For a Marine like Zack Decker, "No One Left Behind" isn't just a promise, it's a sacred oath.Every Marine has a story about someone he couldn’t save, a face that would haunt him forever. When Command Sergeant Hal Tarra, one of Decker’s oldest friends, vanishes on the Commonwealth frontier shortly after taking early retirement from the Corps, Zack knows what memories are driving the former Pathfinder, because he sees the same face in his worst nightmares. Naval intelligence isn’t interested in resurrecting ancient history, especially the tale of a failed rescue after it had been consigned to the memory hole. So Decker does the only thing he can, out of friendship and loyalty, and the hope that he might finally redeem the one they’d thought lost long he orders himself on an unsanctioned mission, beyond Fleet support, risking everything for a friend. His intelligence colleagues never could understand the Marine credo “No One Left Behind” but as he keeps reminding them, he's still one of the Few…
Eric Thomson is my pen name. I'm a former Canadian soldier who spent more years in uniform than he expected, serving in both the Regular Army (Infantry) and the Army Reserve (Armoured Corps). I spent several years as an Information Technology executive for the Canadian government before leaving the bowels of the demented bureaucracy to become a full-time author.
I've been a voracious reader of science-fiction, military fiction and history all my life, assiduously devouring the recommended Army reading list in my younger days and still occasionally returning to the classics for inspiration. Several years ago, I put my fingers to the keyboard and started writing my own military sci-fi, with a definite space opera slant, using many of my own experiences as a soldier as an inspiration for my stories and characters. When I'm not writing fiction, I indulge in my other passions: photography, hiking and scuba diving, all of which I've shared with my wife, who likes to call herself my #1 fan, for more than thirty years.
The books on Decker's War are always good reading but this one had more than the usual intrigue and action all the way to the end of the last chapter. I highly recommend this book.
Just finished four looking forward to 5,6,7, Enjoyed the characters immensely The story is fast paced violent for sure a fast read And a great wise cracking marine. Hot partner to boot
Twisty enough, especially for a sci-fi yarn. I have enjoyed books 1 through 4, will start on 5 momentarily. I almost never do reviews, this one was fun.
Low Brow, Low Budget, Corny Space Marine James Bond Wannabe
"Howling Stars, Decker's War Book 4," continues the low brow, simplistic, SciFi story of a future Space Marine, who comes across as a low budget, coarse, James Bond wannabe.
The storyline, set in the far future, has Major Jake Decker, Pathfinder Marine, attached to Fleet Intelligence, answering a call from a former Pathfinder comrade-in-arms, to help in completing a failed rescue mission from their past. A furlough is taken (plausible deniability for Fleet Intel), minuscule clues followed, and off into the beyond, far from Commonwealth space.
The action, plot, and narratives are boring, plodding, corny, and hackneyed. The protagonist is a self-absorbed, self-righteous warrior, who changes and morphs Rules of Engagement (ROE), to suit his personal wants. He repeatedly, sanctimoniously pontificates against being a cold-bloodied killer, allowing enemy combatants to go unmolested. He then kills an empath who "fingered" his mind. Yet again, once his buddy is killed by the same enemy group, has no issue with destroying an entire space freighter, killing all aboard. As the story is constructed by the author, this is an espionage war between a flawed Republican Democracy-the Commonwealth, and against multiple entities, internal and external, intent on destroying it. The Canadian author is another of the socialist-left, who cannot differentiate between criminal actions, requiring law enforcement response, and asymmetrical warfare, requiring a totally different level of response. War is war.
