Based on the kinetic sculptures of Lisa Snellings, STRANGE ATTRACTION is a carnival ride of dark fantasy and horror. These 24 tales and poems explore the night-side of the looming Ferris wheel and its many inhabitants. But things aren't always what they seem on this ride and surprises await all who stand in line, waiting to experience the wheel for themselves. The ride is open. Admit one.
This is one of those anthologies that fails more than it succeeds. The majority of the stories are average or worse, and the connections to the sculptures they are based on seem forced.
Curiously, Lisa Snellings-Clark's own story is one of the best of the book, and she would have been better off making a book entirely of her own writing than what was produced here. There are obvious exceptions from the more well-known authors, but I guess their higher quality work is what sets them apart.
The reason this got two stars is not the writing. The writers in this volume are excellent writers - I've met many of them, in fact. However, as a whole, the book was a slog to get through. It didn't feel very coherent, even though the stories by themselves were not bad, and even though there was a definite theme.
It just felt heavy, and cumbersome, and was not a joy to get through.
This collection is pretty damn amazing. Of course some stories were weaker than others. But overall I really enjoyed the entire theme and the authors within
