The Storm Trilogy #3

Vengeance of a Storm

Rate this book
The Four Vales stands on a knife-edge and its people hold their breath as the threat of war looms. With their hopes failing, can those with enough courage and strength left stand firm against the tide of madness that threatens to wash away the fragile peace of the land?

As the shadows deepen and the bloody grip of the Brotherhood begins to tighten, the capital city Karick is plunged into chaos. With its streets running with blood and the hatred of those orchestrating it, the storm clouds gather, readying the Valian people for war.

Far north, Cassana, daughter of the Lord of the North Vales is beset by danger, the shadows full of blades and her ears full of treachery. To the south, the renegade stonemason Khadazin hides in his sanctuary, nursing his wounds and his desire for revenge, unaware of what is happening in the wider world, uncertain of the knowledge he has and the allies that will stand with him.

Seemingly thwarted at every turn, can those still cherishing peace stop the madness? Will they have the strength to rise up and thwart the promise of war before it is too late?

Vengeance of a Storm is the thrilling conclusion to the Storm Trilogy, a gripping tale of treachery, intrigue, courage and sacrifice that thrusts the reader once again, deep into the heart of this epic adventure.

It has been months since I have finished this book and I think my reluctance to pen this review stems from my realisation that doing so means I have officially completed this series and have to say goodbye to this world!

I think that, in itself, says how much I have enjoyed this fantasy trilogy. Each book has continued to explore and open up both the geographical and political terrain that marks this series as both profound in depth and intrigue, and this may just be the series' crowning glory.

Whilst I certainly have loved the two previous instalments, this book saw past characters and individual plot lines combine to make a breathtaking conclusion of epic proportions. Intrigue ran high and action dominated much of the narrative, which made this book beg to be read in one sitting, despite its substantial length.

My fangirling over this series may run a little too high, but that is only because I want everyone to experience this world with me! When you have nothing negative to state about a book, when multiple characters' stories seem to become your own, and when a world has sucked you in so entirely that you forget what reality you belong to, you know you have found your perfect book.

It has been a while in the making but at long last it was time to venture back to the Four Vales for the final instalment of this trilogy and immediately the reader is taken on a fast-paced action ride as the cliff-hangers at the end of the last novel are played out in Havensdale and Highwater.

Once again Anthony Lavisher has produced a novel of real quality written at an excellent pace with the characters really coming to life from the pages and transporting the reader to believe that they are witnessing the events that unfold before their very eyes. The action is spread across the many areas of the Four Vales but the author achieves this well as the reader is not left hanging too long from the ‘what happens next’ moments at the end of chapters. At times, I was wondering how the story was going to pan out and what the true identity of certain characters were but again the author does not disappoint with all loose threads from the previous two novels being dealt with in a believable manner. After building up a good collection of characters in the first two novels I was pleased that the author resisted any temptation to introduce even more characters in this final part of the trilogy as the reader could have become overwhelmed but having said that, nobody from the previous adventures was forgotten, with everyone playing their part – even Flotsam the Donkey is not overlooked! Lies, deceit and betrayal – who will survive the final showdowns across the Four Vales?

Well I am off to raise a glass to Anthony and enjoy a well-deserved pint of Campbell’s Own followed by a couple of glasses of Burning Leaf and await the next novel from a truly great author.

Concluding the epic Storm Trilogy, ‘Vengeance of a Storm’ is another incredibly confident, excellently constructed novel by Anthony Lavisher. Events in the Four Vales are well and truly in motion by this point in the saga and ‘Vengeance’ hurtles along at a ‘just one more page’ pace; the various threads that Lavisher has expertly spun smoothly weaving their way together and towards conclusion. That the pace has picked up for this book doesn’t mean that the carefully considered, descriptive style of the previous instalments is lost however; ‘Vengeance’ is just as much a treat for logophiles as those hungry for action.

Without wishing to give anything away, plot strands, which are resolved, are done so in a natural, organic way that doesn’t feel contrite or overly neat. The author strikes a fine balance between giving readers the closure that they desire and upholding the feeling of reality that has been prevalent throughout the trilogy.

As the fates of heroes, villains and those in between, both old and new, are revealed ‘Vengeance of a Storm’ shows itself to be a perfectly fitting finale that more than does the trilogy justice. Readers who have journeyed through the Four Vales to this point will not be disappointed, while those who starting out at the beginning have something truly outstanding and enjoyable awaiting them.

Finally managed to complete this fantastic fantasy series after the author released the third book. I have really enjoyed being a part of Anthony Lavisher's journey and seeing the striding progress in his writing skill, the storytelling skill was always there!

All characters, plots and story threads were beautifully weaved together to a finale, or is it, as the door could have been left slightly ajar for future tales from the Four Vales. I hope so.

I definitely feel like I would know my way around and who was who if I was ever dropped into the story. A very visual, emotional and satisfying read. Thank you Anthony for Whispers of a Storm, Shadows of a Storm and Vengeance of a Storm.

I've had the pleasure of reading this book twice, first in manuscript and then the final print.
Considering this is a debut, the monumental task that Anthony Lavisher took on and succeeded with is amazing. The plot of this epic is very well thought out and the writing paints vivid pictures of all the scenes. I could clearly picture every location.
All strands of the plot are cleverly drawn together in the final volume leaving the reader with a pleasantly satisfied feeling at the end. Though the story is told from several points of view, I never felt confused when they changed.
The pace ramps up dramatically with a few intensely emotional moments to get sucked into which made me as weepy as some of the characters.
It's clear that Anthony Lavisher's writing has matured during the development of this epic series but I still think that careful, professional editing would really help it to stand out. Hopefully, this will be possible in time because these books provide an excellent escape.
The first half of the final book is very well polished and the second half is by far the most exciting part of the trilogy.
Really, it is quite an unbelievable achievement.
I recommend the whole series to people who have enjoyed fantasies from David Eddings and Tad Williams.

Having read all three books now of this excellent trilogy, I can honestly say these were a revelation. Very well written, intriguing characters, impossible to put down book series. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would. Very highly recommended, must read!

It could be hard to finish a trilogy as you might still have some questions let unanswered or the feeling that the "happy ending" was a bit too easy and too happy...with this book, it was only hard for me because it meant saying goodbye to a beautiful world of fantasy but all my questions were answered without thinking that Anthony Lavisher had rushed through a happy and easy solving of the plot. The characters kept their complexity and their intelligence, free to make their own choices without you witnessing their lives.

Pure entertainment 😉 not much substance or accuracy in storytelling. I don't understand how incompetent Cassana can be and I never want to have someone like her as my leader. She gets into a room knowing that she is going to face her worst enemy and she takes no weapon or guards with her. Some other major characters have an unfinished fate too. The writing is a bit childish and unnecessarily long.

Unfortunately, I had just read the Moontide Quartet before this. This series fares badly in comparison. An open ended conclusion to the story indicates that the author intends to write more. Not interested.
