Losing Time

People don’t vanish without a reason...

What happens when a man with a young wife and teenage daughter learns he has another child?

What if he travels to a foster home to retrieve his son, but on the return journey something inexplicable prevents them from reaching their destination?

And what if, twenty years on, the daughter receives a cryptic clue to her father’s whereabouts?

‘Losing Time’ is a very human story about a young divorced woman trying to find the father who never returned home. Her search is baffling, unsettling and shrouded in mystery. It takes her on a journey beyond the boundaries of normal life, but don’t expect this story to turn into a run-of-the-mill science-fiction fantasy because it’s anything but. Woven into the intriguing plot are characters both delightful and abhorrent; moments of love and loss, loyalty and betrayal; and the ongoing question: who is chasing whom?

You'll find this book in the fantasy section of the book store but there are no swords or sorcery, no hackneyed warriors or magicians. It's fantasy in a truly original form where music and colour have power and time-travelling aliens are destroying the fabric of the universe.

Set in the beautiful countryside of England and Ireland, you will immediately care about Helen who despite losing her father at a young age and her husband to a younger woman has the resilience and determination to persevere and unravel the mysteries unfolding around her. The book has a great plot that keeps you turning the pages but it is the cast of characters that draw you in, grab hold and won't let go.

If you, like me, had almost given up reading fantasy because of the now tired stories of the hero traipsing across an invented world to meet/do battle with elves, goblins, gnomes etc and finally defeat the all powerful evil, then you have to buy this book. It's fantasy but not as you know it and you'll love it. - Well I did.

I only wish this book were in print in addition to the online version I read. It's the sort of story I wanted to carry with me, to read whenever I had a spare moment, because it engaged me immediately and it was hard to put down. I don't own a tablet or e-reader, so I had to read it on my laptop. Once pulled in by the imaginative tale and its oddball characters, I had little will to close the doc and work on my own writing! Maybe I just was procrastinating. Losing Time is a quirky sci-fi journey that gives us plenty of backstory without interrupting the narrative. Any time-travel-based story I've read has perplexing moments as it jumps from one place and moment to another, but P.R. Ford keeps it all together and has us wanting to stay in touch with her characters, in my case especially Tobias, long after the Epilogue.

This is a very enjoyable book! I was hooked from the beginning. I was very impressed with the author's imagination--she created numerous characters from different racial groups in space, all of whom had fascinating senses and skills. The narrative moved along at a quick pace--definitely a page-turner. The plot was complicated and a little confusing at times, but was very well conceived. The book ends with several issues unresolved, and the author indicates that she plans a sequel. I'm looking forward to the sequel because I grew to care about these characters and want to see how things work out for them. Kudos to P.R. Ford!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book - it wasn't what I expected at all. There was time travel, aliens, even the hint of a love story running throughout. The characters were nicely rounded and likeable (apart from those you weren't supposed to like). The novel ended in such a way as to make it clear that there will be at least one sequel. Which I'm pleased about. Very well written and innovative. Well done, P.R. Ford! I look forward to the next instalment.

The author's imagination turns a page turner into a true stunner.
It's a fairly complex plot but always followable, the characters are brought to life in a subdued way, rather like we are meeting them and getting to know them.
The timeline of the story does tend to jump about somewhat and, occasionally, I needed to jump back a few pages to refresh my memory of a certain happening. This, however, does not detract from the story as it is all about jumps in time. Indeed, had it been told in a linear fashion, I felt it would have lost some part of the narrative.
One slight criticism is that the dialogue between the human characters is, at times, rather stilted and reminds one of Enid Blyton writing in the nineteen fifties. The dialogue between alien characters and humans, however, is spot on and now I have several new catchphrases.
Overall, I consider this a remarkable achievement for a new, first time author encompassing time travel, relativistic theory and human emotional development in one complete novel.

Well, this is a conundrum - do I review my own book? Since I only realised this morning that it's been ten years since I finished writing this, then perhaps I can be indulged. Suffice it to say that I very much enjoyed it, and at no time did I lose interest. Maybe there are parts I would write differently now, but I'm sure any author would say that. Being introduced to my favourite character was a delight, and I really must settle down and finish the third volume now.

I'm not going to rate it, I don't think I should. Oh... go on then, five stars of course!
