Behind Seth Jackson’s easygoing smile lurks a pain he’s well-rehearsed at ensuring few ever see. The lovable ex-Marine and career firefighter makes a great show out of his zest for life and beautiful women.
But when his anxiety and nightmares become too much to bear, he seeks the professional help he knows he needs.
To his great dismay, his therapist suggests the unimaginable—befriend a woman instead of immediately bedding her.
The challenge would have been far easier had Vivian Deveraux not entered his life. In her eyes he sees traces of the same anguish that haunts him. Yet the chemistry between them stirs up feelings both kept buried for years.
Can the pair help each other heal from the pain of the past? Or will the time they spend together tear open old wounds on their bruised and battered hearts?

I loved Jax he new how to restrain himself, "...I pulled away, but not before leaning into her ear to whisper, “If you kiss me like that again, we have to leave. I can’t keep my hands off of you, Viv.” I really liked this book, it was sweet.
5 star review Controlled Burn in book 3 in the Brotherhood of District 23 series by Amy Briggs but can be read as a standalone novel. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I completely fell in love with the book and the characters. I am definitely going to be reading the first 2 books in the series now! The story is about Seth Jackson, Jax to his friends, who has always been an easy going, loyal and dependable friend to everyone. He is a Marine Corps veteran and a career Firefighter who enjoys the simple life, hanging out with friends and chasing the ladies. Jax is usually the most level-headed of his friends but suddenly he finds himself spinning out of control, unable to sleep, suffering from nightmares and anxiety. Jax finds out that he is suffering from PTSD and he starts to second-guess everything around him as he starts searching for the normalcy he thought that he was living. Vivien Deveraux is a 25 year old with a penchant for selling real estate. She thinks that her next client meeting was just going to be another negotiating deal but whilst brokering a deal for his friends, Vivien meets Jax who stirs up emotions that she had kept buried for years. I loved that the story was written from both of the main characters, Jax and Vivien’s POV especially as they were both dealing with their own personal issues. I think one of the main things I loved about this story was that it was completely focused on their relationship. There were no physical sex scenes between them until near the end of the story and for me this was totally in-keeping with the storyline and it also made it refreshing to read. I love reading about their relationship and what they both had to overcome in their personal lives. The story explores some pretty sensitive issues and I thought that the author did an amazing job when writing about them. The subject of PTSD was treated with respect and it really brought to light how people who suffer from this often do so in silence. Overall I found the story to be beautifully written with some emotional parts that had me fighting back the tears. If you looking for a pure romance story then this book is definitely for you, it has characters that you want to find happiness and a storyline that will break your heart and stitch it back together again. I absolutely loved it and I look forward to reading more from this author.
Controlled Burn is a great story about opening up your heart and loving yourself so that someone else can love you too.
“We do whatever it takes to stay connected, and it’s not always easy. It’s work. But it’s worth it.”
This story was well written, even with a predictable scene between a brother and sister. The characters are fun in spite of the seriousness of their past experiences. Military romances are becoming very popular and Amy Briggs does a great job telling Seth and Vivian's story. Controlled Burn is the third book in the series but can be read as a standalone. Seth is a retired soldier and currently working as a firefighter. He is a true hero. He is trying to overcome the darkness that threatens to drag him under. He can’t figure out why this darkness is within him, but when he meets Vivian that darkness is replaced with light. Her light is like a love at first sight kind of thing but Seth doesn’t recognize it. Vivian is a young successful real estate agent who has built up a pile of guilt over the death of her brother. When she confesses her demons to Seth it seems to make Seth’s darkness even darker. But hopefully a little communication could fix them and their relationship with each other. Their reward would be a very sweet romance. We are given just enough of the supporting characters, Jo, Brian, Matt and Jessica, to want more and knowing that this is book three has me wondering who the first two books are about. I am one clicking those books quickly. Amy Briggs is a new to me author that I am glad I took a chance on. You won’t be sorry either.
Extremely wordy...lots of unnecessary details for a book where they only go on 2 dates and then are in love. Repetitive cursing that got annoying but the overall story was good.
I truely enjoyed this book! It is book three in the Controlled Burn series. I read it as a standalone, but I put book one and two on my TBR list. Seth "Jax" Jackson is a hot, tattooed firefighter from Florida. He works alongside his "brothers" at the fire station whom he has known almost his whole life. Right out of High School, he decided to join the Marine Corps. He did two tours overseas and realized how much he missed his family and lifelong friends. He got out of the military and joined his brothers as a firefighter, which is what he wanted to do his whole life. His family had been in the volunteer fire department and it was his lifelong dream. Jax came back from deployment and he had changed. He was no longer the strong self assured man he was before. He started suffering from insomnia and nightmares. He decided to see a therapist at the VA to help him. The doctor had many rules for him to follow. He was no longer allowed to drink in excess and have one night stands. Jax was told that he needed to make a meaningful connection with women, instead of looking himself with one for the night. He is a very sensitive and caring person to those who he considered family. It was a step he didn't know if he could take because he didn't want to pull someone else down into his darkness by falling in love. It wasn't until he went to meet a gorgeous, blonde realtor that was helping his two best friends buy a commercial gym that he thought he could relate to a woman without sex. When Jax met Vivian Deveraux, he fell head over heels! He could see himself taking that leap and dating her. The two went on a couple dates and were smitten with each other. Viv brought up the fact that her brother had been a marine and PTSD got the best of him. This brought up some demands in Jax that he wasn't ready to share with her and he ran. Jax was dealing with his own PTSD and didn't even share it with his family or brothers. They had no clue what he was dealing with because he was the first one there for them with a smile, helping hand, or just to listen. I loved reading about the inner war and changes Jax was making as he began the relationship with Viv. This book switched POV between Jax and Vivian. I really liked learning what was going through both of their heads as the story progresses. It is my favorite type of book to read. This is a must read for anyone who loves a hot Alpha Male who is sensitive at the same time.
4 Star Review Controlled Burn is the fantastic and scorching third book in the Brotherhood of District 23 Series by Amy Briggs. Although it’s part of a series, it can be read as a standalone novel with a happy ending. It’s told in alternating point of view by the two main characters, Vivian and Seth, but every character in the story is well developed.
Vivian Deverauxis, a young thriving real estate agent, has it all together on the outside; but internally, she is dealing with her past. Not wanting to discuss it with anyone, she throws herself into her real estate career.
“I want to be a man who knows how to deal with demons and keeps them at bay. I want to be a man who deserves to be loved, a man who’s capable of loving.”
Ex-Marine and firefighter, Seth Jackson, is suffering from PTSD. He doesn’t do relationships because he feels unable to fully give himself to anyone. While with friends, he meets the petite and conservative Vivian and for the first time, it has him wishing he was capable of giving his heart to someone.
“She deserved light in her life. She was like sunshine, burning brightly with that beautiful smile and sparkling eyes, and I was the dark storm cloud ruining a perfect day…and I would ruin her.”
Determined to break through from his past, he pursues her in the one way he knows she can’t deny him…by needing to discuss property with her. He requests that she go to dinner with him to discuss the potential locations over food and drinks. But, is how sly is he really being with that move?
“I went ahead and asked the question of the day, “This isn’t really about business, is it?”
She’s a tiny blonde ball of sass focused on work. He’s a sexy, determined man dripping with Southern charm. Both have a past that haunts and consumes them. Are they able to work together in order to move forward with the present?
Briggs does such an amazing job of building up the desire between the characters that I thought the pages were going to singe off at some point from the sparks that were flying. If you’re looking for a sweet and sexy romance with an incredible passionate build up, then I highly recommend Controlled Burn. I’ll definitely be reading more in this series.
Controlled Burn (The Brotherhood of District 23) By: Amy Briggs 5 out of 5 stars
The story Controlled Burn (The Brotherhood of District 23) by Amy Biggs is a military romance book. Seth Jackson, or Jax to his friends and family, has always been the easy-going, loyal, and dependable friend. He was in the Marine Corps and now is a career firefighter. He does enjoy chasing the ladies. Now he finds himself spinning out of control, not able to sleep and suffering from nightmares and anxiety. He is diagnosed with PTSD and starts to second-guess everything around him.
Vivan Deveraux is wonderful at selling real estate. When she shows up to meet with a client she thought that she was just negotiating another deal. Then when her clients show up she meets Jax. He stirs up emotions that she has kept buried for years. Now Jax is pursuing Vivian. Will this connection work or create more darkness?
I really enjoyed reading this book. It is a wonderful romantic story. Both Vivian and Jax are amazing characters. Jax has served his country and continues to help people by working as a firefighter. He is caught off guard when he is diagnosed with PTSD. He is trying to work through his emotions and the physical symptoms. Vivian is an awesome real estate agent. Although she is young, she can sell just like a seasoned agent. She is a career minded person. Her life was shattered by a tragedy and she believes that she has made peace with herself. Both Vivian and Jax have friends that they can count on for advice and they are honest with them. This story can get very emotional when Jax is explaining to Vivian about himself and the same is true when Vivian tells Jax about what has happened in her past. The sensitive subject of PTSD is treated with respect in this story. You are given a glimpse into the mind of someone that is suffering and how they feel about themselves. I highly recommend this story to anyone who loves a good romance with characters that are searching for someone to love and find themselves as well. There is adult situations and language which would make this a book for a mature reader.
Book Review: Controlled Burn Book 3 A Brotherhood of District 23 Novel Author Amy Briggs FIVE STARS Amy Briggs has written a wonderful story. I read this from cover to cover and didn't put it down. A little known statistic, there are 22 veterans daily that kill themselves because of PTSD. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Seth Jackson or Jax, as his friends call him, is a Marine Corp veteran who is now a career firefighter. Jax has recently started having anxiety attacks and nightmares, and he is suffering from insomnia. He is seeing a counselor who is trying to help him cope better with his anxiety and try to help him socialize more normally with woman as opposed to the way things have been going with him. Vivian Deveroux is a 25 year old real estate agent who is the youngest in her field and doing a heck of a job at it. During a meeting with 2 clients she met Jax who is a friend with the couple. Vivian has her own demons that she fights daily concerning her brother who killed himself after he returned home from Afganistan. Viv is instantly attracted to Jax but he confuses her at times. Following a misunderstanding, Viv flys off to visit her parents and Grandmother for two days while Jax tries to understand what he can do to try to make up with Viv for his behavior. Will they be able to work it out? Can they get past the issues he has with PTSD in order to make things work between them? The thing that struck me most about this book is that I had a relationship fail due to him having issues with PTSD that he couldnt control. Unbeknownst to me he had stopped his counseling sessions and had been having nightmares and flash backs again. This book really helped me understand what I could and should have done to help him. Yet I allowed him to push me away and break things off. It has been almost 3 years for me since we split up and there is not a day that goes by that I don't miss him and think about him. I do know that he had restarted counseling and now he is with a new woman who must do for him what I was unable to do for him. Kelli Harper
Amy Briggs' Controlled Burn was a story that was fast paced and hooked you from page one. This book follows Seth Jackson, or Jax to his friends, and Vivian Deveroux. Told in dual PoV we see the story unfold of instant attraction, heartache, and a respectful covering of PTSD. Jax is a love them and leave them type of man, but when his therapist at the VA suggests he grow up and take someone on a date and no sex until he feels its the right time he has only one person in mind. Helping his friends look at real estate, he is instantly attracted to Vivian, the highly sought after real estate agent. Asking her on a working dinner, but slowly telling her its just a date and no work, he comes to learn more about her and how much he never really gets to know any of the women he's ever taken anywhere. Can he open up to her about his PTSD, or will he live in the dark forever? Vivian Deveroux is a highly successful real estate agent, even at her her young age. When she meets Seth, she's instantly attracted and that's not a common thing for her. When she accepts his date, she's excited and hopeful. Seth was the perfect gentlemen with just enough teasing to want more. When Vivian opens up about her brother, Seth panics and leaves, leaving Vivian confused and hurt. A last minute visit to her parents brings on news that breaks her heart. Can Vivian move past the hurt or was it just a misunderstanding? Can she help Seth and be his light in the dark? I really enjoyed this book and now I'll need to go back and read the first two books in this series to learn about the others talked about in this book. This can be read as a standalone.
Controlled burn by Amy Briggs was charming, flirty, an enchanting. It is book 3 of a Brotherhood of District 23. There are a few tropics that can be triggers with suicide and PTSD but both spoken in a way that lets you cope and understand with the characters.
Seth “Jax” Jackson is a Marine who now fills his days with the fire department back home. This hot, literally, sexy fireman with a southern drawl has some darkness in his past that contributes to his present. He has some anxiety and possible PTSD and is seeing a shrink, but don't tell people. He thinks he's a cold hearted non dater who thinks no one should put up with his baggage. Until...
Vivian Deveraux. The young, sexy, cute and adorable real estate agent helping his best friends. Viv hasn't exactly been into he dating game since her brothers death. But there is just something about Seth that has her drawn to him. “I'd have called him anything he wanted if he was going to keep calling me darlin’” I mean, who can't relate to that?!
Controlled Burn is a back and forth love story between Jax and Vivian that takes place over about a week. You get to read from both perspectives and it's impossible not to love Vivian's bubbly personality or Jax’s attempt at being a gentleman. Their feelings arise quickly and was something neither expected. But after a misunderstanding between the two it almost doesn't work out, don't worry, it thankfully does.
I was so excited to Seth's story. Amy told his and Vivian's story so beautifully you felt like you were living it with them. I'm so impressed with the way PTSD was brought to light in this book. Being married to a Marine has given me first-hand knowledge of how bad it can be. Thank you Amy for making others aware. I encourage everyone to read this book. It will leave you in tears with a smile on your face. Well done!!!
While I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books in this series....this one, this one broke me. (In a good way)
We met Seth "Jax" Jackson in the previous books. Best friend to Matt and Brian, the heroes of the other books...he is their life long friend and retired Marine. (You never call someone an "Ex" Marine, once a Marine always a Marine...my Uncle would be so proud to know I remember that little tidbit) He's recently discovered he needs help, possible PTSD creeping up on him. His therapist, whom I decided I like his style, who show him empathy instead of pity gets him to see what's going on and how he can take steps to get rid of the doubts, the darkness, and see his way to the man he wants to be.
Vivian Deveraux, she's young, beautiful and on her way to becoming the county's top real estate agent. Her secrets deal with her brothers suicide after returning from Afghanistan and how she feels guilty that she let him down, didn't see the signs, didn't do enough for him...all the classic survivor's guilt going on.
Now while I love hot and heavy scenes this books is more about making an emotional connection. To good old fashion courtship and with strong characters that you become invested in, in all honesty I appreciated the love story more.
I also want to thank Amy for bringing to light the statistics of how many veterans commit suicide and what we can do for them. Now the veterans in my life lived long with their demons but it wasn't easy and as a family we had to learn what we needed to do to be supportive without smothering and making it worse. This is what Vivian learns and allows her to be able to start healing over her brother's death.
If you are a soft touch like I am, have the tissues handy, there are a couple of ugly cry moments plus maybe a couple of joyful ones when things work out.
I look forward to reading more of Amy's work but think this one is going to hold a special place in my heart for personal reasons.
Controlled Burn by Amy Briggs is a hot fast read. It is book three in a series called Brotherhood of District 23 and quite frankly reading this one has made me curious about the ones before. I love how the author wove in important information about PTSD and Veterans.
Seth and Vivian meet via friends and Seth is smitten from the beginning. Vivian also notices him, but doesn’t think he sees her. Both main characters have a strong sense of their careers and both are suffering from sorrow. Vivian over her brother’s suicide and Seth over his PTSD. Sometimes, it is too much, but will they be able to come to terms and make it? On top of that Vivian’s best friend stirs the pot a wee bit.
Controlled Burn is a fun, fast, hot read.I enjoyed that fact that once again that firefighters were the careers of the men in the book. Let’s face it most firefighters work hard every day and many are quite HOT.
Not only is this book about firefighters, but it's also what soldier to through when the come back home. It's great story that tells what happens when you serve you country and shows how our hero's go the in life being a firefighter.it's a lot of stress and anxiety.great job to the author for this great story.
I have to say that this is my favourite book of the series. This book broke my heart a little but the author put it back together slowly as I watched the relationship develop between Jax And Viv. The light in his darkness. What a beautiful read.
Two broken souls coming together to heal each other. Jax and Viv have amazing chemistry. I loved watching the relationship grow through out the book. And is one of my favorite firefighter in this series. Knowing his background you just want that happy ending for him. Amy did an amazing job and I can't wait for more.
Probably the best one yet! Kinda bummed that we never really learn how Brian proposes to Jo though. I loved how Seth actually took his time getting to know Viv.
Book 3: Controlled Burn A Brotherhood of District 23 Novel By Amy Briggs
5 STARS This is an amazing novel written by Amy Briggs. This is the first time I’ve had the pleasure of reading from this Author and she has truly captivated me. Every great novel has a good plot and this story has a perfect plot. Vivian Deveraux and Seth Jackson are two strong characters and Briggs has done a great job describing each character’s strength and weaknesses as well as their feelings throughout the novel.
This is the third installment in the “A Brotherhood of District 23” but you are not required to read the series in order. Each book has its own story and they can be read as a standalone. This series begins with “Book 1: Fired Up” the story of Jo Meadows and Brian Cavanaugh then followed by “Book 2: Fully Involved” which is the story of Isabel Cruise and Matt Cavanaugh. After reading this amazing book, I’ve decided that I need to read Book 1 next.
As always, I will try not to give too many details because I don’t want to spoil the book for you.
Vivian Deveraux is a killer negotiator at her young age. She has been in the real estate business for five years and for someone so young, she is one of the top realtors in Central Florida, she’s smart, tough and sexy. But after her family suffered a tragic lose, she closed herself off from a lot of things, everything except her job and her parents.
Seth “Jax” Jackson is a 34 year old who has a darkness in him, but where does that darkness come from? “Jax” retired from the Marines after two long deployments and is now a Lieutenant at the firehouse. Deployment can change a person, no matter what you see or do while you are deployed.
Will Vivian and Seth decide to open up and give each other the chance to love again? Or will they allow their darkness to win? I highly recommend you read this amazing novel in order to find out
I loved the story between these two characters; Jax is a Marines Corps Vet who now is enjoying a career within the Fire Service. He has always been the down to earth kind of character, with his easy going nature which makes him popular with people.
Until over the past few months he has started having panic attacks and he is afraid to fall asleep as he has horrendous nightmares which have made him into an insomniac. His counsellor is trying to help him cope with the anxiety and suggests socialising to help him overcome the panic attacks. Jax thinks on this and agrees to help his friends with buying their real estate and when they ask Jax to join them for a meeting he is un-prepared for the feels raised when the agent walks into the room and how this meeting will turn his world upside down.
Vivian has had her own demons in her life, her younger brother commit suicide after he got back from tour of Afghanistan and this haunts her every day. She has a career within the real estate industry and she is good at her job, when she is about to meet her clients a third person catches her eye. Vivian meets Jax and instantly is drawn to him but can she get past the nightmares of her past to love him.
This story shows the struggle of ex-military trying to live normal lives but is hit with the hidden disease of PTSD and how this affects the people around them. I loved the both POV story and although this is book 3, I felt that it could be read as a stand-alone book quite easily. I enjoyed this story and will be downloading the previous books to read shortly.
Controlled Burn Book 3 A Brotherhood of District 23 by Amy Briggs Rated 4 stars
This book started out very interesting then as time went by it just seemed to not go anywhere. I kinda thought some excitement would happen with Vivian with her real estate showings or even with Seth and the fire truck. But nothing. This is a slow, sweet romance with heavy emphasis on Marines with ptsd. I almost felt like I was being preached to although I did enjoy his sessions with his therapist. Don't get me wrong there were cute moments in it and the supporting characters were interesting and sometimes funny. But it just kinda left me blah. Since this is the third book there are characters from the first two who make appearances which is nice. I have not read the first two and did not feel like I was missing anything other than their stories of course. I did still rate it 4 stars since it was a solid interesting story Seth Jackson is a firefighter and former Marine. He has friends and family he is close to. He is extremely good looking and has a killer smile that the ladies love. Suddenly he starts having nightmares and trouble sleeping. Once he mentioned it to his doctor at the VA he had to start seeing a therapist. Turns out it is a good thing for Seth to do. But things get even better when we meets Vivian. Vivian is a young real estate agent who has done very well for herself in a short period of time. Since she has been busy building up her business her personal life has been very static. Once she meets Seth she feels things she hasn't felt before and is amazed he is such a gentleman on their date, since he seems like a ladies man. He does things that are so thoughtful that she can't resist seeing him again.... the next day. She does have a dark shadow on her past that she is not sure she should share with him. Little does she know he has a few dark shadows of his own. Can they each share their darkness and end up in the light?
Controlled Burn is the third installment of the Brotherhood of District 23 series and can be read as a stand alone. Reading the others is highly recommended because the feature character Jax is included in the others, plus you get some more sexy men of District 23. This book centers on Seth "Jax" Jackson a former Marine and Lieutenant for House 23. Having served his time in the Marines he decided that it was time to come home and rejoin his fire brothers and sisters. He purchased his own home but felt it was to much house for him alone so he decided to live with Matt Cavanaugh a fellow Lieutenant on the fire department. With Matt and the dectective getting serious a gray cloud seems to start following Jax around. Afraid of being alone with his thoughts and feelings he began to seek out someone to share his everything with. Vivian Deveraux is a young and successful driven woman, who has her very own real estate company. She has prided herself on her very professional sophisticated approach to her business. But even with all the positives, her emotions tend to overwhelm her and it has caused her to pretty much shut down any relationships other than family. Vivian was having the hardest time dealing with the death of her brother because it was just so unexpected. When these two cross paths at a once and a life time sale for Vivian, Jax takes a chance on finding the one to share it with, but they will have to battle the ever looming darkness. This a book you simply can't just put down, I read it one sitting. I love the whole idea behind the story bring to light the internal struggles everyone faces. I highly recommend this book! "Vivian Deveraux, you're special in ways I cannot describe, and in such a short period of time, you bring me light. Don't ever let me dim that light in you."-Jax
Vivian Deveraux is a beautiful, and highly successful woman. She's been in a dark place for a while now, after a family tragedy. While she's involved in a big real estate deal, she meets Jax, who she feels an instant strong attraction for. However, he also stirs up the emotions that she's kept buried for years. Seth 'Jax' Jackson is an easy going, loyal, and super hot Veteran/YUMMY fireman, who is going through a dark period. He's recently found out that he's suffering from some PTSD, which has made it impossible for him to sleep peacefully with all of the nightmares, and anxiety. Plus, it's bringing out feelings of not feeling good enough for anyone. The day he meets Vivian, he instantly knows she's different from all of his random hook ups, and he sets out to get to know her. But when their connection stirs up more darkness, will he run from his shot at happiness?!
This is the first book that I've read by this author, and all I can think is, WHERE HAVE I BEEN?! I have been missing out on this amazing ongoing series! The character development is great, with a very entertaining cast of secondaries that are awesome! Vivian is an amazing woman, and her witty banter had me laughing hard, especially with her bestie. Not to mention, I'm down with her shoe, and purse issues! Jax was a mouthwatering tortured soul that I couldn't get enough, and together, their flammable chemistry was palpable, finally EXPLODING into SIZZLIN' sexy scene goodness that I was ready to beg for more of. Amy Brigg's talented writing style had me attention from the very first page, and kept it long after I finished the last page. These two people have etched themselves on my heart, and I want so much more! I'm so very excited to have the privilege of discovering a new to me, fantastic author! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Controlled Burn by Amy Briggs is a book in the Brotherhood of District 23 series. This is the third book in the series and can be read as a standalone. I have never read any books in this series, and after reading Jaxs story, I know that I will reading more. Being married to a veteran who suffers from PTSD, I found this true to not just the life that I lead but also to the life my husband does after his years in service. This book is a very good insight to what our veterans suffer from and searching for a “normal life” again. Seth “Jax” Jackson, a marine veteran and career fire fighter loves his simple life of doing what he loves, hanging out with his friends, and chasing the girls He has always been so in control and very level headed suddenly finds himself spinning so out of control with his nightmares, PTSD and anxiety. Struggling with so much, he simply wants to have the normal life he had. Enter in Vivian Deveraux, a real estate agent who is dealing with the loss of her brother. While working on a deal with Jaxs friend, they meet and right away there are emotions that she has hidden for years. The chemistry they have, will leave you wanting more and more of Jaxs and Vivien.
Have never read anything by this author, I was drawn into her amazing writing style about PTSD and an amazing love story that I found unable to put down. These characters and the amazing secondary characters really helped make this book what it is. The witty banter of Vivien, the tortured soul of Jax truly make this a couple to get lost in and wish I could read so much more about them. I give this book 5 amazing stars and will be reading more of this series. I love series but I also love the fact that they can be read as standalones. I will give a warning, that this book might be a trigger to some people.
In this third installment of the Brotherhood of District 23, Amy Briggs focuses on Seth “Jax” Jackson and his love interest Vivian Deveraux. From the moment Jax first sets eyes on Vivian at a business luncheon, he was smitten, she was everything he could possible want in a woman. She is so put together, that he just wants to unwrap her. Vivian, while trying to conduct a business meeting with Max and Isabella, can’t help but notice their friend Seth staring at her. You see she also noticed this handsome firefighter, but is trying to keep her composure since she is conducting business. After the meeting with Vivian, Max quickly tells Jax she is off limits until after the deal. Jax, while does agree at first, consults another on the matter of how to proceed with making a real connection with Miss Deveraux. You see Jax has demons that have been plaguing him since his return from service, but he isn’t the only one who is fighting their own personal darkness. Vivian has been struggling with her own demons since her brother committed suicide after his own return from Iraq. This two must find a way to be able to make a real connection, because they are burning up for each other. Can they commit to talking about their demons or will they continue to dance around each other and lose the chance to find that true love?
The third book in the Brotherhood of District 23 series, Controlled Burn – written by Amy Briggs, is a story touching on PTSD and its symptoms, as well as, darkness versus light.
This is Seth Jackson’s story, otherwise known as Jax to those around him. He comes off as that adorable friend that is loyal and dependable… maybe even a ladies’ man. He’s also a veteran after serving in the Marines and is now back to being a career firefighter. However, his life is not all it appears to be and he’s barely holding on between lack of sleep, nightmares and anxiety which are all a result of PTSD. His goal to find some level of normalcy in his life.
Vivian Deveroux has goals and she lives her life to meet those; only twenty-five years old and she’s a successful real estate broker. Her latest deal involves a couple who are purchasing a commercial property and Vivian is playing the middle man between the buyers and sellers. This is what she loves and she takes pride in her job. In the midst of this latest sale, she meets Jax, and there are instant sparks though each isn’t quite sure what the other is thinking.
I liked this story. It was well written and encompassed characters from the previous two books. This story takes on some difficult topics and the author handles those well. Jax’s experience with PTSD comes off not as significant as some more of the more drastic cases that we’ve all unfortunately heard about. I think there could have been a bit more written in this area to his coping and/or helping other in that area. Despite this, the author did a good job of weaving this in with the other aspects of the story and it was done well. I enjoyed the obvious chemistry that was shared between Jax and Vivian. Overall, a good read with a solid story line.

She blames herself because she did not see the signs, that if she had known she could have saved him. When Vivian and Jax meet sparks fly. Jax knows she is different from all his grandson hookups and wants to get to know her. But with their connection, brings more darkness. Will Jax stay and fight or run from his shot at a happily ever after. I was beginning king to loose the faith I had that I could ever be well. That I could become the man someone like Vivian deserved. Vivian deserved light in her life. There was something that drew me to him, to his heart like he needed me as much as I needed him. Wonderful book loved it.
