Dorchester Publishing‘s imprint, Lovespell, had a category called Timeswept Romance in the 1990s, that featured heroines who were transported back in time (the means/methods varied). I’ve read a number of these books over the years. Elizabeth Crane’s Relections in Time followed the familiar romance conventions and made use of troupes not usually tackled in this genre.

Retna O’Neal experiences cold feet regarding the prospects of marriage to her boring fiance. She has become obsessed with the lives of The Blues in a local cemetery. The obsession leads to insomnia she attempts to manage by hypnosis. During this process, she enters the body of Callie Blue, wife of Nathan Blue.

The slipping into/out Callie’s consciousness as Renta goes through hypnosis was an interesting approach to time travel. What surprised me the most, though, was how well the story tackled the consequences of rape and made it valid to the plot’s progression. Most romantic novels settle for the fantasy rather than provide commentary on the exploitation of women (especially children). The romance is there, though.

This was an interesting one. 1990s Renata has a pretty stressful life and is unfulfilled and can't sleep, so she visits a hypnotherapist and ends up in the body of a woman from the 1880s. The woman whose body she inhabits has had a hard life. Callie is a fairly newly married woman who has multiple miscarriages and a terrible secret. Renata falls in love with Callie's husband at first sight, and does her best to fit into her new circumstances.

This book explores gender roles in the 1880s, rape and marital rape, and reincarnation. It was quite a lot to think about, but presented in a pretty light and readable fashion.

Side note - why were we all obsessed with time travel in in the early 1990s? It seems to be such a common theme in books from that era, but it isn't so commonly written about now.

Renata O'Neal is an accountant engaged to a man she doesn't love. Her life is stagnant and she feels there should be more. Her fiancee is pushing towards marriage and buying a home. He also puts his mother's wishes before Renata's and that causes problems.

Renata starts to see hallucinations and visits a doctor who hypnotises her. It takes her on a journey to the late 1800's where she takes over Callie Blue's life. A time-travel romance with a little more bite, REFLECTIONS IN TIME deals with rape and how it affects women during that era.

Elizabeth Crane's romance has some problems but, because the plot is somewhat different, it kept me intrigued. If you enjoy romances that contain a unconventional element look for this story. Don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed.

I liked this time travel romance. Halfway in I wanted to peek at the ending but refrained and enjoyed it all the more. Renata had trouble sleeping so was hypnotized and found herself in the 1880's married to Nathan. It dealt with some serious issues and Nathan was such a lovable hero.
