Munshi Premchand

Munshi Premchand (Hindi: मुंशी प्रेमचंद) was an Indian writer famous for his modern Hindustani literature. He is one of the most celebrated writers of the Indian subcontinent, and is regarded as one of the foremost Hindustani writers of the early twentieth century.

Born Dhanpat Rai, he began writing under the pen name "Nawab Rai", but subsequently switched to "Premchand", while he is also known as "Munshi Premchand", Munshi being an honorary prefix. A novel writer, story writer and dramatist, he has been referred to as the "Upanyas Samrat" ("Emperor among Novelists") by some Hindi writers. His works include more than a dozen novels, around 250 short stories, several essays and translations of a number of foreign literary works into Hindi.

Premchand is considered the first Hindi author whose writings prominently featured realism. His novels describe the problems of the poor and the urban middle-class. His works depict a rationalistic outlook, which views religious values as something that allows the powerful hypocrites to exploit the weak. He used literature for the purpose of arousing public awareness about national and social issues and often wrote about topics related to corruption, child widowhood, prostitution, feudal system, poverty, colonialism and on the India's freedom movement.

Several of his early works, such as A Little Trick and A Moral Victory, satirised the Indians who cooperated with the British colonial government.

In the 1920s, he was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi's non-cooperation movement and the accompanying struggle for social reform. During this period, his works dealt with the social issues such as poverty, zamindari exploitation (Premashram, 1922), dowry system (Nirmala, 1925), educational reform and political oppression (Karmabhumi, 1931).

In his last days, he focused on village life as a stage for complex drama, as seen in his most famous work Godan as well as the short-story collection Kafan (1936).Premchand believed that social realism was the way for Hindi literature, as opposed to the "feminine quality", tenderness and emotion of the contemporary Bengali literature.

This year I planned to read more Hindi books but it got sidelined so I decided to add it in my monthly reading challenge. The title of this book makes me choose this book. After reading Nirmala, I had a high hope with this book.

It’s been over fifteen years since I last read a Hindi novel, so reading Premchand’s Prema was my way of re-starting my journey into Hindi literature.

First published in 1907, perhaps Premchand's 'Prema' is too simple for modern readers and yet, it's not as hard to appreciate the plot when you think of it contextually. Set in Vanarasi (then 'Benaras'), one of India's holiest cities, Prema is a love story that attempts to recast 'widow re-marriage' in a positive light, since it was considered blasphemous by many at the time.

Premchand picked a complex, controversial issue and spun it into a relatable tale of love, affection, and rebellion. Prema is a beautiful young woman, engaged to handsome lawyer Amrit Rai. They're both from wealthy, influential families, a match made with parental approval. However, when Amrit Rai decides to dedicate his time in doing social work, strange rumors fly in town about him converting into Christianity.

Again, as a modern reader, I found it peculiarly amusing that a young educated man's decision to hold discussions about social reforms, build orphanages, and promote widow remarriage, was instantly interpreted as him abandoning his religion. Of course, it's a deliberate ploy by the author to mock the religious elite.

Alarmed at the rumors regarding Amrit Rai, Prema's influential father calls off the wedding, leaving the lovers heartbroken. But Amrit starts turning his attention towards a widow, first only out of concern, and then due to genuine affection. However, the entire town goes up in arms, ready to riot and burn homes at the mere mention of a possible 'widow re-marriage'.

Ironically, 'Prema' is a side-character in this tale, despite the title leading the reader to believe she might be the titular protagonist. For almost 80% of her scenes, she is only weeping, or grieving. Amrit is the hero of this story, the handsome, dashing, idealistic lawyer, but not without his flaws.
For instance, in the climactic pages of the book, Amrit finds himself increasingly isolated in the society due to his reformative deeds and one of the things he is upset about is the fact that all his 'servants' stop coming to work. The upper class privilege is comical - on one hand Amrit dreams of an equal world, on the other, he thinks himself crippled because half his house staff quit. In-fact, you can't help but wonder if his desire to marry a widow is an act of charity or love. Especially since Premchand rushes with the tale. But well, at least Amrit is not all talk and no work.

Overall, 'Prema' is an engaging novel, even if quite predictable. But I imagine this would've been a thrilling, tense, shocking tale of love, defiance, rebellion when it came out.

Premchand's language is simple, easy to read, and takes you back to a time when it was incredibly stifling to be a young woman. It's a good reminder of how far we've come.

The book tackles the social issue of widow marriage, the story has a set up around the Indian independence struggle, the time when there were many issues in the society ie. child marriage, widow marriage, sati (burning of females at her husband's funeral pyre), inter caste or interfaith marriage, heirs of the property etc. Munshi Premchand chose the issue of widow marriage and wrote a masterpiece 'Prema'. It deals with how society reacts when a widow is married especially one sect (brahman), a person who can have all the worldly pleasures and can marry anybody in her caste (social strata), but decides to marry a widow , a step that could ruin his life and reputation, and what happens to him afterwards how society reacts to is the story all about, the story also touches the issue of intercaste marriage but doesn't go into detail. More writing will be a spoiler, it's a good story with a social cause.

Second novel by Munshi Premchand, this was published in two languages: Prema in Hindi and Hamkhurma-o-Ham Sawab in Urdu.

The story is about Amritrai, a young, brahmin lawyer from a wealthy family in Benaras, who joins the reform movement of 18th century. Historically, this reform movement in reality had been responsible for several groundbreaking changes, in the Indian society, like promotion of widow remarriage and education of girls and women, abolition of Sati and child marriage, opposition of caste system etc.

Amritrai dedicates his life to such reform works, despite alienation from society, even the breakup of his marriage alliance by his fiancee's father. As a result of his broken alliance, and mostly to implement the reforms as much as possible into his own life, he marries a widow he has fallen in live with. The rest of the story is about the scandal caused in Benaras and life thereafter.

The plot is very small, and has hints of rawness in Premchand's writing. He often slips into the role of a narrator conversing directly with the readers while commenting on the characters or the scenes. But even then this book contains Premchand's brilliance in accurately portraying the contemporary society and its evils, the lifestyle, the people and the settings; and his grasp over language. While the urdu version is purely in urdu, the hindi version has beautifully blended Urdu, Hindi and Bhojpuri. The language singlehandedly makes it a pleasant reading.

The plot itself is tightly knit. There are no excessive digressions, in fact the story moves so quickly that there are sudden shifts between chapters, thus making this a very quick read.

Prema may not be the best works of Munshi Premchand, but it doesn't disappoint.

Premchand is a prolific Hindi writer of many notable novels. I used to read his stories when I was a child but then I started picking up reading in other languages as well. So, I bought this novel called Prema from Amazon.in. Sadly, I did not like the story. In fact, it enraged me. Prema a protagonist in this novel is in love with Amrutrai who is a social reformer. He vows to dedicate his life to bring social reforms and he denies marriage with Prema. But then later on he starts falling in love with a Brahmin widower named Purna. First of all, he says that he wants to dedicate his life to social welfare of a society and later on wants to marry a widower in the name of social change. What nonsense is this? On the other hand, Prema is still madly in love with him even after marrying to Dannath. It enrages him as he says to Prema that a woman cannot love another man other than her husband. Dannath is a loving, loyal husband but he does not get love in return and decides to take revenge by killing Amrutrai.
Again, Purna whose husband died in a tragedy does not get bothered much what people are talking about. I found her character very selfish when she herself says to Prema that my husband was at least with me for 2 years but you never got your much-deserved love from Amrutrai. When she knows that Prema dearly loves Amrutrai and still continues her affair with her own best friend's lover.
Thankfully, in the end Purna dies as she tries to save her husband from Dannath's rage. Unfortunately, Dannath never receives his love but dies in vain. The story is set in 1800's era and the widower still dares to love another man just after her husband's death. Amrutrai marries Prema after two years of his wife's death. I don't find this story inspiring enough to bring social change or exciting one. In fact, it rages me the boldness of Purna and idiocy of Prema.
I hope to find better story to read next time when I pick up another novel by Premchand.

I had never read Hindi literature before and was meaning to explore it since a long time. This book was a completely random choice towards this objective. Needless to say, this is also my first exposure to Mushi Premchandji's literature except, of course, few chapters read in school Hindi textbooks.

I'm amazed at the way author is able to beautifully represent the pre-independence era through his words. The style of writing is also quite unique and unlike any other author I've read before. Form of Hindi used is quite rich with adjectives and phrases which are rarely seen nowadays in spoken Hindi.

I must say that the story was better than my expectations and is quite simple. The author is able to bring characters alive through his succinct descriptions. It gave me a feel of watching an old Hindi black and white movie. My only complaint is "Prema" is not an appropriate name for this book since the she is merely a supporting character. Also, I found the ending to be quite abrupt.

Nevertheless it has piqued my interest in Hindi stories and look forward to reading his other works. Next book on the list is named "Godaan".

Happy reading !!

I have been wanting to read hindi literature for a while now. Who better than Premchand to start with.

The book depicts sociological web of gender, marriage, caste, love, friendship and companionship through a beautiful story. The narration of emotional dilemmas in a ganga-kinare land keeps you hooked all the time.

A rich man decides to join the cause of social reforms and faces backlash from the religious fundamentalists. He decides to marry a widow and faces a bigger backlash from the religious fundamentalists. A nice story set in the time of British India and issues caused by uber conservatism.

A very simple book, depicting the time when widow women were not allowed marriage. It feels very strange to read about that time, absurdity of all that, vehemence of people against this idea. It feels strange to think that special kind of bravery is required of a man who plans to marry a widow. It used to be a life threatening decision. Yet, there were people like that and because of such people, society progresses. Premchand in very simple, day to day language tells this story, extraordinary because of the time and place.
It also feels very strange that I'm the first reviewer of this book. :)
