From best-selling author Holly Webb comes a heart-warming winter tale just in time for Christmas. Bel feels apprehensive about spending the lead-up to Christmas with her grandma at Lamont House, a sheltered housing complex converted from a grand Victorian home. The mansion is beautiful, but eerie, too with its moving shadows and odd noises. One night, Bel is sure she sees a cat wandering across the grounds, even though there are no pets allowed. She follows its footprints through the snow and is transported into the past. Here, she discovers Charlotte, a Victorian girl her own age. Charlotte's little sister, Sara, is very ill. Charlotte has been searching for Sara's cat, Snow. She hopes the reunion with her pet might make Sara better. Bel is desperate to help find Snow, but the cat is nowhere to be found, and time is running out...
Holly Webb is one of Britain's best-loved children's writers. She has written over a hundred books for children, and her work has been translated into over thirty languages. Holly lives in Tilehurst, just outside of Reading, Berkshire, with her husband, three children and several cats.
4 stars for The Snow Cat, my first Holly Webb book.
I expected this to be a cute Christmas-y story about a girl and a cat, but oh boy... Instead I received an eerie at times book, with the theme of facing your fears and courage.
Our protagonist, Bel, needs to stay with her grandma for a few days, but she feels inconfortable there. Until one morning after it snowed, she sees a white cat outside and goes chasing her, until she gets in another place.
I was terrified by the beast, Jack, the big black dog. I felt like I was there. But eventually this turned out really peaceful and nice.
The illustrations are also beautiful! <3
Now I'm curious to read the other books in this series, as well. Hope I'll find them in a book shop somewhere. :)
(3.5) My second from Holly Webb, and while I enjoyed it a lot, if not quite as much as Frost, I probably don’t need to read any more by her now because these two were so similar as to reveal a clear formula: a young girl of about nine years old who plays alone (because she’s an only child or left out of her siblings’ games) goes for an outdoor adventure and meets a cute animal who leads her back into the past. For a time it’s unclear whether she’s dreaming or really experiencing the history, but at the end there’s some physical token that proves she has been time travelling.
In this case, Bel goes to play in the snowy garden of her grandmother’s retirement complex and meets a white cat named Snow who belongs to Charlotte, the daughter of the family who owned this manor house 150 years ago. Bel has to protect Snow from a threatening dog so the cat can be brought in to visit Charlotte’s sister Lucy, who lies ill with influenza. For me the Victorian setting wasn’t quite as authentic or interesting as the seventeenth-century frost fair was in Frost, but I can see how it’s a good way of introducing kids to what was different in the past: everything from clothing and speech to the severity of illness.
A nice book, but as an adult I see that the plot is super simple. And as I understood it some things don’t make much sense, especially the cat adventure.
I Bought This For My Daughter At Christmas 2016, Always With The Intention To Read It Myself. What A Beautiful Story, With Many Layers. I Loved How Snow (The Cat) Was Such A Wise Character. I Think, As A Young Girl, We All Fantasise About Something Like This Happening.
