H. R. Giger's Biomechanics Limited Edition

Rate this book
H. R. Giger, Oscar-winning designer of the hit movie Alien and widely considered the world’s finest dark fantasy artist, redefined edgy, contemporary art starting in the 1980s with his biomorphic creatures inhabiting gorgeously grim dystopias. His visionary art is unmistakable. Unfettered by labels or category, Giger’s work has appeared in every conceivable format — from set design to sculpture, paintings to airbrush, book covers to album covers. This massive, oversized volume, limited to just 300 copies worldwide, showcases 200 of Giger's paintings and sculptures, including design paintings for Emerson, Lake and Palmer albums, and the film Poltergeist II. The book is bound in black leather, with a black cloth slipcase — all embossed in gold foil. It includes a signed and numbered print of one of Giger’s drawings, which can be removed and framed. The foreword by longtime Giger fan Harlan Ellison, who calls him “our latter-day Hieronymus Bosch,” adds welcome context and insight.

This book actually changed the course of my life, odd as that may sound. Since my discovery of this book in a Barnes & Noble when I was 12, Giger determined my course as an artist and lover of the arts. Oddly enough this determined my path as a reader too, since Giger turned me onto Lovevecraft, who turned me onto Dunsany, Clark Ashton Smith, Howard, etc.

Compared to Giger's other coffee table books (Necronomicon 1 & 2), this one has a kind of odd division between the 60s ink works and the later airbrush art. The 60s inks are breathtaking stuff and that's really what grabbed my attention about this book. The airbrush stuff is arresting to one seeing Giger's art for the first time, but it pales a little after one sees his 70s airbrush murals.

H.R. Giger's art was a profound thing and this book is a great example.

OH. MY. GAWD!!! WOO! As you may or not know, I have been sorting through boxes of books that have been collected by me and fam over the last decade or two, and I am desperately trying to thin the collection. I come across THIS HUGE BEAST of a book. oof... Grumble... how am I gonna fit this in mah library...complain... it's so big... moan. So, after all that, I looks it up after looking and reading it a bit; it's huge, got it's own case and everything. I like Giger and his work, I love Alien.
But, this is what I find...

I think I may have a limited edition book! I guess I have to take it to a bookstore and find out more, but needless to say, looking and reading this has been a priceless gem! WOO!

I was wondering what you guys would do and what you thought that it should be worth!?!!

While the drawings were intriguing and fascinating, and the various articles interesting, the rest of the written information was extremely poorly written. However, even through the poorly written parts, there was insight into Giger's feelings and life.
