I really enjoyed these stories. I think most of us understand when you read something at the A1 level you are not getting great literature. It is difficult to write a story using only the present tense and to make it interesting, but I did find this interesting. Some things to consider:
The five book bundle is, in reality, five short stories. It is listed at 400 pages in the Kindle version (recommended) but these are very short pages. The chapters are very short, only a few sentences. They could have easily been combined to create fewer chapters. The A1 level is difficult for total beginners but if you have been studying Spanish for a while you are ready of these stories. No vocabulary words are included so you will need the online dictionary.
I've read the first 2 novels so far. the vocabulary and sentences are at the right level reading on kindle with built in dictionary is a great way to improve vocabulary. I just wish the stories were more engaging.
It took me two months to get through these "novels" because they were so boring. You can tell an interesting story in the present tense. These stories had a strange combination of super short sentences with oddly arcane vocabulary. (Many of which turned out to be local names for food items or dances.) The stories are so short calling them novels is a joke - I notice the title tries to have it both ways. Chapters are typically about five sentences long. Here is one of the most egregious ones: "El dia de Miguel empieza a las 7am. A las 7am se despierta. A las 7.15am se baña. A las 7.30sm toma su desayuno. Y a las 9am empieza a trabajar."
The plots are strangely lacking, icky or just non-sensical as well. "Ana estudiante" is about a student who ends up going out with her. "Futbol in Madrid" is about a 50 year old guy who dreams of playing with Real Madrid. He meets a bigwig from the team who says he can play with them for a day and he does and scores a goal. "Tango Milonga" is about a tango teacher who breaks a leg and ends up dating his nurse. "Los novios" is about a couple who decide it's more fun not to get married and just have a honeymoon forever. "Muerte in Buenes Aires" is about a private detective who lures a suspect by going on a dating app disguised as a woman and then slapping handcuffs on the guy because? As far as I can tell the suspect hasn't done anything except take him home. Just bizarre.
I'm beginning to think my college German course did the right thing by throwing us into the deep end with a real novel that was very hard to parse, but at least was engaging and well-written.
All the books in this bundle are good for beginner/upper beginner Spanish learners. Stories have small chapters, so quick to finish. Stories are simple enough to understand and interesting enough to keep you engaged!
Paco Ardit is brilliant! I love these fun reads and they keep me so interested I want to keep learning. I can understand enough and learn at the same time because I can figure out by the context. I’m a huge fan and will continue to purchase more books. Thank you Paco!!!
I’m a beginner at Spanish. I have just finished these books. They’re great for adult beginners. They won’t win any awards, but they’re short, use simple language and present tenses, and were sufficiently challenging.
The stories are easy to follow and fun to read. The words I don't know I look up within the Kindle app., very easy. I will be buying the next set of books at the next level.
