After losing her father, Avery is the sole guardian of her eight-year-old sister, June. Avery is now charged with June’s safety as well as her own, a nearly impossible task.
Forced to hide deep in the forest and away from the cities overrun by Urthmen, Avery and her sister are constantly hunted. Danger awaits them at every turn. They fear they are the only human beings left, that they are the last of their kind.
But are they truly alone?

After fleeing the only refuge she’s known for much of her life, Avery, along with her sister June and new friends, Will, Oliver and Riley forge through the forest to uncharted territory in search of a better life, in search of other survivors. But Avery soon learns that life beyond the woods is far worse than she ever imagined. She finds that safety does not exist for human beings in a world run by Urthmen.
Hope seems futile.
But Avery refuses to surrender hope and chooses, instead, to push forward and move her group into the heart of danger, to seek out more humans.
Will she and the others survive their journey into the savage lands of Planet Urth?

But late one night, in January of 2010, the stay at home mom of three girls (all under the age of six) had just picked up the last doll from the playroom floor and placed it in a bin when her husband startled her by declaring, “We should write a book, together!” Wearied from a day of shuttling the children to and from school, preschool and Daisy Scouts, laundry, cooking and cleaning, Jennifer simply stared blankly at her husband of fifteen years. After all, the idea of writing a book had been an individual dream each of them possessed for much of their young adult lives. Both had written separately in their teens and early twenties, but without much success. They would write a dozen chapters here and there only to find that either the plot would fall apart, or characters would lose their zest, or the story would just fall flat. Christopher had always preferred penning science fiction stories filled with monsters and diabolical villains, while Jennifer had favored venting personal experiences or writing about romance, as romance was far easier to invent fictitiously than it was to attain in real life. Inevitably though, frustration and day to day life had placed writing on the back burner and for several years, each had pursued alternate (paying) careers. But the dream never died. And Christopher suggested that their dream ought to be removed from the back burner for further examination. When he proposed that he and his wife author a book together on that cold January night, Jennifer was hesitant to reject the idea outright. His proposal sparked a discussion, and the discussion lasted deep into the night. By morning, the idea for the Dark Creations series was born.
The Dark Creations series was written while Jennifer and Christopher continued with their day to day activities and raised their young children. They changed diapers, potty trained and went to story time at the local library between chapter outlines and served as room parents while fleshing out individal sections of the book. Life simply continued. And in some ways, their everyday lives were reflected in the characters of the series. In fact, the main female characters are named after three very important people in their lives: their three daughters. Their likenesses end there, however.
As the story line continues to evolve, so too does the Martucci collaboration. Lunches are still packed, noses are still wiped and time remains a rare and precious commodity in their household in upstate New York, but it is the sound of happy chaos that is the true background music of their writing. They hope that their work, though penned for a young adult audience, will be appreciated by the young of every age, and that all enjoy reading it as much as they enjoyed writing it.

I had already read the first book of this boxed set, and therefore this review is for the second in the series. I had thought that the basic premise for the series was interesting. Unfortunately, the quality of the writing did not improve in the second book. The story did not interest me enough to overcome my frustration with the lack of editing, so I gave up.

Not continuing this series
I read book 1, Planet Urth, and continued on to book 2 because I had sincere hopes that it got better. It didn't. The dialogue, the writing, the errors... Too much for me. I won't be continuing this series.

First of all Its been many, many years since I was a Young adult...sigh...and I absolutely love this set, I was hooked from the first page.
I also love the fact its a husband and wife author team, so were getting both perspectives...genius!
Book one a little slow at the start but really sets the scene and introduces us to the characters and the terrifying land with scary mutated animals that want to kill you and the Urthmen who are hunting you.
Often Ive read YA books and its all about the romance and I prefer the action and gore...yep I know its the zombie apocalyptic addict in me. But these 2 books have a fab balance for those of you that enjoy a love interest too.
The fact we have a young teen who kicks ass, Im a happy bunny, no crying, screamy girly stuff here...phewey! Even June has a bit of her tough sister too and I felt they are both really relatable to the reader.
Great introduction to meeting Will and his brother and Sister too; the authors have delicately introduced Avery to love and you can really feel the awkwardness between them.
They have nailed the action scenes and I have to say the Avery and Lurker scene made my skin crawl to the point I felt a bit sick...loved this...you need to read it to see. So not for the arachnophobe lol!
Book 2 I enjoyed the best as its really has the action packed scenes and brings us right into the fight between the Humans and Urthmen with a fantastic scene on how they meet Sully and Jerico; two war ready lads revenging on the Urthmen. I really love the character Sully; a cheeky chappy and maybe a future triangle love interest for Avery just to throw in the mix and a fantastic introduction to the future book series.

Another dystopian future
I find it entertaining to see how different authors envision dystopian futures. I fail to see why authors can't seem to envision utopian futures, but that's another argument. This story is entertaining and diverting with engaging characters, but, in my opinion, it could use some serious editing. If the books were both about a third shorter the pace and flow of the narrative would be smoother. It's never a good sign when I start skimming ahead to see what is next because the story has become too wordy or boring.

It is easy to imagine this really napping today the planet being destroyed by muscular destruction.Avery is a very strong young lady. Both her and her s June along with other in the book keep you captive and wanting to read their journey to find more humans exciting. Leave you wanting more!

Good read.
This book held my attention. The concept of the aftermath of war was enthralling and I enjoyed reading these authors take on it. Good fiction I thought. I recommend this book. Thanks.

Dystopian tale that kept me riveted.
I can't wait to read more of Avery's story. These first two books need a little more editing, but the story is terrific.The characters are interesting and Avery is an amazing human being.

It's unfortunate, no ending...
These two novels had no ending. After the end of the first novel, I felt I had reached the middle of a novel that actually had a plot. Good thing this was a box set so I could keep reading. Well, book two just went nowhere, and I mean nowhere. No solid story at all. The characters were leaving because of the Lurkers. But they had no idea where they were going. They just walked right out onto the streets where the savage Urthmen lived. What?! Why?! Bangs head on wall.
Book two was pointless. Book one had merit.
The novel is told in first person by Avery, the main character. Her thoughts are too redundant. As soon as you get the emotion of the character, several paragraphs down, a page later, or even a chapter later, she is rehashing the same things, in the same words. The novel could have been told in half as many words.
The first novel typically began most scenes with the character waking and ended them with her falling asleep. Blackouts where common too.
The romantic interest was the only thing that kept me reading, and the main character screwed that up as well. I don't understand the romantic issue that developed between Avery and Will in the second novel. One moment the scene was sparking with electricity and then the next, the characters are mad at each other. I reread like three times and determined that another paragraph needs to be written for clarity, because I had no idea what happened. They just roll away pissed with each other.
I did like Avery's childish mindset. Keep in mind she grew up with no other contact with humans except her dad and sister. So her immaturity and naivety were spot on. Sometimes she didn't realize danger when she should have, even though most of the novel she was paranoid of the dangers around where she lived. Her reaction to finally seeing Will and his family was priceless.
The novel needed a good read through to pick up the plentiful typos. Seriously, if the novel was read aloud, wrong words and missing words would have been found. Urthmen was spelled Urtmen and Urthnmen too. Groan.
Reader rated for ages 14+ for mild violence. Heads get smashed in a lot.

Very Great Book!!
This is a MUST READ BOOK! At first I thought "oh no not another dystopia" but this is so much more. it touches on history that could actually become our futures. Avery is a bad ass and her love for her sister June is admirable. She doesnt get too caught up in romance and thats what i love about this book. Its a really great book and i cant wait to read the other parts of the series!!

Enthralling
This is an intense dystopian that takes place in a future primitive earth. The plot is intense and the characters are likeable, but there are always wrenches thrown into the mix. Definitely worth reading. Can't wait to continue. There are some typos.

Good
The story is good but the writer should use more abbreviations the words almost seem mechanical it's just a little bit annoying but the book is good otherwise.
