Elias is a changeling, a man without hormones, emotionless. Emotional Modification Therapy has made logic and reason powerful, but new information questions the validity of the process. Elias has no desires. It wouldn’t be natural. Until a woman, Aloisa, walks into his lab at the hospital and unfamiliar cravings overpower him. Aloisa’s husband, Jordan, is convinced that the monetary reward for becoming a changeling will be enough for Aloisa to live lavishly. Against her wishes, he leaves. She knows why; she refuses to let him disappear. She would much prefer love to money. In pursuit of Jordan and freedom, Aloisa and Elias are both on the run from the government. Their paths intersect, and their true connection becomes clear; Elias’s emotions return with a vengeance. But will they be allowed to survive after all they’ve been through?

I’ve had this one on my TBR shelf for a while, because I have to be in just the right mood to read science fiction. Once the mood struck, however, I read Emotionless in one long stretch, hooked by the excellent writing and terrific pacing. The story is told in first-person point of view from two main characters with very distinct voices. Elias, who has gone through Emotional Modification Therapy and therefore has no emotions, must have been tricky to write, but the author pulls it off splendidly. The way the two main characters’ stories intersect was a surprise—there are definitely some great plot twists to keep you guessing in Emotionless!
Why isn’t this a movie yet? A complex first novel by Amie McKracken alternating between two first person narratives, this is a love story, a warning, a call to war, set in a dystopian future that could quite conceivably be only moments away. Emotionless sets out to illustrate why our baser human traits can also be our greatest gifts. And at a time when our own societies are starting to question the automatic authority of our leaders, this is a timely lesson in listening to our inner selves. Amie has produced a fast-paced narrative that had me from the start. I can’t recommend this book enough.
