"A Chick Grows Up" is an informational text about the gestation of an egg as it grows, hatches, and grows into a rooster or a hen. I like this book for beginning readers because it has full color pictures of the inside of an egg which is engaging to early readers. I loved hearing my students sound out the words "embryo," "wattle" and "comb." They were interested in the content enough to persevere even though the words were difficult. This book has great graphic organizers built in to further explain the text and introduces readers to an index and a "word hunt."
Title: A Chick Grows Up Author: Pam Zollman Published: 2005 Age Appropriateness: Pre-K-1st Summary: This book walks through the life cycle of a chicken through pictures and text. Review: I liked this book. It was a simple read, and had lots of great pictures to keep little readers engaged. I would use this when I hatch chicks in my classroom :)
Quarantine reading. Regardless of age this is a great book for teaching kids about life cycles. My toddler may not have grasped every new term or every detail but she definitely understood the basic info.
This book would be great to use for lower grade levels. I think this book would be useful to have in the classroom in a science area. I would use this book in my classroom when teaching my students about animals life cycles. This would be a good book to make a craft showing the different life cycles a chicken goes through before it becomes a chicken. I thought this was a good book for a 1st grade level classroom.
