This book is for anyone who struggles with habits. It includes:The basic mechanics of forming a habit, the one reason we fail to stick to a habit, a dozen+ effective methods for overcoming that obstacle (tested by Leo and many others), solutions to the most common habit problems, and a whole section on forming the most common habits: exercise, eating healthily, meditation, journaling, writing, sleeping well, beating procrastination and more.
Leo Babauta is a simplicity blogger and author. He created Zen Habits, a Top 25 blog (according to TIME magazine) with 260,000 subscribers, mnmlist.com, and the best-selling books focus, The Power of Less, and Zen To Done.
Babauta is a former journalist of 18 years, a husband, father of six children, and in 2010 moved from Guam to San Francisco, where he leads a simple life.
He started Zen Habits to chronicle and share what he's learned while changing a number of habits.
It is kind of repetitive, because many chapters are on a particular habit or type of habit. Even so, I found the book has excellent advice on how to build good habits and let go of bad habits. It does not give a rapidly progressing silver bullet, but then that sort of habit formation never did work for me either. One of the most important messages for me was to be patient and work on one thing at a time. It is better to gain one habit than it is to try for 5 of them and end up frustrated with nothing. I liked his gentle approach. The only thing I felt was not for me was his emphasis on seeking out others for support. I believe that some people find that is not helpful. That seems true for me regarding habit building, but I could be wrong.
The first half of the book is where I stopped because this how-to guide starts with the basics and warns Do Not Advance Until You Have Had Some Success with the First Steps. I keep it to saved to my desktop for easier reference.
I give The Habit Guide four stars. I applied two of its tips right away and my new habit of studying is improving.
As of this writing, you can buy this ebook online for about $6. I recommend it to anyone who has tried and failed to chage their life.
