About the author

V.K.N.' or VKN (abbreviated from his full name Vadakkke Koottala Narayanankutty Nair) (6 April 1932 - 25 January 2004) was a pathbreaking and celebrated Malayalam writer, noted mainly for his high-brow satire. Apart from novels, he wrote short stories and political commentaries. A native of Kerala in south India, his works are considered distinctive for their multi-layered humour, trenchant criticism of the socio-political classes and uncanny ability to twist the meanings of words contextually, thus lend a touch of magic to his language (which, at times, was English too).
VKN's works call for an attentive and informed reader who can recognise his allusions and follow his changes in language, where he shifts between English, Hindi, Malayalam and a distinctive variety of Tamil spoken by the Iyer community in Palakkad. In most cases, the use of language other than Malayalam is immediately followed by a translation (in parentheses), but these translations have little do with what they stand for in the original.
Born on 6 April 1932, in Thiruvilwamala in Thrissur district, VKN, after completing his matriculation, joined the Malabar Devaswom Board and worked there for 9 years. Like a good number of modern Malayalam writers like O. V. Vijayan, VKN spent many years in New Delhi (from 1959 to 1969) as an English journalist. The experiences he gained during these years that also coincided with the nascent post-independent India finds a recreation in one of his most heralded work, Pitamahan (The Great Grandfather). He entered Malayalam literature in 1955.
VKN is considered as a genius, for his knowledge in philosophy, history, art, politics, literature (both Indian and Western; ancient and modern), social issues, ethnicity, agriculture, astrology and sport. It merits some acquaintance with his writing style and deep understanding of language and politics to really comprehend and appreciate his wit and insight. Due to this reason, it is near impossible to convey his brilliance in translations and it is very difficult even for those who understand Malayalam to fully grasp his multi-dimensional wizardry.
His humour comes from inverting his own language to expose both the inner workings and shortcomings of our languages as a means of communication. In certain stories/narrations, the characters of the story/narration comment about the author. Malayalam critics have yet to understand him well, and a proper study about his works and style is yet to happen in the language. VKN served as vice-chairperson of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, Thrissur. He had also chaired the Kunchan Smarakam at Killikkurussimangalam near Ottappalam.

This is one of the best political satires ever written in Malayalam.

The specialty of this book is that even though it was written five decades ago, each event mentioned in it is still relevant. We will see many people like the characters in this story in the current political scenario.

If you are a fan of movies like Sandesham, you should never miss this book.

'പയ്യൻ കഥകൾ' രണ്ടു പ്രാവശ്യം(ഒരു ദശകത്തിനു മുൻപും, കഴിഞ്ഞ വർഷവും) വായിച്ചതിന് ശേഷമാണ് ആരോഹണം വായിക്കുന്നത്. എഴുപതിൽപരം ചെറുകഥകളിലൂടെ അറിഞ്ഞ പയ്യനെ ഈ ഒറ്റ പുസ്തകത്തിലൂടെ കൂടുതൽ മനസിലാക്കാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞു.

തലസ്ഥാന നഗരിയിൽ രാഷ്ട്രീയ ചൂടിൽ, മന്ത്രി സഭയിൽ സ്ഥാനം ഉറ്റുനോക്കി, പരസ്പരം മത്സരിക്കുന്ന രണ്ടു സംഘങ്ങളുടെ, ഇരു തലയും പിടിച്ചു കലഹിച്ചു, അവരുടെ ചുമലിൽ കയറി ചെവിതിന്നു ഒന്നുമില്ലായ്മയിൽ നിന്നും തൻ മിടുക്ക്ക്കൊണ്ട് ഉയർച്ചയിലേക്കുള്ള പയ്യന്റെ ആരോഹണമാണ് നോവലിന്റെ ഇതിവൃത്തം.

പയ്യൻ ഒരു 'നല്ലപിള്ള' നായകനല്ല. സകല വഷളത്തരവും ഇഷ്ടൻറെ പക്കലുണ്ട്. പയ്യൻസിന്റെ ആത്മഗതങ്ങളിൽ മുക്കാലോഹരിയിലും സ്ത്രീകളെക്കുറിച്ച് മോശം വാക്കുകൾ ഉരുവിടുന്നുണ്ട്. 'തെറിച്ചവൻ' 'തലത്തെറിച്ചവൻ' എന്നിങ്ങനെയല്ലാമാണ് എഴുത്തുക്കാരൻ തന്നെ മൂപ്പരെ പലയിടത്തും അഭിസംബോധന ചെയ്യുന്നത്.(പയ്യന്റെ ഒരംശം 'വി.കെ. എന്നി'ലുമുണ്ടെന്ന് വേണം കരുതാൻ - അതോ നേരെ തിരിച്ചാണോ! - സ്ത്രീകളോടുള്ള പെരുമാറ്റത്തിലെ 'ചൊവ്വില്ലായ്യ്മയെ' പറ്റി ഒന്നിൽകൂടുതലിടത്ത് വായിച്ചറിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്. മാധവിക്കുട്ടിയുടെ 'എന്റെ കഥക്ക്' എഴുതിയ 'എന്റെ ഭർത്താവിന്റെ കഥ' എന്ന പാരഡി സൃഷ്ടിയിലെ ഭാഷ വായിച്ചപ്പോഴും എം. ലീലാവതിയുടെ ആഭിമുഖങ്ങൽ കണ്ടപ്പോഴും ആ സംശയങ്ങൾക്ക് കനം വെച്ചു. അഹ്, അല്ലെങ്കിലെന്ത്! 'സൃഷ്ടാവിനെ മറക്കുക, സൃഷ്ടിയെ ആഘോഷിക്കുക' എന്ന തത്വസംഹിതയാണ് - ചെറിയ നീക്കുപോക്കുകളിലൂടെ - ഈയുള്ളവൻ അനുവർത്തിച്ച വരുന്നത്). നട്ടപാതിരക്ക് വേശ്യാലയത്തിൽ കേറിച്ചെന്നതിന് തുടർന്നുണ്ടാകുന്ന രംഗങ്ങളിൽ പയ്യൻ കാണിക്കുന്ന സാഹസങ്ങൾ, ഇക്കാലത്തെ മസാലപടങ്ങളിലെ സൂപ്പർ നായകന്മാരുടെ ഹീറോയിസത്തോട് കിടപിടിക്കുന്നു.
ഇങ്ങനെയെല്ലാം ആണെങ്കിലും പയ്യന്റെ ഉള്ളിലെവിടെയോ ഒരു മനുഷ്യ സ്നേഹിയുണ്ട്. പാർശവൽക്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ട സമൂഹങ്ങൾ തങ്ങൾനേരിടുന്ന കൊടിയക്രൂരതകളെ പറ്റി വിവരിക്കുന്നിടത്ത് പയ്യൻ 'കരയാതിരിക്കാൻ ചിരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്'. 'തനിക്ക് രാഷ്ട്രീയമില്ലെന്ന്' പലയിടത്തും ആവർത്തിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും പയ്യന്റെ ജീവിതവീക്ഷണം ഒന്നുരണ്ടിടത്ത് ഭംഗ്യന്തരേണ വെളിവാകുന്നുണ്ട്:

"ബോലോ ഗോമാതാ കീ ജയ് " എന്ന വിളി പയ്യൻ ഏറ്റു പറയുന്നില്ല, പിന്നെയും ഏറ്റു പറയുന്നില്ല.

നോവലിൽ ഒരു കഥാപാത്രം സംസ്കാരത്തെ കുറിച്ചു വാചാലനാകുമ്പോൾ നാസ്തി ജർമനിയിലെ ഗോറിങ്ങിന്റെ വാക്കുകൾ പയ്യന് ഓർമ വരുന്നു: "സംസ്കാരം എന്ന വാക്കു കേൾക്കുമ്പോൾ ഞാൻ എന്റെ റിവോൾവർ തേടുന്നു".

മോഹിപ്പിക്കുന്ന മലയാളം. ചുണ്ടിൽ വിരിഞ്ഞ ചെറു പുഞ്ചരിക്കപ്പുറം വായനയ്ക്കിടെ കിൻഡിൽ സ്‌ക്രീനിൽ നോക്കി പൊട്ടിചിരിച്ചത് പലതവണ. ആക്ഷേപ ഹാസ്യത്തിൻറെ ഒട്ടും കാരുണ്യമില്ലാത്ത ഒളിയമ്പുകൾ. പരിഭാഷയ്ക്ക് വഴങ്ങാത്ത എഴുത്ത് (വി.കെ.എൻ സൃഷ്ട്ടികൾ മൊഴിമാറ്റത്തിനിറങ്ങണമെങ്കിൽ എല്ലിന് നല്ല കനം വേണം). ഫലിതത്തിന്റെ മേമ്പോടിയിൽ, '60 കളുടെ രണ്ടാം പാദത്തിലെ (വർത്തമാനക്കാലത്തിലും പ്രസക്തമായ) പ്രധാന രാഷ്ട്രീയ സംഭവങ്ങൾ ('66-ൽ ഗോഹത്യയ്ക്കെതിരെ ചില സംഘടനകളുടെ പിന്തുണയോടെ നാഗസന്യാസിമാർ പാർലമെന്റിനു മുൻപിൽ നടത്തിയ പ്രകടനവും തുടർന്നുണ്ടാകുന്ന പോലീസ് വെടിവെപ്പും അക്രമസംഭവങ്ങളടക്കം) നോവലിൽ പ്രധാന പശ്ചാത്തലമായി വരുന്നുണ്ട്. ഒപ്പം, ജീവിച്ചിരുന്ന പ്രസിദ്ധ വ്യക്തിത്വങ്ങളായ പലരും നോവലിൽ പരാമർശിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. മദിരാശിക്കാരനും മഹാമൗനിയുമായ 'അദ്ധ്യക്ഷമഹോദയൻ' പ്രാധാന്യമുള്ള ഒരു കഥാപാത്രമായി പുസ്തകത്തിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷപെടുന്നുണ്ട്(കക്ഷി ആരാണെന്ന് ഈ പുസ്തകം വായിച്ച ചരിത്രകുതുകികളായ ചിലർക്കെങ്കിലും പിടിക്കിട്ടി കാണും).


വാൽകഷ്ണം:

രസകരമായ ഒരു ആകസ്മികത:

ആരോഹണം വായിക്കുന്നതിനു സമാന്തരമായാണ് 'Notes from Underground' വായിക്കുന്നത്. പയ്യനെ പോലെ തന്നെ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടാൻ കഴിയാത്ത ഒരാളാണ് ഇതിലും പ്രധാന കഥാപാത്രം. ദസ്തയേവസ്ജിയുടെ ഈ കൃതിയുടെ രണ്ടാം ഭാഗത്തിൻറെ തുടക്കത്തിൽ, തന്നെ അപമാനിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ഓഫീസറുടെ ശ്രദ്ധ പിടിച്ചു പറ്റാൻ, നായകൻ പണം കടം വാങ്ങി പുത്തൻ കോട്ടൊക്കെ ധരിച്ചു ചെല്ലുന്നുണ്ട്. സമാനമായ ഒരു രംഗം ആരോഹണത്തിലും കണ്ടു:
" ഇളംചൂടുള്ള വെയിലേറ്റു മനോരാജ്യത്തിലെ കഥാപാത്രമായി പയ്യൻ പതുക്കെ ആഫീസിലേക്ക് നടന്നു. വഴിപോക്കർ, ആൺപെൺ ജനം, തൻറെ പുതുവേഷത്തെ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുന്നിലെ എന്ന് പയ്യെ നിരീക്ഷിച്ചു. ഉണ്ട് . വേണ്ടത്ര ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ജനത്തെ മാപ്പാക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നു. പയ്യൻ മനസ്സിൽ പറഞ്ഞു. വെറുതെയല്ല , കടമായി മുന്നൂറു രൂപയുടെ സ്യൂറ്റെടുത്തിട്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്. അവഗണന കാട്ടിയാൽ എല്ലാറ്റിനെയും ഹിംസിച്ചുകളയും കീടങ്ങളെ!"

A biting satire on Indian politics of the 60s, most of the observations made in it are relevant in our times as well. VKN mocks the entire political spectrum from the left to the right . The portion dealing with the welfare program for slums and the agitation against cow slaughter is tour de force writing. As usual VKN parakal

This is my first VKN book as part of reading Malayalam books. It is a satire set in 1960s but one can relate it to the current times as well. One thing that comes across is the dialogues and the reflections on the dialogues by Payyan. It is a very funny treatise on the political circus. One is surprised that within a couple of decades after independence, the polity had declined to this level of lust for power and inner struggles so subtly portrayed in the storyline.

Satire at its best!

60കളിലെ രാഷ്ട്രീയം ഡൽഹിയിൽ അടുത്തു കണ്ട ഒരാളുടെ പരിപ്രേക്ഷ്യം. പക്ഷേ ഇന്നും അതിന്റെ പ്രസക്തി മാറിയിട്ടില്ല. രാഷ്ട്രീയ ആക്ഷേപഹാസ്യം അതിന്റെ ഒറിജിനാലിറ്റിയിൽ. ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ ചാനൽകുട്ടന്മാരും ട്രോളന്മാരുമെല്ലാം വീകെഎന്നിന്റെ മുന്നിൽ ആരുമല്ല. ഇത് വായിച്ചെങ്കിൽ പയ്യൻകഥകൾ കൂടി വായിക്കാൻ അപേക്ഷ.
