Jason isn't afraid of monsters. He is a native of Brunswick, the small town where the weird, magical, undead, and otherworldly live alongside humans in peace. What Jason does fear is middle school. To his relief, he makes a new friend immediately--Alex, a vampire and fellow Brunswickan. When Jason finds himself pursued by an unknown enemy with deadly intent, Alex and his formidable housemates take the boy under their protection It soon becomes apparent that the ancient prophecies they have been studying are inextricably linked to Jason's current crisis.
On another continent, a teenager named Richie is desperately searching for someone who might explain why his nightmares come true and how to make them stop. An encounter with a werewolf almost ends his quest forever, but he is rescued by an eccentric stranger who believes Richie will be able to get some answers from the maddeningly elusive physician Sally Kitch. Someone, however, seems determined that Richie and Sally never meet.
I'm a small-town North Carolina author who writes at the nebulous place where horror, sci-fi, and fantasy converge. I currently live with my two cats, Joon and Wednesday. I am fond of B-rated horror movies, outdated music, weird science, and getting lost in other worlds.
My first short story, "Anew," is a creepy tale of insidious goop, published in summer of 2012. My debut novel, Nightfall, was published by Prospective Press in 2016. The sequel, Blood Magik, is out now!
I very much enjoyed this book! I found the beginning (prologue) to be rather dull and unappealing. I absolutely loved that the girls were nymphs, but I couldn't get past the excessive descriptions. Describing things is one thing, but overly describing every little detail is just too much. I'm not one to be into the highly descriptive books. I give props to the author however, because the book gets sooo much better. I was already hooked after chapter one.
The world is one in which humans and the supernatural live together. There are genies, witches, werewolves, nymphs, vampires, and my favorite Cotus. A Cotu is a cat like creature, but the author takes it to a level i've never really seen. Cotus are put into classes by different elements like fire or water for instance or there is also ice and electricity. I personally just find them fascinating. They can shape shift and they are full grown by, I believe it was, age two. I found the Cotus to be the most intriguing.
In case you were wondering I can give you a little bit of an idea about what the story is about. Sally is on a mission, with the help of her friends Alex, Jenna, Scarlet, and Hope to find all of the guardians before its too late and the end of the world begins. As readers we follow two people: Jason and Richie. The POV sometimes switches to say Alex, Hope, or even the bad guys (I don't want to ruin it for you so we will just call them that), but mostly its either Richie or Jason. Richie is trying desperately to find Sally so she can cure his nightmares and Jason just happens to be a Brunswick resident who befriends Alex and realizes he may have a more powerful destiny then he ever realized.
The characters: For the most part they were actually really delightful. Jack was by far my favorite character. I loved the mystery that surrounded him. I felt like I was constantly itching to get just a little bit more information about him. The Richie and Jack storyline was amusing. Their banter back and forth was very entertaining.
I found that Jason had some elements about him that kind of reminded me of Harry Potter believe it or not. I thought Jason was written well and stayed true to his age.
I enjoyed Dracula and Alex as well. My heart broke for Alex. He was charming and witty. Dracula had a saracastic thing going on that made him fun to read.
Jenna, Scarlet, and Hope were intriguing. The thing about these three is you don't really get to know them in the book, but there are little tid bits and clues in the book that help you get some what of a sense of who they are. I'm actually looking forward to the author getting more into the Hope and Jenna storylines.
Sally. What can I say about her? Personally I would have liked to punch her in the face. Not just once, but many times. Someone really needs to knock some sense into her. To put it vaguely, her heart is made of pure ice. I hated her. But I enjoyed her intelligence. It is hard not to have a respect for the kind of intelligence that Sally has. I will give her some credit, because I do believe throughout the book that she is trying and really what more can you ask for?
This is a world I would love to return to. I cannot wait until the second book is done and I wish the author the best of luck!
*This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review*
This debut novel sets the stage for an epic collect-them-all/world-saving adventure. The world-building is a unique blend of the familiar and unfamiliar with a large cast of characters - there's something for everyone! Excited to see what happens next!
I loved reading about Brunswick! the town and the people had so many secrets, and they were still revealing them through the end of the book! I loved the unique paranormal aspects, a little different from the same old same old. It took me a bit to really care about some of the characters, but they grew on me, and by the end, I can't wait to get my hands on the next book! Love this series!
