Lauren and Chase are childhood sweethearts, having been together since they were just thirteen years old. Now, Chase is a major football star and Lauren is about to graduate from college. But Chase isn’t certain he is on the right path; he had long felt the need to join the military to serve his country, just as his brother had.
And it is one fateful phone call that changes everything. His brother, Braden, is wounded in the line of duty, and his injuries prove fatal. Upon learning of his brother’s fate, Chase decides to enlist.
What he doesn’t know, as he signs those papers, is that Lauren is pregnant. He refuses to consider her following him to the Middle East, and she refuses to consider a long-distance relationship. Rather than telling him about his child, she breaks up with him and lets him go on to live his life.
Four years pass, and Chase is back. But will Lauren consider opening her heart to him again? And how will he react when he discovers his secret son?
Talk about an angsty read....my eyes kept springing leaks. If you want an emotional, angsty story, then here it is. Unfortunately, it was just too emotional for me.
First and foremost, I have to say that at different times throughout the book, I wanted to knock the H/h's head together. The making life altering decisions that impacted the others life, without discussing it first, was uncalled for.
Chase had great hero moments. Did he make some bad choices? Absolutely. Did he make them after a horrible loss, while emotional? Yes. Did he realize it relatively fast? Again, yes. He made a life changing decision without even consulting the woman he had loved and was building a future with. She knew he thought of enlisting because they had talked about it, but they always said she would go with him. When he told her that he had not only enlisted, he wasn't taking her with him, she was crushed, hurt, betrayed. He did try to contact her, calls, emails, letters...only to be ignored. Once he came back though, he was the hero I loved.
Lauren started off as a great heroine. She was so in love with Chase and her life revolved around him. She never dreamt there would be a time that they wouldn't be together. She was supportive of him and his family when Chase's brother died. She was patient when Chase was so lost. That was until Chase broke her. At this point, she went from fantastic to horrible. You see, IMO, you don't purposely keep a father from his child because you're heartbroken. You don't make decisions that impact everyone without giving the father a choice. I hate that. (Unless he is abusive or poses a threat) In an effort to keep the secret she even turned her back on his mom and dad (who loved her like a daughter and after the death of one son and the other son going into the line of fire would have adored their grandson) and their friends. She blocked his phone number and emails. She didn't even read the letters he wrote to her over the years, until he was back in town. He poured his heart out to her, she should have felt like shit. So all of the goodness she had at first, flew out the window.
-hero who I feel redeemed himself in the end. He made impulse decisions but tried to rectify them -unlikable heroine who although she started out with a big heart turned out to be selfish. She too made impulse decisions while emotions were high, but the difference is she DIDN'T try to rectify them. She was apologetic after awhile but it felt too little, too late. -pushing away almost the entire book -no cheating -no ow drama -om drama -epilogue 1 year later but it was lacking
*One thing that I found that was strange was at his brother's funeral, the recruiter was there (he had been friends with the brother at one time) and approached Chase about the fact he had filled out enlistment papers. I'm sorry, but they just lowered his brother into the ground after being killed in combat, and he's going to talk to him about his seriousness of his desire to enlist? Really?
Star Ratings: Heroine (Lauren): 22yrs old/26yrs old Hero (Chase): 22yrs old/26yrs old Plot: 4/5 Grovel: yes Cheating: none – both were celibate during separation HEA: yes with baby Triggers: none
Average score: 4/5
Best Line: “And now you’ve done with your soul-searching quest and you’re back home, you expect me to drop my life and run into your arms again? How is that fair? How is that right? You have no idea what I’ve been through. You have no idea about my life now. You made your choice and you left me alone so… fuck you very much.”
Worst Line: “I turned over and pretended to be asleep, knowing Lauren would emerge moments later.”
Personal Review: A good second chance romance with a grovel and celibacy. There were moments that I wanted to punch the H but also loved that he wrote her letters.
Random Ramblings •Wow, she is a perfect girlfriend •After reading so many romances with so many love scenes it was disappointing to read a romance where in their first love scene he gets off but she doesn’t and he promises her an orgasm THE NEXT DAY!
•He was an asshole for throwing her away and I liked that she blocked him •I was proud of her mum during the delivery •Aww, her and Cole running together was sweet •She was wrong to lie though •I am so pleased that there were no flashbacks
I really REALLY hated the hero. I automatically forgiven the heroine for hiding the pregnancy. I mean he doesn't want her for herself, I'm not gonna hold her responsible for cutting all ties and in process not telling him about the pregnancy. He didn't deserve to know. Throughout their whole relationship, she only gave, he only took. He enlisted in army without thinking about her without considering her feelings, deciding for herself to leave her behind because he thought she'd do exactly what he wants, she'd cave in one way or other because that's how their relationship has been. Even when she finally stood her ground and broke up he didn't believe for a minute that would last, because he ALWAYS had his way. His word, not mine. And word of apologies nonetheless. I can't believe he had the audacity to repeat these after the major fuck up as his excuse of fuck up. And I can't believe the heroine took him back knowing his reasons for acting the way he did. Sometimes love just isn't enough. He was an arrogant piece of ass. Whoever found his love for heroine sweet, well at least you enjoyed the book. I just couldn't care less. If he loved her then may be he should've thought "oh! I have always taken in this relationship, may be this is time to back off for a minute and give back" rather than "oh she'll cave in sooner or later so I'll just do what I want to anyway. I really don't see how that's love. I absolutely failed to find the sweet love the hero had for the ungrateful lying bitch of a heroine people were talking about. I really wanted to give the heroine a hug and a pat on the back. Sorry guys, I'm NOT one of those people who believe that every father has a right to know about their kid.
I started crying almost from the beginning. I would have given it more stars had it not been for the separation, which I know is basically what this whole book is about and them getting a second chance but separations have always bothered me. I love a strong couple that doesn't allow anything or anyone get in their way. It's hard to love them the same way when so much time has passed.
I will say I'm so happy that neither of them had another partner. It allowed me to enjoy their reunion so much more knowing they loved only each other.
I wanted more of Chase and Cole or the three of them together as a family. It felt too rushed once it was decided they would forgive and more forward.
Cute epilogue but way too short.
All in all I definitely liked this one. It had me emotional and rooting for their happiness in the end.

That was amazing. What well written book. The author did an amazing job making you feel exactly what the characters were feeling. I have cried my eye out, smiled, laughed, blushed, hated, and loved with them. Chase made big life changing mistakes that left Lauren and himself lost and heartbroken. How do you fix that.....they figured it out together thank goodness. Loved this book it's a MUST READ!!!!!!
This is so, well, boring. Everything happens exactly as you imagine a low angst, predictable romance to go. What makes it even harder to read is how boring, nondescript, stepford wife/husband and robotic the lead characters are. Emotions and reactions are not believablr/real. He never exhibits any anger at all over missing 4 years of his sons life?
Don't write a military novel if you know NOTHING about the military! it was just a very poorly written book just very repetitive and you just cant relate to either main character they where both selfish people and had like no personally!
Loved this book They had the perfect relationship of nine years, then it was shattered , then he expected to walk back in. Not so easy I cried through the book as it tore at my emotions.
I creid and cried , and just when I though I couldn't cry anymore I cried . This book took me on an emotional journey . Poor Chase was really going thru a lot while Lauren was soon faced with a difficult choice that would change her life forever. I loved every page of this book . I felt it pull at my heart strings . it was an awesome and emotional story .
I accidentally ran into this book. And let me just say that I was more than happy to have found it. This is the first book I have read by this author and I was surprised and excited. This love story is for the record books.
Lauren & Chase, Chase & Lauren. Thats what life was about. If you seen one, you were bound to see the other. From early adolescent these two were inseparable. They both knew from a very young age that they were just simply meant for each other. When one wanted to chase a dream the other followed. Early on in their relationship, Chase had expresses his interest at possibly joining the military like his older brother, Braden. It was in agreement early on that if that happened, they would marry and go wherever the military sent Chase. However, plans change. Some for the good and some for the bad. Chase ended up following Lauren to her College of choice and early on things changed. Chase ended up entering the NFL draft. With the help of Lauren, he was able to achieve Rookie of the year. Lauren was always into fitness. It was her dream to have her own gym one day. Chase and Lauren seemed unbreakable. They were seriously solid. Things dont always work perfectly and right when Chase was at the height and beginning of his football career, he started feeling inadequate and helpless. He wanted more of a purpose in his life. More of something that felt like he was contributing to something, like his brother Braden was doing. He was serving his country. He was brave and a hero. Chase became restless and just when he was at odds he gets the call. The call that will change his entire life as he has known it. Lauren being the supportive and loving girlfriend, sticks by Chase's side. She tries to help Chase through his turmoil but only feels like she is hindering his process. Through everything, Lauren finds herself sick and fatigued. When she finally learns the truth as to why, she is lost in her own thoughts. Pregnancy? Really? Just as she finally feels comfortable in telling Chase her news, he shares his own news and drops the ultimate bomb. He will be joining the military and she will not be joining him. He doesn't want to bring her into a dangerous zone and he basically breaks his promise to her of them always sticking together. These two end up breaking up and living their separate lives. He in the military and she graduating from college and her physical training, not including becoming a mother. What happens 4 years later when Chase returns from the military? Can ge get his girl back and make up for the past? Will Lauren finally reveal the truth and tell Chase about the baby? This will all be revealed. A beautiful story with a excellent HEA!!!!!
This book had potential but I found both characters so immature. He was just so selfish! And so was she! I had a problem with how she wrote about military life and Camp Pendleton is not in the vicinity of Los Angeles. It's 1.5-2 hours away. His football career was just briefly mentioned. He could've been a plumber before enlisting. It felt insignificant. It was meh for me.
Chase and Lauren had met when they 13 and had been together for 9 years. Lauren was graduating from college and Chase had been recruited to play in the NFL. They were soulmates. Then it all fell apart. It was written in 1st person one chapter Lauren the next chapter Chase. I really like this story and got caught up with the characters that at time I found myself crying for Chase or Lauren.
Lauren and Chase had been together since they were 13, he promised her forever, until sometimes bad things happen, life events, unforeseen happen, broken hearts. Lauren feels like her heart has been torn apart, will never heal, she is angry at a Chase. Chase now realizing he has made the worst decision of his life, but no way to contact her, but determined one day he will get her back. Will they be able to mend to broken hearts and forgive, trust again? Beautiful story❤️!
I really liked the premise of this book. I liked that they had stayed true to each other for four years. I usually hate long separations but this one worked. The h almost moved on and I was a little nervous about that but in the end she still loved Chase. I understood her anger and why she did what she did but I also loved Chase. He was a good man. He never even thought of moving on. It was always Lauren. I loved that.
** I am voluntarily reviewing an Advanced Reader Copy of this book** I liked this short book. Cole isn't sure of the direction his life is going, but finds out too late he only wants that life with Lauren. She feels betrayed and abandoned, so cuts herself off from him, his family, and mutual friends. What happens when he comes home to claim her is a solid, fast, interesting read. Free with KU subscription. Nella Tyler has done it again.
This book finished at 19%. It was ok, I liked the story well enough, even the characters, but they did annoy me a bit. There were quite a lot of grammatical errors and mistakes too which I hate.
