Out of Order

Rate this book
When a pattern of judicial bribery appears to benefit someone in the mayor’s office, Lindsay St. James, political problem solver, is tasked with fixing the issue. Used to dealing with all kinds of legal ramifications and potential publicity nightmares, Lindsay has never had much trouble resolving these situations in the past. When she enlists the help of a sassy but all too lovely superior court judge, she finds her focus blurred for the first time in her life. Mid-election, it’s the exact wrong time for a fixer to lose sight of the end goal, and the mayor doesn’t help matters by changing political strategy. As Lindsay’s personal life is firing up, her professional life starts crumbling around her. Will this be the first professional problem she’s unable to fix? Or will she need to choose where to point her focus?

NOTE: The first eight chapters of Out of Order were previously published in the anthology, Finally, under the title, Objection. Out of Order is an expanded short, which includes six all new chapters.

Character Crush no 14!

Don't you just love a woman that can seduce the living daylight out of you using only her words? Not like some women who are only cocky and may as well introduce themselves by saying:
Her: "Hi, i'm God's gift to women, and you are?"
Me: "Immigrating to another planet, byeeee!"

Ain't nobody trying to date Johnny Bravo's long lost lady loving sister. But Susanne? Oh Susanne, welcome to my character crush shelf. You'll fit right in with the likes of Vivienne Carriveau, Olivia Collins, Samantha Monteiro, Pari Sadashiv... seriously how did I ever think I was straight?!

Reading this far too short story has made me fall in love with Lynn Galli's writing all over again. I had forgotten how well she builds chemistry between her characters and in this case how snarky and sarcastic they can also be.

Lindsay more than once cracked me up with thoughts like: I closed my eyes, counted to three—that’s as high as I can get without saying “screw it” and vaulting over my desk to choke whoever’s bothering me... ← Me during early morning meetings.

I really wish this was twice as long. I wanted to know more about Lindsay's dumber than a bucket of rocks 'friends' and how her relationship with Susanne would play out after all the commotion surrounding the Mayor's announcement. I wonder if Lynn Galli can be persuaded to write a sequel?

For now this gets a full 4* rating.

This is one of those books wherein I loved the characters but . . . wasn’t as enamored with the story they inhabited. There was a story, and it was readable, just not an exciting thrilling story.

I’m not going to do a whole long wrap-up. It is a short story after all.

Lindsay St. James works for the Mayor of a town as a ‘fixit’ person, the person who tries to manage crises generated by the actions of the mayor (and, I suppose, those around her). She has a friend who is a lawyer and works in the public defender’s office (I think his name is something like Yoshi), another friend who is a traveling marketing dude (Thad; rarely seen), and then the three friends from college who Lindsay has nothing really in common with (she is the token lesbian of the group; the name to know of these three bad friends is ‘Valerie’ – niece of Thad), and who she is attempting to disengage from. Though they are kind of not noticing her disengaging. Until I wrote that part right there about her friends, I hadn’t noticed that her two ‘good’ friends are male, and her horrible and disgusting, and maybe even homophobic friends are female. Probably didn’t notice because one of the main themes of this book is watching Lindsay first become friends with someone, then lovers of that same someone. And that person is female, so she can have good female friends (just, apparently, hadn’t happened until that point in her life).

Judge J. McJudge . . . why the bloody hell is her name not in the book description? Mmphs. Okay, looked the person up. Judge Brooks. Judge is not her first name (even Judge Reinhold’s first name isn’t Judge, its Edward. Edward Ernest ‘Judge’ Reinhold) but her profession (no idea why Judge Reinhold goes by Judge). I know she has a first name because there was a point of when it was used and with whom and . . . etc. But that part wasn’t in the sample and so . . . I’m left with ‘Judge Brooks’. Brooks is 1) female, 2) progressive, 3) lesbian – on a court filled with conservative old men. Naturally that creates some tension.

More tension occurs through the story itself – as in the plot device to . . . um . . . have a story. Someone has been bribing judges, that someone apparently works in the mayor’s office. Judge Brooks is asked to help in rooting out this corruption – which, regardless of success or failure, would not exactly develop a greater love between Judge Brooks and her colleagues.

Right. So. The romance part of the story was much more exciting. Watching the two develop a relationship over a long period of time. Handle some hurdles. Grow together. Fun. And, at least once, graphically exciting.

Well, that’s that. Short story. Short review. There were other people and story threads, but, meh.

Too short to bond with Lyndsay the spin doctor or even remember the name of her love interest the judge in this compact romance. A little sex, a little reluctance by the judge to take a risk on St. James and some corruption in the Mayor's office still made for a satisfying read. I did find myself pondering how much the spin doctors working for the President elect must get paid.
I love the cover for this novella. Wish I had an understanding of how it relates to the story between the covers.

I like Lynn Galli. Her books are always engaging, her characters have plenty of chemistry and she doesn’t shy away from a nice explicit love scene. Out of Order ticks all the boxes and even for its 83 page length, it feels like a complete story. I love Lindsay and Suzanne and their sweet courtship. Enjoyable little read!

f/f explicit

Themes: spin doctoring, working for the mayor, the judge is in, they take it slow.

Loved it. I thought Lindsay was a great MC. Very likable. There might have been a *YES!* moment :) All right, that clears it out. That was my last Galli book that I hadn't read. Done and dusted.

A judge and fixer walk into a room...

No complaints with this short romance.

Lindsay is a fixer for the local Mayor. Suzanne is the new judge in town. They begin a relationship that is challenged with inside corruption and unexpected work changes.

For as short this story is, I was surprised by how much was packed in it. I did not feel like anything was rushed or left out.

I really loved the flirty banter. There was a lot of chemistry as a result of forced tension. Super cute.

I recommend to people who love romance, chemistry, politics, judges, and friends that really never grew up.

A great story!

A fixer with Idiotic friends, a gorgeous cocky judge, a bail out, a bribery, a city hall, a courthouse, a politician who has a diarrhea of the mouth (a quote from the book), great banter, an early atrraction, several dates, a first kiss that just won't come, a sudden change, a life decision to make, and a lot more. All this are the elements for this light and entertaining story. I loved this book and wish it was longer.

3.5 Stars rounded up to 4 STARS
Nice short story with likable main characters. Lindsey is a political fixer - she is currently working for a mayor who makes Lindsey earn her money with her verbal gaffes and bad decisions. Susanne is a newly appointed Judge. The chemistry between the two is hot! I really liked the pace of the romance. My one problem with the book is not Galli's fault. At the moment I'm burnt out on politics & politicians. Especially ones who are incompetent. So I had to take away 0.5 stars but I rounded up.

Just settling into a good Lynn Galli and suddenly it's ended, didn't even know she wrote short stories, especially those with brick wall endings, made worse that over 12% of the kindle was adverts for her other books. So what was short, was suddenly shorter.

This novella is a warm and funny romance between a political fixer and a judge. It's very well written and I really enjoyed it. I am so glad to have discovered Lynn Galli and look forward to reading all of her books.

I enjoyed this updated version of 'Objection', which was originally a short story in Galli's 'Finally'. It expands the original story by adding an additional six chapters, and taking you further into the relationship. As with all of Galli's novels, it's told in first person, though there's no POV switch in this one, so you only get Lindsay's POV and that means Suzanne is not terribly fleshed out.

The additional chapters were interesting enough, but I wish Galli had gone back and fleshed out some of the earlier chapters. As a short within a book it was understandable that you'd have to gloss over details, but when fleshing it out into a novella, I'd have liked more, especially around their dates and getting to know each other. In actuality, the new chapters could have used a bit more substance too.

If you read the original, you'll no doubt enjoy the additions here, and if you haven't read it, then it should make for a nice, quick read.

4.5 Stars. What a delightful but short (boo!) book. Fixer Lindsay and Judge Suzanne have a witty, funny, and totally engaging courtship. And by the time all the teasing stops and the kissing starts,... , well, it’s great for everyone.
If you’re looking for free (KU UK), really funny, witty, and utterly romantic fun, then download this little gem now.

You can see why these two fall for each other. I knocked off 1/2 star because I wanted more story, didn’t get it, and am sulking about it.

A good, short story. Really good.
The two leads are great, and the chemistry is also good. I like the slow build up, and for such a short story, one sex scene is perfect.

Galli is a great writer, I must read more of hers if they are like this.

There were a couple of things that narked, and these are minor but technical issues, but they were there. A couple of times, someplace near the start, there were a couple of Tells, likewise later on. Now, these were really short sections, but Galli is so good they should not have been there. In one scene there were lots of new people and the job function and name were not always tied together in the very beginning. It was often sorted out very fast, but it would have been easier to me, the reader, to have that, and the scene spelt out.

On the whole. Excellent. And I will definitely read more by this author.

Powering through more kindle unlimited lesfic. A morning at the doctor's makes for an incredibly productive day, reading wise.

I do prefer novels to novellas in the genre, but what the heck, it was free and I did enjoy reading it.

Great short story. likeable MC´s, good story plot for such a short story and I got investeted how it all will turn out. It doesn´t get boring or holds the reading flow up with unnecessary story fillers.
Wish it would have been a little bit longer ;)

Too short.

Good story but not enough of it. The reader hardly has time to learn the characters. Make it longer, spice it up a bit and stop rushing. This story could have worked on a longer and more emotionally involved scale

Cute story

Nice but not long enough. The characters were getting interesting and it seemed like a rush to finish... I am sure they have more of a voice and story to tell.

I've missed Lynn

It's been some time since I've read a book by Lynn and boy this was everything. This short packed in every element of a good novel. The meet cute of Lindsay and Suzanne set the tone of their relationship. Finding the one that you can just be yourself around is what we all want and need to find in a partner. A we mustn't forget the heat between these two. Beautifully written and definitely recommended. Think I'll go revisit the Virginia crew now. Happy reading!

Loved It

This book is very well written. Ms. Galli did quite a good job of character development and this nice romance takes some interesting turns.

I enjoy this genre, and I think this is one of my favorites; I will read it again, which is something that I don't ordinarily do.

There is a rather steamy scene, so this is a book only for adults.
