Munshi Premchand (Hindi: मुंशी प्रेमचंद) was an Indian writer famous for his modern Hindustani literature. He is one of the most celebrated writers of the Indian subcontinent, and is regarded as one of the foremost Hindustani writers of the early twentieth century.
Born Dhanpat Rai, he began writing under the pen name "Nawab Rai", but subsequently switched to "Premchand", while he is also known as "Munshi Premchand", Munshi being an honorary prefix. A novel writer, story writer and dramatist, he has been referred to as the "Upanyas Samrat" ("Emperor among Novelists") by some Hindi writers. His works include more than a dozen novels, around 250 short stories, several essays and translations of a number of foreign literary works into Hindi.
Premchand is considered the first Hindi author whose writings prominently featured realism. His novels describe the problems of the poor and the urban middle-class. His works depict a rationalistic outlook, which views religious values as something that allows the powerful hypocrites to exploit the weak. He used literature for the purpose of arousing public awareness about national and social issues and often wrote about topics related to corruption, child widowhood, prostitution, feudal system, poverty, colonialism and on the India's freedom movement.
Several of his early works, such as A Little Trick and A Moral Victory, satirised the Indians who cooperated with the British colonial government.
In the 1920s, he was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi's non-cooperation movement and the accompanying struggle for social reform. During this period, his works dealt with the social issues such as poverty, zamindari exploitation (Premashram, 1922), dowry system (Nirmala, 1925), educational reform and political oppression (Karmabhumi, 1931).
In his last days, he focused on village life as a stage for complex drama, as seen in his most famous work Godan as well as the short-story collection Kafan (1936).Premchand believed that social realism was the way for Hindi literature, as opposed to the "feminine quality", tenderness and emotion of the contemporary Bengali literature.
I really doubt when I read this that is it really a content from my most fav. Writer? Though I liked his writing style but this work isn't seems to be from him. Still I would like to see it from the perspective of a satire. Critic on dry blooded bodies. But Munshi Ji can't make such a mistake which highlighted so easily as layed over. Calling them Begum which is a Mughal call form for wives and in another stanza reminding them of 'Jauhar' which was the glorified act done by 'Rajputani Ladies' to save their pride and self-respect against the brutal Muslim invaders who wanted to spoil the very virtue of a women in the name of religious conversions. And then, again calling them the lineage of Taimur (even when the 'Jauhar Pratha' was started around 200 years before his birth time). This can't be Munshi Ji, for sure. Someone has did it in his name like things are happening in this era of social media where people reproducing the content from someone unknown or even famous ones and flagged it under their names. Same was done by SRK from 'The Alchemist' by Paulo Coelho Sir in one of his random movie.
I had this book in my Hindi Textbook in eighth grade. Till that time I had no interest in Hindi short stories, but Premchand really does know a way of making people read his stories.
Because this was in my textbook, I had no option but to read it(because if I didn't, I might've failed my exam). However, I really loved reading it, and I didn't read it for studying, but also to find out some of the finest literary works done in Hindi.
This is a Hindi short story written by Munshi Premchand. It starts with the king's most loved diwan retiring from his post. Because of this, the king gives his retired diwan a job to find a new diwan for the kingdom. To accomplish this task, the retired diwan keeps a test for all the contestants to see who is the worthiest to apply for his post.
Even though it is a short story, it is philosophical. It shows that only the person who cares about others more than himself/herself can achieve anything in the world.
An excellent piece written my munshi ji to subtly deliver the message of araise and awake which was time and again given by great personalities of India, of which swamiji is always remembered, makes you think on many fronts if you are ready to see what the authour wants to show, otherwise its just another attempt of munshi ji to instill some nationalistic feelings in the hearts of India, a very good read of about 30-45 minutes
Discipline doesn't mean punctuality or just manners. It's more than that.
Discipline is the only thing that makes you unique than the rest. Discipline requires lots of self control in a world of luxury, lust & lusture.
This is one such story of where Emperor takes examination of dignity of women. Rightly said, If a woman can't protect their dignity their own & falls for the limelight of glorification, doomed are the society in which they belong to.
The invasion of Nadir Shah and the decline of the Mughal Empire is depicted. The message is that if people become addicted to "bhog vilas, vyasan" and they forget to defend their empires then the empire declines.
This short story is describing Nadir Shah invasion of Delhi, who took a test of a line of queens. Premchand's articulate writing and crisp speech is efficient in expressing the scenario of over 200 years old instance eloquently. It's a must read.
I read this book for Indian Literature Readathon. This short story is describing Nadir Shah invasion of Delhi, who took a test of a line of queens. Premchand's articulate writing and crisp speech are efficient in expressing the scenario of over 200 years old instance eloquently. It's a must-read.
Zabardast story and concept. A very different thought process of Premchand in that era and a true one. Delhi had lost its fighting spirit when Nadir Shah invaded and being a casual reader, I loved it.
A very short with a very impactful message 👍 •∆• Perfect book to find out what an Indian writer can write in just a few pages •∆• 10 min story •∆• IT'S NOT ABOUT "EXAMS" •∆• Hindi Literature Classic •∆• Gives an important message about life & morals
A story depicting the status of women during the late 1800s, when India was rule by various emperors. Very rarely short stories make such a statement which this book has. I wonder if Shri Premachand would have been alive in this era, what kind of impact his writings would have on society ?
