Robert Thier

Robert Thier is a German historian, lover of old books and award-winning writer, whose novels and stories encompass the historical, satirical, and fantastical. For the way he manages to make the past come alive, as if he himself lived as a medieval knight, his inventive fans have given him the nickname “Sir Rob.” All of his stories are characterized by his very own brand of humor that has gained him a diverse readership ranging from teenagers to retired grandmothers.

For Robert, becoming a writer followed naturally from his interest in history. “In Germany,” he says, “we use the same word for story and history. And I've always loved the one as much as the other. Becoming a storyteller, a writer, is what I've always wanted.”

Besides writing and researching in dusty old archives, on the lookout for a mystery to put into his next story, Robert enjoys classical music and long walks in the country. The helmet you see in the picture he does not wear because he is a cycling enthusiast, but to protect his literary skull in which a bone has been missing from birth. Robert lives in the south of Germany in a small village between the three Emperor Mountains.

These stories are very self-aware; they know that fairy tale narratives can become dated and trite, so they make fun of them. They joke around and give them a slightly modern twist. Up to date themes are added into the stories, things like recognitions of abortion and homosexuality. It’s almost like how a fairy tale could look if it was written today for the first time.

Underlining this though is a return to the most traditional of fairy tales. Not the sort that Disney reworked and the Brothers Grimm (amongst others) rewrote, the ones that have grown stale, but the real traditional ones. The ones full of blood and violence, the ones that don’t necessarily have a nice happy ending. There’s no idealised sense of happiness or a triumph of good over evil, but a moral lesson or a maxim as it were. Most of the stories end with a reckoning or misfortune for someone, and at the end the maxim is given as a whimsical life lesson for the reader.

And some of them were terribly funny, well most really. Each story, though unique in its own way, follows this trend. Humour of this sort can often feel forced into a story- I know I’ve tried writing stuff like this myself in the past- however, with this it felt natural. It doesn’t feel like the author has tried too hard; it’s just come out of the writing. This is all we can ask for, a selection of stories that don’t take themselves too seriously; it’s all good fun, definitely a much needed break from seriousness and a much needed laugh.

I’d recommend these if you’re looking for a quick entertaining read, though by the looks of things I do think his full novels may be more enjoyable.

*3.75 HILARIOUS STARS*

Received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This usually isn't the type of book I read, but I thought "oh hell, why not, let's give it a shot", so I jumped at the opportunity and I don't have any regrets! Robert Thier had me rolling on the floor laughing by the third line of page 1 and I didn't stop until I reached the last page. His humor is just right up my alley!

This book contains various very short retellings of some well-know and also some lesser-known fairytales, but with some crazy twists and turns! I'd definitely advise people not to read these stories to their kids though, as they do contain some explicit and less child-friendly situations like witches eating children's body parts and that sort of stuff. But for me these were awesome and really refreshing! Every short story started with your typical 'once upon a time' and ended with a short and hilarious 'moral of the story'.

My favorite was definitely the last fairy tale called The Little Typo's Tale which is, as I understood it, an original story and not a retelling. It was the most creative out of the bunch and I simply loved it! I secretly wish more of these were included in the book.
A lot of famous fairytales are being retold, from Snow White to The Little Mermaid and also some I didn't recognize but still enjoyed nonetheless. There were also a lot of subtle references to other fairy tales and one fairy tale in particular even used part of Martin Luther King's famous speech, so I'm definitely impressed with Robert Thier's imagination!

I'd definitely recommend this to people who are in the mood for a quick read or just some really short stories, or people who feel the need to have a good laugh!

This collection of re-imagined fairy tales is at once hilarious & charming!

It's a wonderful selection of adult-themed twists on our favorite stories. Polite princesses are savage and sassy, evil stepmothers are shunned, and devils are protagonists!

Thier's wit is strong in these stories. He has a unique way of retelling them that kept me interested and giggling to myself while I read.

However, this isn't a book that I would pick up of my own accord. I think this collection does exactly what it sets out to do, it achieves the laughs! But it isn't something I would seek out & I can't see myself rereading it.

There were a couple places where a stories dragged on a little longer than necessary, but for the most part I was engaged.

This is something I would recommend for people who love retellings and have a Progressive attitude when it comes to politics! As it stands, I enjoyed my time in Thier's versions of these fairy tales & I'm ultimately glad I read it.

Special thank you to Robert Thier for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

First, thanks to Robert Thier for the copy. Now, if I can just write an honest review....I think I can

I'm a bit whimsical about my fairy tales. I just can't grow up; I'm like a lost boy. I will read princess stories and nursery rhymes to myself; I don't need my toddler nieces around me for an excuse. Having said that, I jumped at the chance to read these twists of traditional tales.

The book approaches some basic tenets of childhood: self-esteem, sibling affection, obedience, etc. Then it brings in the evil queens and stepmothers, the child-eating witches, the Prince Charmings. We have wells and castles, forests and seas, so all of the elements are present. Then the tricks start.

Coal Black was obviously a take on my favorite, Snow White, and I loved it. Coal Black was a mighty force against evil. A few more tales in a fairy biblical twist to the Ham, son of Noah, myth is a surprise, a bit shocking to read, but I think I understand Thier's point. But my mind was blown when I learned that this was an ACTUAL fairy tale that he modernized. This was a new one for me. Then Thier adds an original called "The Little Typo's Tale", which was a reminder to me of how I can no longer spell any more because I depend so much on autocorrect. Damn you, autocorrect!

All in all, this was a very clever, entertaining collection. 3.5-4 strong stars no doubt
So glad I read this!

Thier makes a valid argument in his afterword for fairy tales. These were not initially meant for children. They were horribly violent, incestuous, evil stories with political or social mores. If after you have read this book, you're looking for more, check out Grimm's Grimmest.

WARNING! Fairy Tales by Robert Thier is a collection of the weirdest fairy tales you will ever hear! They are funny and crazy but very interesting. There might be one story I might rate a 3 but all the others 4-5 stars. Very creative and clever and odd in a good way! This book is NOT boring. A good fun read. I was given this book to read and under no obligation for a review.

HERE DO I EVEN BEGIN TO DESCRIBE THE BRILLIANT AWESOMENESS OF THIS BOOKS?! OH GOD WHERE!
This is a short fairytale story collection, and I tell you this now, do NOT read this to your kid in bed! Or to your little niece or nephew who is just learning to talk, or as a revenge on your younger sibling! Unless you want the poor child mentally scarred from the story lines (in the case of a sibling, I know you want just that!), two cracked ribs because of laughing too much, and a vow to never whine about wanting to listen to a story before bedtime! That's why there is a Disclaimer put in already! You smart you Mr.Author! ;)
This is the kind of book, that you would be friends with, and your mom would never approve (Sorry Johnny I can’t be your friend. My mamma says you lie, eat too much sugar and are a bad influence!)
Despite it's cover, it's a collection of light, heart, funny, dark stories that you can read over and over and the magic is never lost! There have been a lot of versions to the re-telling of various fairy tales, and I would say this is the one I love best! As you all know, fairy tales and Hollywood remakes have the habit of romanticizing everything wrong in a fairytale…
You need a prince charming to be happy and change your life.
When cursed, the darker you are, the uglier you are.
Stepmothers are forever evil.
You must be incredibly feminine with a tiny waist and long beautiful hair and glowing skin.
You need a man in your life.
I could go on and on……

But this collection of stories, subtly gave a middle finger to all of them above! Despite all the stories taking place in a fantasy setting, most still have modern themes and issues. And it is exactly what our generation needs!
To highlight a few things, so that you get my point….

In The Fishy Little Mermaid, the prince has a fetish towards mermaids, whose father was bisexual! And this story brought to light, how ridiculous it is, to be infatuated with someone so quick.

In Crunchy brats, I love the mention of the witches gobbling down a teen drug addict as desert. The perfect warning for everyone to stay away from drugs. (especially if you don’t wish to land up on the menu of Crunchy Brats! Robert Thier has a few of their secret recipies! ;)

One of the stories, The Enchanted Prince and the Enchanting Girl, which was inspired by “The Singing Springing Lark by Grimm Brothers” whose heroine is said to have depicted “unusual courage” who are forced to an animal groom, because she keeps her word, unlike the usual pattern for fathers having to plead them to. I call this bull! In Robert’s re telling, the father deceives the daughter! Plus it has a much better ending! ;)

My most favourite one would have to be Coal Black and the Seven Dwarves. This is not just a re-telling of Snow White, it’s magic! This story breaks away all barriers and tradition of fairy tales having overly feminine princesses and re defines the usual standards of beauty. To start with the female lead sports a beard (a fake one!), has skin as dark as coal, carries an axe with her, and is amazing at killing! (tunnel rats and goblins…) But despite all that, according to an incredibly sassy magic mirror, she is still considered to be the fairest in the land. (the beauty kind of fair I mean...not the referee is fair one! ;)
She is not the naive kind who is likely to fall in the trap of eating poisonous apples (did Snow White seriously do that?!) and is way better at leading a dwarf army, and dealing with hangovers! Three Cheers to Coal Black for her badassness!

And the last one I shall review here, is “The White Bride and the Black Pride” which just gives a goddamn kick in the hind quarters to every stupid racist out there! I would say this story is by far the most inspiring and most amazing! It deserves a prize for writing in the best bitch slap to a racist, in history! It warmed my heart, that the female lead in the story was still super confident, sassy and bad ass, despite the people around her telling her that she was “ugly” because she was black skinned, because of a curse. This is the first time, a female just punches down every barrier that people have towards judging others because of the skin colour of a person! I thank Sir Rob from the bottom of my heart for creating this dark skinned character who I can relate to! :)

In conclusion, this is the kind of book you come back to reading when you're feeling low on a bad day, and it's guaranteed that it will lift your spirits! I can bet you Sir Robs helmet on that! ;)
This is the kind of book, in whose stories you wouldn't mind getting lost into!
This is the kind of book, which has as an amazing change from the usual pinky-princesses-sparkly-unicorns-chauvinistic-princes fairy tales, with puke worthy "happy forever afters"!
I would sell my soul to read this book over and over! Don't worry, I won't sell it for $3.99 but actually $9.99 because that's how much this book costs on Amazon! ;)
As for the quality of the paperback I received, it was simply superb! From the fact that it doesn't crease fast to the amazing quality of the paper! Cheers to the author and publisher! Thank you to Amazon for delivering it super fast! And my apologies to the delivery guy, because I almost shoved the money up his nose in a hurry to get the book! :)

Again, I bow down to my most favourite writer, for once more giving me a chance to read all the wonderful stories in all amazing styles! You never fail to amaze me, with your literary scribbles!
Looking forward to many of your books gracing my bookshelf for years to come! :)

Mijn favoriet was absoluut Coal Black and the seven Dwarves, een retelling van Sneeuwwitje. Maar ook Golden Girl and Firebreath vond ik fantastisch!

"He even contemplated suicide, only there was that pesky problem of immortality." -Tails of Sins

"She grabbed the handsome prince by the collar, dragged him into bed, and did wild, wicked things with him that can't be discussed here because this is a fairy tale for all ages." -The enchanted Prince and the enchanting Girl

Coming from one of the biggest fans of Sir Rob, this book was a real treasure. Sir Rob In all his glory sits and writes down all his books and keep creating excellent work one after another.
A book containing some amazing recreations of the fairy tales we grew up listening to, was thoroughly entertaining. So much humor and surprising elements were inserted with some impeccable timing, totally loved it. How could someone be so praise-worthy? I don't know how this person has so much talent in him to keep writing all these wonderful books.
Can't wait to read rest of his books and would like to do anything to support a writing career for this marvelous human as I am not yet done reading his work. Would like to continue doing so for a much longer period time.

This book was amazing and I absolutely enjoyed this book. This book incorporated all of my childhood into one realistic life book. The fantasy, suspense, and sarcasm was hilariously wonderful. I really enjoyed this books ability to balance real-world situations between fairytale ones. These fairy tale twists brought excitement to the comfy couch. I really could have enjoyed this story more if . . . there more stories. The biggest appeal for me in this story was its creativity. This book rewrites the tale that you have to have the perfect prince to be happy and to be liked you have to be thin and pretty. All in all, you can't lose the magic with this story and on any bad day, this is the story to read.

While this short story collection definitely got more than a few laughs out of me, a lot of the stories felt too similar to me. They had the same tone, told similar jokes, and usually left the same impression on me. This was an enjoyable read, but I wish the author had taken more risks and really thought outside the box. I do appreciate the variety of fairy tales he took inspiration from though. It's always nice to see some lesser known tales getting their chance to shine.

Overall, this collection of short stories is amusing yet safe and rather repetitive.

This book was, in all aspects, hilarious! It both twisted the old tales we were told as children into darker stories, deepening the plot whilst adding a modern touch to them, bringing in things that weren't discussed in regular fairy tales. Robert Thier is a true genius, and, in my opinion as well as many others of his readers, deserves a true knighting!

A modern, unsanitized, politically correct retelling of a selection of fairy tales. Some of the stories were entertaining and amusing, some just fell flat. This is NOT a children's book.

This was an interesting read. If you enjoy the humor of Percy Jackson or the writing style of A Tale Dark and Grimm, then you will surely enjoy this one. WARNING Fairy t
Tales is more than just retellings of your classic fairy tales. In fact, I don't believe thus could be considered a retelling at all. It is filled with random, humorous, orginal stories. If you would like to relax and read something to kill time and simply have fun, then you should give this story a shot.

2017 Review:
Not since The Princess Bride has a modern fairy tale kept me so entertained. This anthology of stories caters to my love of dark humor, puts a modern twist on the tales we know and love – which adds a surprising amount of humor –, and tells authentic fairy tales reminiscent of the Brothers Grimm. A few stories like "The Fishy Little Mermaid", "The Enchanted Prince and the Enchanting Princess", and "Golden Girl and Fire Breath" are retellings, but Rob Thier also creates his own tales inspired by his own culture (adapting a style called Teufels Märchen or "Devil Fairy Tale") and uses the literary Rule of Three, methods of writing that I've never heard of before reading this.
Snow White was already one of my favorite Grimm fairy tales, but "Coal Black and the Seven Dwarves" made me love it even more. The retelling was dark and gritty like the original – possibly even darker –, but still funny and put a fresh spin on the tale. "Tails of Sins" was my least favorite. I still enjoyed it, but I was a bit put off by the fact that the story actually made me sympathize with the Devil. Nonetheless, I was left happy and entertained by the end of each chapter.

3.5* of crazy tales

This is a wickedly funny, quirky return to the origins of fairy takes, well away from their Disney-fied saccharine sweet happy ever after..
Here the wicked witch often wins out and the handsome Prince ends up served for supper.

There's a nod to the Brothers Grimm, a tip of the hat to Charles Perrault and a guest appearance by William Shakespeare which makes this an altogether truly amusing collection.

# In the interest of fairness, I received a copy of this from the author in return for an unbiased opinion.
