No one says no to fiery but talented home designer Neve Harper—which is how she convinces her elusive neighbor, Duke Kennicot, to help out with her latest renovation job. Not only is Duke a design aficionado, he’s got the inside scoop on the cabin’s owner. And since Neve’s ulterior motive is a romance with the boss, Duke is her ideal wingman. Except from the moment they’re alone in the remote Ozark mountain location, Neve discovers Duke is just as headstrong—and a whole lot sexier—than she ever realized. Duke has always made it clear she’s not his type. Yet the simmering tension between them says otherwise….

Duke had been warned to steer clear of hot-tempered Neve, but his resolve is lessening with every heated exchange—and every smoldering touch. By the time Neve unearths a dangerous, age-old mystery buried on the property, Duke is ready to do just about anything to keep the brazen beauty safe….

To the studs wasn't my cup of tea. If I want to read a book where the hero pretends to be gay I would go for Clam Jam. The heroine is the kind of person who chews and spits people. In my opinion she is the kind of character whom you will either love or hate. It's a hit or miss. For me it was a miss. I can't say that I liked her or at least relate to her on some level. The hero wasn't able to make me like him despite his deception. I didn't feel sympathetic towards him. After a while I stopped trying to understand the characters and the plot and I just read the book in order to be able to write a review for it. I must have missed something because close to the end a crazy person appeared and tried to prevent the revelation of a long kept secret. It felt out of place for me. The book sounded promising but in the end it didn't work for me. I will not be recommending it, but if you decide to read, I hope you will enjoy it.

Neve was blunt and I fell in love with her, she didn't take crap from anyone, with her what you see is what you get, and she has no problem putting her two cents in, "Neve patted the top of Hannah’s head and moved to stand beside Duke in a show of support. Then, she drove the final nail. “Don’t be so kind, Duke. Take her to court regardless. Not only will you be reimbursed financially, I bet you can get custody of the last litter as well. Judges are kind of like cops in that they hate being lied to. They especially hate when people find loopholes in their judgments.” I really loved this book, Duke had no idea what hit him where Neve was concerned.

This is a solid 3 - 3.5* read for me. I plan on following the series, as it held my interest, but I did take some time to get engaged with the story.

I love diy, design etc., romance and a good mystery, so on the whole this was a good fit. I just had a real problem connecting with Neve in any way whatsoever. I get being short, living in a male dominated world etc. but she was truly nasty, and by all accounts even Duke who was attracted to her found her to be shrew-like - I think this was due to her attitude more than looks, but it did not endear her to me at all. And so I did struggle to care about her snagging Duke, who sounded pretty perfect. I read on though, prepared to understand the background to her snarkiness. And to see how she could be redeemed enough in my eyes to deserve Duke!

I can't spoil the story for you, but it didn't pan out how I expected, but I enjoyed the read. There was some humour there, and definitely some questionable judgement calls which were entertaining. Curiously mixed feelings, but glad I read it.

This had all the potential for me to hate this novel, and yet I really liked it.

Neve Harper is a brilliant home designer. Unfortunately she has had to fight her way through misogyny and condescension and prove herself over and over again. As a result she has become hard and frankly a bit spiteful, she has no time for weakness, she won't help other women succeed and she believes that telling the whole unvarnished truth is a virtue. Neve dates younger men and chews them up and spits them out, she feels nothing but contempt for the niceties of human interactions (like being polite to wait staff). Neve goes too far, loses a job and her team defect to work for her assistant.

Neve's neighbour is Duke Kennicot. Neve and Duke are friends, she finds him attractive but Duke has told her that he is gay - obviously he isn't. This could have been offensive but Duke's reasons are explained and I could kind of understand it. Also Duke doesn't try to behave any differently, and it is kind of funny to see a big heterosexual guy trying to work out whether he ought to notice other guys, or make comments on their hotness etc. When Neve comes to visit Duke at his office she is mesmerised by his boss, Gavin Chambers, shouting at a young man. She decides that Gavin is just the sort of man she should be with - not afraid to show his feelings.

Duke suggests that Neve refurbish Gavin's cabin in the woods - that will give her and Gavin plenty of opportunities to meet and discuss progress. Except Gavin wants Duke to do the refurb.

Soon Neve and Duke are sharing a caravan in the woods, meeting slightly creepy neighbours, fostering loves young dream, investigating a mysterious box and bickering like an old married couple.

There is so much going on in this novel. Love triangles, heck, love quadrangles. Mysteries. Murders. Secret pasts. DIY.

If you've ever agreed to do something out of your comfort zone just to get a guy to notice you. If you've ever been deeply hurt by other people. If you've ever tackled a DIY project on no budget and high hopes. This is the novel for you.

I received a free copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

This book had a lot of potential, but it just fell short in the end for me. I really liked Neve even though she drove me crazy at the same time. I like that she isn't willing to allow people to walk over her and will stand her ground, but I also felt like this was her protection because the more we get to know her, the more we see she isn't really that prickly.

There were some twists and turns that I didn't see coming and at one point I was simply disappointed in the behavior of one of the main characters, but that character tried to redeem themself a bit.

At times the reno work was a bit teadious since there were quite a few details (down to some very small ones) but I have to give props for the author getting so deep into the background story even if it did take away from the actual plot at times.

I have to say the surprises were what made the book to me. The writing was fairly well done and I would be willing to read more from this author.

"If a granite wall were a person, that'd be Neve. Hard, unyielding, bossy, angry"

Neve is a maneater. A woman who pulls no punches, is honest to a fault and despises liars. She may be a bit harsh in her delivery of the truth and has little patience for any BS.

Duke is her neighbor, who was told when he moved in next to her he should stay far away from Neve and her snarky personality and relationship issues. So he told her he was gay.

Neve and Duke have a tentative friendship, that turns to a working relationship, that has them spending a lot of time together... and soon the truth comes out.

I enjoyed this book, Neve is a tough character who doesn't apologize for who she is. Duke is a nice guy who has been hurt in the past so he is blinded by what he really feels for Neve. Add in a cabin renovation, some fun supporting characters and a mystery, this was a fun read. I received a complimentary copy of this book book for my fair and unbiased review.

**I received an ARC of this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review**

I’m going to ease my way into this one by starting with the cover. I have issue with a cover that looks NOTHING like the characters are described. Where is the long flowing hair and braided beard on Duke? This is not the case of the reader’s vision being different from the authors. Duke’s hair and beard are mentioned often throughout the book. Or course, this is most likely a publisher issue and not the author’s fault.

In the blurb about this book, the heroine Neve is described as fiery and hot-tempered. I guess it could be said she’s hot-tempered, but not fiery. She’s just a bitch, plain and simple. Neve constantly tells herself and others that she is just truthful and tells it like it is, yet she mocks people and enjoys the reactions she gets when they take offense. It’s very briefly mentioned that she had to fight tooth and nail to overcome the misogyny and stereotyping she ran into as she worked her way up in her profession. Not enough information was given to warrant the way she treated people. Instead of tearing into her assistant, she could have mentored her to help her achieve that boldness she claimed she would admire. I waited and waited for the author to give Neve some trait that would endear her to me, but it never happened. I’m all for a strong female lead. To me strong does not equal mean.

Duke is a likable hero in many ways, but the fact that he told Neve he was gay in order to keep some sort of distance between them struck me as icky. It really didn’t make a lot of sense to me in this day and age. The blurb describes Duke as headstrong. Again, I have to disagree with that description. Although he stood up to Neve more than most people, he still let her walk all over him and talk over him so he couldn’t get a word in edgewise. Plus, at the beginning when they’re still home he thinks about how easily he’d give into Neve if she came onto him. All of the sudden, once they’re in the Ozarks, he’s thinking about how she’s not even attractive and her “little boobs” are referenced a LOT. I don’t feel he was really a well fleshed out character.

I was more than halfway through the story before Neve was no longer hated by me. I didn’t necessarily like her, but I no longer despised her. I honestly can’t say if that was because I got used to her being so mean or if she had calmed down a bit. Because of my feelings about Neve, it was hard for this story to hold my interest. Once I got to this point where I no longer hated her I was able to get into the story a bit more.

There is a bit of a mystery story within this story. A strange box found on the work site, somewhat creepy neighbors, no cell phone reception, woods. Honestly, that held my interest more than anything else.

I’m not sure if I’ll read any more of this author’s work. If this had been her first book I would have chalked it up to her getting her feet wet. Maybe that’s still what it is since she doesn’t have but a handful of books published. I love a faux romance story so her book Men Like This sounds interesting so I may give her another try.

Neve Harper is one of the strongest characters I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know. Outspoken and self-assured, she knows what she wants and has no hesitation or doubts about how to go about getting it. What she wants, after her last boy-toy, is a fling with her best friend’s boss.
Duke is not what he appears to be. After being warned about Neve’s chew ‘em up and spit ‘em out tendency, he devises a plan to prevent Neve from starting something he couldn’t resist.
When his boss finagles Duke into renovating a cabin with Neve, they discover a simmering tension that won’t be ignored. Neve’s penchant for finding trouble flares in a big way and incites Duke’s protective instinct.
When I first started this book, I found it a little difficult to connect with Neve. Besides being strong-willed, she has a bit of a mean streak. Duke, on the other hand, was a character that drew me along page to page.
Each character was very well defined and the book is very well written. The author definitely has a knack for keeping you interested. I loved that there were enough twists to keep you guessing and the interactions between Neve and Duke sizzled. Well done.

Oh my that was interesting. It took a while to understand that this was a drama/mystery/love story but loved every minute. Roxanne you saved the best for last in the case of finding what the box meant and bringing together Duke and Neve. They definitely are opposites and that makes them work because they will bring out what each doesn't have. Great job in putting together this story with a bit of everything, I thought this was gonna be two people drawn together in an unusual way but you threw a mystery in there to actually tie the two together and realize their feelings for each other. A must read, flows with intrigue can't go wrong. You'll love to hate Neve but you'll root for Duke even though......

For me the fun, mystery, excitement all began at the cabin. Cool, interesting, and intriguing characters. Neve was the “I got this.” Kind of woman. She was working in a world that she was for the most part looked down on. She had to work harder and smarter to get ahead and work just that much hard to stay ahead. She was strong and bitch. She had a bite that was not pleasant but understandable. She had very little give. She stood her ground.

Duke was the hot guy next door. I cannot pinpoint just a few specifics about him. He was headstrong to be sure but he knew who he was and his purpose. He did however have issues with figuring out Neve. This was the intrigue for him.

I found supporting characters that I would just love to know more about and will be following this series. To see where it all goes from here.

Entertaining romance story with a dash of mystery, and I liked the whole forced proximity scenario. Neve and Duke are working together to renovate a cabin in the woods; there’s a bit of a surprise there when the chemistry between them leans towards the romantic side of things. Neve is okay; I like her sass, but it boarders on too much at times, so she can be annoying. Duke is okay as well; not a fan that Duke let Neve believe things that weren’t true, but he does have some sweet moments. Good banter between the two. I’m going with a 3 rating for this one; I liked it.

Neve Harper believes that her neighbor, Duke Kennicot, is attracted to men and he hasn't bothered to tell her otherwise. So, when Neve sets her sights on Duke's boss instead, Duke is willing to help her by becoming her partner in renovating the man's cabin in the Ozark mountains. Except what starts off as Duke offering his help, turns into so much more, especially when secrets come to light that could hurt the friendship they've built. Can Neve forgive Duke so they can have a shot at happy ever after, or will they lose the one person that's come to mean so much to them?

When I started reading this book, I didn't like the heroine. She was too direct and too harsh in the way she spoke to people, and she really annoyed me. But the more I read, the more she began to win me over, even if she was too honest at times and tactless in her delivery of getting her point across. However, in saying that, she has good reason to be the way she is. She's been lied to too many times to give anyone a chance and I could understand why she doesn't let anyone get too close.

As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories, the obstacles they face on their journey to happy ever after and what happens at the end to one of the main characters. There are secrets that someone is desperate to keep hidden. Will Neve and Duke learn the secrets before it's too late? However, there was also some really good banter between the hero and heroine that I loved. Duke doesn't allow Neve to get away with everything she says to him and isn't afraid to call her out on things if she goes too far, which she does when she embarrasses Duke's boss. Also, I liked that the hero finally stood up to his ex-wife and didn't allow her to get away with what she was doing anymore. I felt sorry for the dog as well as the hero and I liked that Neve helped him deal with his ex, because the woman was taking advantage of Duke when she didn't have the right to.

Overall, I did really end up enjoying this story, encompassing a wonderful hero that deserved a second chance at love; a heroine with plenty of passion for her career that needs someone in her life to love her unconditionally, no matter how insensitive she could be; and which had a fast-paced plot that ended really well, despite what happened to one of the main characters. But what I liked the most is how Neve realized she was in the wrong and made things right with those she needed to. Moreover, I liked how things turned out for her and Duke, especially once she learned the truth about his gender preference when it came to relationships. Certainly, their growing relationship hits a few snags when she learned the truth, but I'm glad they could overcome the obstacles they faced to get their chance at forever love. I would recommend To the Studs by Roxanne Smith, if you enjoy a story where the hero and heroine have great chemistry because of their banter.

I want to say Neve is my kind of girl. I liked her personality except that she didn't seem...nice. She seemed bitter at times which made me wonder if she had a backstory to explain that. I get that she was dealing with "being a woman in a man's world" and misogyny and such...
She was definitely comfortable in her own skin, which I liked. You get to a certain age when you begin to think, "take me as I am". You don't care nearly as much about what people think of you. That's Neve. Plus, she is opinionated and will tell you what she thinks even if you didn't ask for her opinion. She is the kind of woman I would have sympathy for but would have a hard time being friends with. Congeniality doesn't seem to be one of her many traits.
Although this was romance I appreciated that there was a story-line aside from romance. And, the author did pull me into this story so I will be following this series :)

Josie's Review 3.5 Stars

I have mixed feelings about this story. I enjoyed some aspects of this book but there are some that I didn’t. I’ve never read a book from this author before so I’m not familiar with her writing style. I love a good mystery romance and and I’m always up for some humor in a book, but I felt like I had a hard time really connecting with and becoming completely emerged within the story and the characters.

Neve and Duke are working together to restore a cabin and each bring special knowledge on this project. Neve is a strong character and somewhat cold, I just couldn’t connect with her. I understand why the author made her this strong, working in a male dominant world could make a woman tough, however she was so tough that I needed to see that soft and endearing side to her. Duke was a mystery to me as well. I just couldn’t really figure him out but if I had to say which character I liked best it would be him.

Neve and Duke’s banter was the highlight for me in this book. Their exchanges were out right funny and entertaining. There was a lot of inner dialogue in the story and it took a while for the story to pick up. I found that I skimmed through parts just so I could get more of their banter and interaction. The added mystery is this book was also a highlight when things slowly came into play. I found myself loving those parts so much more than Duke and Neve’s time together. This was not a heavy read and for me the focus was more on the mystery of the book than on the couple. So if you are looking for a good mystery book with a slight romance , this would be your book. The mystery part and banter was captivating and enjoyable.

ARC Review: To The Studs (Bound By Design) by Roxanne Smith

She's head strong and high maintenance. He's talented and moody. Mixing business with pleasure never ends well. So why does Neve find herself in a danger of losing more than her heart to the one man that makes her blood boil in a totally inappropriate way? Roxanne Smith packed To the Studs full of unbelievable twists that added drama to the plot line but took away from the romance. I love a bit of mystery but not when it detracts from the story instead of enhancing it. The antics of the main characters were hilarious and made for some fun moments, but I could have done with out the suspense angle.
