Maer Lakrius feels content and secure in his role of a second-born child in the royal household until the battlefield of Vanas rips his reality apart.
Helpless to prevent his older brother's death, Maer returns to the kingdom defeated, and must face not only the weight of his loss, but the burden of becoming Emberya's Crown Prince. A burden, made even worse by the changes in the world Maer believes only he can see.
Unknowingly, the young prince's fate becomes entwined with that of a woman—an 18-year-old mercenary with a past she would rather forget, and struggles eerily similar to Maer's own.
But with the continent and their different lives lying between them, will the Winds succeed in bringing the two individuals together or will the ethereal, dark tendrils of the world destroy them first?

DNF @ 50% This is not a bad story, it just hadn't hooked me yet and I can find the motivation to continue reading. I found it somewhat boring, and confusing since settings changed rather abruptly.
I have voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book. This book was interesting to read because you get to see the lives of two very different people and see how they are in their everyday lives. You get to see what they have to go through with being used by their parents and how will they respond. It was really well written and it leaves you wanting more.
Interesting world building. I can't get a hold on the characters and the jumps between times are not clear. Maybe more editing would have solved these minor glitches in an otherwise engaging story.
Though somewhat disjointed this lays good ground work for a trilogy set. Why not send both princes to get the special training before the expedition? Why have a character so flawed in a position of power that putting him down is a reasonable thing to do? Why the reveal to the story character but not the reader?
I really enjoyed this book and so looking forward to the next one. I do hope that there is a book before this one though. The author takes you along for the ride, and I like that. I am looking forward to seeing how the story plays out... Great storytelling and well just awesome. Ready to read more.
The plot is so slow. We have two stories and points of view that I assume will intertwine in future books. However they took so long to get to the point of the story that I got bored. What I would call the climax of the book was the very end. It was supposed to be a cliff hanger but it unfortunately wasn’t enough to get me to continue with this series.
Maker is content in his role of second in the Royal household. Unfortunately his older brother dies and now he is in line. Great fantasy story that keeps you reading
