The great promises of God seem to be only partially fulfilled. The work of the kingdom seems to be moving very slowly, if at all. Unbelievers all around God's people seem to have a better time of it. The people of God are distracted, discouraged & half-hearted in their commitment to the work God has given them to do. For many believers, that describes our situation & the state of our hearts, just as it describes the situation & the hearts of God's people in Haggai's day. The call of Haggai & of this book is to catch again the vision of God's purposes for His people & the world & to work wholeheartedly at what He has given us to do.
If you're preaching or teaching Haggai, I would highly recommend you get hold of this book. It's a brilliantly clear exposition of Haggai. It's short (93 pages), but it's the fruit of deep reflection on the text - including two appendices on tricky interpretative questions. And Jonathan Griffiths does a good job of showing the relevance of these verses for today, both in his comments and in some reflection questions at the end of each chapter. I've definitely been blessed by it in my preaching series through Haggai.
I suspect that if I asked you to tell me what is the relevance of the 6th century BC prophet Haggai to your life... I'd be met with a blank stare.
Thankfully, you don't have to wonder. Because in this wonderfully punchy exposition of the Minor Prophet Haggai, Jonathan Griffiths in five chapters opens up the message of Haggai to us today. Have we lost our devotion to the Lord's work in this world? Do we struggle to see signs of God's Kingdom growing in this world? Do we need to be spurred on to good works? Are we trusting in our own good works to make us right with God? What hope do we have for the future? Are all questions that are dealt with by Griffiths as he applies Haggai to our lives today. Each chapter ends with some personal application questions and an there are a couple of useful appendixes at the back of the book too that discuss some of the trickier theological issues that Haggai raises for us.
I've been using this commentary as I prepare to preach a sermon series in Haggai. But I could easily recommend it to anyone who wants to know what God is saying to us today through his messenger, Haggai.
