't have to have cancer to benefit from this informative and beautifully illustrated book.
Been meaning to read this book for years. I first met Maria (the author) back on like 2017 ? She gave a talk at a women’s retreat I went to. She also organized a tour of her company (the Tea Spot) and I learned a lot and it was the start of my tea obsession. Now I work at a local tea company and I’m their primary tea maker. I still buy from The Tea Spot as it’s a great company and thank Maria for starting my love of tea.
I do believe that tea is a healthy addition to someone's lifestyle, but I do find it somewhat hard to accept all of the author's facts when she owns a company that sells loose leaf teas. It seems to be somewhat self serving. I also don't think there's enough information here to fill a book of this length. It feels padded.
My mom bought me this book after a day out together. Found it really informative. I have always had trouble with drinking hot green teas. Love black tea with milk and sugar. After reading this, I tried cold brewing green tea and what a difference. A new world has opened for me and I’m excited to find a way to drink green tea that I can enjoy and reap the health benefits!
A lot of good information in this book by a cancer survivor. She's convinced me to learn how to brew fresh tea rather than buy it pre-bagged. Caution: there is some language, which I've noticed is common among cancer survivors. Fighting cancer is a brutal battle (which I've done twice).
I liked that this book is not only about “cancer” but also gives you perspective on mindfulness history and ritual. Not every “fact “ in it is true or backed up by science but it made me go look for it.
This had some great information about tea and how it works with your body. I enjoyed it. Purchased it for a relative with cancer, but had to read it, first.
A lot about tea you can get from googling, but it’s much more than tea. It includes some healthy practices and foods. One thing though, super tired of seeing yoga and meditation everywhere.
A treat for tea lovers, but especially those with cancer concerns. Lots of tea facts and fascinating history, with a focus on maximizing wellness benefits.
This is a great book for tea lovers, like myself, and for people wishing to learn more about tea. And if you have been stricken by cancer, it is a must read . Follow the author recommendations and try different types of tea. Add lemon or mint to green tea if you don't find any taste on it. It would make a great drink at any time of TBE day. And I do believe in the anti cancer p properties of the drink.
Fascinating book! Sarah gave this book to me for Christmas along with several samples of green tea. I have been drinking tea for a while now, and I am amazed how interesting the subject of tea is. Having had my mastectomy prior to Christmas, this was a great gift. The title "Cancer Hates Tea" grabbed me immediately. I found the scientific part of this book fascinating. While the author is not a scientist, she documents the claims she makes about tea. Even if you don't have cancer ... this book is awesome. The author is cheeky and tells the reader in a very straightforward way, what she recommends ... especially to the person experiencing cancer.
When I saw this book at a local tea shop, I bought this book out of curiosity.
I have been a loose leaf tea drinker for many years. I do not have cancer, I do have a genetic condition called Hemochromatosis (iron overload) that has ruined my liver and digestive system. As part of a low iron diet does include tea with every meal. Tea also has properties of blocking iron in the digestive system. Hemochromatosis is the opposite of someone that is anemic, I make too much blood and have some blood removed every six months to help lower my iron levels. Since I am a tea drinker, perhaps this is why I do not have cancer is an unknown. One can google “hemochromatosis and diet” and am sure somewhere “tea” will show up as part of the diet. Besides Tea, there is another odd connection between Hemochromatosis and Cancer: An Oncologist is often used to treat both medical disorders.
I did enjoy the books layout and the information about different teas around the world. I learned more about tea than I have before. I look forward trying the new teas that this book discusses. I tend to drink white and green teas plain without added sugars and without herbal formulas. I tend to add sugar to oolong and black teas as well as chia and other herbal formulas.
Cancer aside, the book about “Tea” still makes this book a very good read for me.
What a delightful book about tea: starting with it's history and going right on through to it's future. Maybe someday we will all drink tea and be more well. My theory is even if it doesn't have the health benefits touted in this book, what's it hurt to drink it?!
If you love drinking tea, or your just interested in learning about how to brew it, this is a great book for you. Everything you need to know on brewing, tea types, and all the healthy benefits.
Solid research and data, compelling case. I read the book and then ordered a matcha set and a bunch of green and blacks teas in order to put the advice into action.
