You Sent Me A Letter

Rate this book
At 2 am on the morning of her fortieth birthday, Sophie wakes in the darkness of her bedroom and finds a stranger watching her from the foot of the bed. The intruder hands Sophie a letter and issues an ultimatum: the message is to be opened at her forthcoming party, in front of family and friends, at exactly 8 pm. Any failure to comply will not end well. Sophie can only think of one person who hates her enough to have hired a professional to menace her like this: her fiancé's ex-wife.

What can the letter possibly contain? And why must it be read in front of everyone she loves? This will be no ordinary fortieth party.

Sophie is not the only person holding a secret about the evening ahead. When the clock strikes eight, the course of several people's lives will be altered forever.

Sophie wakes up in the early hours of the morning to find a man standing over her bed. She is given and envelope and is instructed that she must open it at 8pm tonight at her 40th birthday in front of family and friends. I have to say I just loved this book, it is definitely high on the list of what I have already read this year. An amazing opening that sets the pace of the book for a fantastic psychological thriller. This is not a predictable story, you have no idea at times where it is going but all you know is that you do not want to put it down and you really, really want to find out what will happen.
I am not going to say anymore as I do not want to give any parts of the plot away, just make sure you read this book. Thoroughly enjoyable.

I know I’m a dissenting voice here, but I honestly thought this was pretty awful.

Sophie is woken in the night by a masked man who gives her a letter, he tells her she must open it in front of all the guests assembled at her 40th birthday the next night, if she doesn’t, he will hurt her and her family.

What does Sophie do? Does she call the police? Try to figure out who she may have wronged to deserve this letter (apart from her fiancé’s apparently crazy ex wife)? Does she OPEN THE BLOODY LETTER in private to try and head off what’s coming? No, no she doesn’t. Instead we are treated to a farcical race through time, something akin to the lovechild of Inspector Clouseau and Basil Fawlty.

I have some fairly strong opinions about the books ending,

All in all, a really disappointing read. If I want to follow a journey of disastrous buffoonery I’ll just watch John Cleese in Clockwork, at least that was funny.

I can't reconcile with this one as a good read. I feel the ideas have been done over and over again, not necessarily the letter received in the middle of the night with instructions that said letter is to be read out the next night at the birthday party of a woman who's home is broken into.

The cat and mouse themes with threats of letting out secrets, and one party cheating on the other has done so often in my recent reads that I feel it's been done to death.

Sophie is awoken from slumber at 2am to be given a letter which must be read at her party the next night. Threats are made against her family and it all seems very real to her. I found this convoluted and farcical.

The 40th party was then realised to be a wedding, and I found none of this to be believable, also.

The writing was fine, I just was not convinced, and only liked one of the characters, and this was Sophie's soon to be husband's ex wife.

I am listening to a lot of audio in lockdown, and would not have proceeded with this one had I been holding the physical book in my hand.

Not sure how I feel about this one. I did enjoy reading it but didn't feel like it was "thrilling" enough. The plot was very straight forward and I saw where it was going from a mile away. It was very readable but slightly far-fetched and I just didn't feel like it went as far as it could have.

Sophie wakes up in the middle of the night. Her fiance Marc is away and there is a man in her room. He hands her a letter and tells her that she must open it at 8pm that night - which will be in the middle of her 40th birthday party. If she doesn't, he will return to hurt her and hurt her family. It's a "The Husband's Secret" kind of premise, but don't get your hopes up: this is a silly, unsatisfying book.

Sophie spends the first half of the book getting ready for the party, freaking out and trying to come up with various ways to get out of what she thinks is going to happen, while the reader sighs and wonders if anything is going to happen anytime soon. The contents of the envelope are revealed around the halfway mark and the second half of the book are about the fallout and Sophie working out who was behind it all. I was sufficiently curious to keep reading but the ending left me dissatisfied: there are so many unresolved plotholes and it just DOESN'T MAKE ANY RATIONAL SENSE. On top of that, I didn't care about Sophie one jot - this is supposed to be a grown woman? She behaves like a panicky teenager!

There just isn't enough to this book to make it work. None of the characters are credible, the (admittedly intriguing) premise is totally unbelievable and the ending leaves too many unanswered questions. I am itching to start listing all the many plot elements that are completely nonsensical but that would spoil the book for anyone who is still tempted to read it.

Setting: England; modern day.
On the eve of her 40th birthday party, Sophie wakes in the early hours to find a strange man in her bedroom. He leaves her a letter which he tells her she must open at 8:00 p.m. during her birthday party in front of all her friends and family - but she is not to tell anyone about his visit or the letter and must attend, failing which her mother and sisters will be at risk.
But Sophie is concerned about the content of the letter - recently engaged to new partner Marc, she thinks that his ex-wife Claudine is trying to sabotage their relationship. And unfortunately Claudine may have ammunition as Sophie, as a result of a drunken night-out, ended up sleeping with her best friend's husband whilst she and Marc were on a temporary break!
After the man leaves, Sophie rushes to her younger sister's flat, where she discovers more shocking news about her upcoming birthday party...
This was quite a fast-moving tale which I read in under a day although I must admit that the actions and thoughts of Sophie bugged me at times. However, there was an unexpected and quite shocking twist at the end, even though there were several questions left unanswered at the end, which was slightly annoying - 8/10.

Narrator Julie Maisey deserves an Academy Award for her stellar performance of Lucy Dawson's "You Sent Me A Letter".

I am a HUGE Lucy Dawson fan and this 2016 audiobook somehow escaped my radar.

Although there were some eye-rolling moments, from beginning to end, I was transfixed.

Lucy Dawson books are always a treat and this one was no exception.

4.5 stars.

That was great!!!

We're doing a "Book Train" in Women of Mystery. The book you read should have a title that starts with the last letter of the book read at the stop before yours. This was my turn, and I had... Y. Yikes.

So I had to go on a hunt for a mystery/thriller written by a woman, or a book that has a female protagonist, and I found this. And it was GREAT! I listened to it on audio, and the narrator was fantastic. It was the craziest story, completely unique, and tons of fun. I am so jealous of the piles and piles of good British thrillers across the pond! 4 very strong stars!

It's two in the morning, the morning of Sophie's 40th birthday, when she wakes to find an intruder in her bedroom. They hand her a letter along with a threat: she is to open the letter later this evening in front of everyone at her party at exactly 8 p.m. or the people she loves will be in danger. As sleep eludes her, and her family fills her day with surprises, Sophie wracks her brain to come up with an answer as to what the letter contains and who could've sent it.

I became aware about this book before it was published and had it on pre order. As soon as it arrived on my kindle, I couldn't wait to start it.

Turning forty is quite a milestone for most of us. It's one that will certainly be memorable for Sophie, but unfortunately for all the wrong reasons.

To wake up to a male intruder in the house is certainly enough to frighten anyone but the letter that he leaves Sophie with has her going through a whole load of emotions.

You Sent Me a Letter is a story that had me on the edge of my seat throughout. I could feel my stomach sinking along with Sophie's as she has to try and pretend that everything is fine whilst being in total turmoil.

I could really feel the chaos that was surrounding Sophie, the letter leaves her in such a predicament and to start with Sophie is just as confused as the reader is.

Fans of psychological thrillers are going to lap this novel up. It is a tense and nail biting read. There are certainly some twists in there that will send you in a tizzy. Highly recommended.

Positives:
- Right from the beginning, the book had me thinking what I would do in the position of the main character.
- I thought the scene where Sophie contacts the mobile phone provider was well done and realistic, especially when the customer service assistant took her through the security questions. These were questions I had experience of answering myself so I knew them to be accurate.
- The overall plot was clear and easy to understand why Sophie was doing what she was doing.
- When the story was getting to its end, it really left me with some "wait, hang on a minute moments" and had me questioning everything I had read up to that point.
- I really liked the 'race against the time' aspect as it made the story more suspenseful and made me want to keep reading.
- For most of the story the reader doesn't know who the antagonist/villain is and I really liked that. It created a 'whodunnit' feel and made me suspicious of most characters actions.

Negatives:
- I found it strange that an 8 year old child had a Facebook account and that their parents would allow that and be comfortable with it.
- Even though Sophie's mother probably meant well, she still came across as patronising and constantly believing that things should be done her way.
- Sophie took her bag out of the hospital but I found it strange how that wouldn't have raised her mother's suspicious or why Sophie didn't think it would.
- I actually found the way Marc had organised everything and gone through some of Sophie's paperwork to be quite freaky.
- I didn't understand the author's reason for deciding the big thing with the children at the end if it was never going to be resolved.
- It didn't seem right to me that Sophie was the only one being punished when there was actually two parties involved. And did the other person really get away scot-free?
- Even though I enjoyed reading this, the story isn't too memorable for me and I don't think I will think about it for a long time after reading this book.

Dear Ms Dawson,

I just finished You Sent Me a Letter, and my head is whirling. I want to cry but, but, BUT, and gnash my teeth in frustration. However, I also want to shake your hand, and congratulate you on an ending that shook me!

Yours sincerely,

My thoughts on You Sent Me a Letter by Lucy Dawson

This book starts off with an intriguing concept. The night before Sophie’s 40th birthday, a strange man breaks into her house, hands her a letter and tells her to open it at her party. He also threatens various members of her family and menacingly warns that he will be watching.

So that’s not the best way to spend the last night of your 30ths! From then on, it was a rollercoaster ride to the shocking reveal of letters content. Along the way, I suspected everyone. Sophie’s life is complicated, and I loved speculating just who is out for revenge.

I listened on audiobook and it is a lot shorter than most audiobooks. Which felt great as the pace flew along, and I never got frustrated by unnecessary detail. Instead I was listening every chance I got, and feeling more and more unsettled with every revelation.

I didn’t find that it was overly complicated, and I definitely guessed the culprit. But the reasons behind the letter are complex, the characters are interesting and the pace is fast. So overall I thought it was a very satisfying read. And that troubling ending elevated it even higher for me.

Who should read You Sent Me a Letter by Lucy Dawson?

I’d recommend this to you if you like quick-paced domestic noir type thrillers, and twisty endings. Fans of Gone Girl, Unravelling Oliver and The Girl on the Train should also enjoy this one.

I made the serious mistake of starting this early evening and I simply couldn't put it down until I'd finished it at 4am! I was totally hooked and immersed in it the whole time. Page 1 grips you and from thereon in the story has you in its grasp and won't let you go until the final page is turned.

Sophie is startled awake when she realises there is a man in her bedroom. Her partner, Marc, is away on business and she is terrified. The man gives her a letter with instructions as to where and when she has to open it (8pm that night in front of all her family) and the consequences if she informs anyone else about this. He has photos of her family on his phone and has obviously been following them for a while. Understandably she is absolutely terrified and flees the house after he has left and taken her mobile phone with him.

That day, Sophie's 40th birthday, completely spirals out of control as she struggles to keep the serious threats to herself and also her family safe as 8pm fast approaches.

The tension never lets up as Sophie doesn't know who to trust and why she is being persecuted so.

I thoroughly enjoyed this brilliant book and will definitely read more by this author.

Highly recommended.

Sophie is engaged to a man named Marc. Unfortunately he can't be home on the morning of her fortieth birthday and Sophie has to spend the night on her own. When she wakes up at 2 a.m. she finds a man in her bedroom who's watching her, someone she's never seen before. He gives her a letter which she's supposed to read at her party that evening. He threatens to do something awful to her loved ones if she doesn't do what he says. She can't tell anyone about the letter and she has to keep it safe until the evening. She has no idea what it says and still has the entire day to get through.

Sophie's birthday is supposed to be a special day. Her family and Marc have done everything they can to make the party memorable. Unfortunately Sophie can't enjoy any of it. She's distracted and stressed. They don't know what's going on with her and she can't say anything about it. Who's behind the letter and why does this person want to harm Sophie?

You Sent Me a Letter is a gripping read about a woman who has an awful fortieth birthday. Sophie's birthday party is supposed to be a spectacular surprise, only it doesn't work out because Sophie has that letter. Lucy Dawson manages to create a lot of suspense in a subtle way. Sophie thinks she knows who is behind the threats and the letter, but she doesn't know for sure. It's quite scary if someone's out to get you like that. And she has done something she regrets which doesn't make things any easier for her as well. I felt really bad for Sophie, for being in a situation like that.

I read this book in one sitting, I just couldn't put it down. The story is not extremely creepy, but the suffocating atmosphere and Sophie's panic kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading. I loved this original story and think You Sent Me a Letter is a really good, thrilling read.

The long title "You Sent Me a Letter: A fast paced, gripping psychological thriller" initially seemed a little odd, but it actually lived up to the description. Dawson's style is immediately engaging and the story had lots of twists and turns I was not expecting. Though I did guess at the villain's identity, it did not bother me. The characters were interesting, the writing fast-paced and engaging. I would definitely recommend this one!

It was good but Jesus I couldn't give it five stars because that ending was awful! what on earth wad the author thinking??? It makes no sense! what about the kids? And their poor mom! Please tell me there's a part two because otherwise those kids were taken away from their mother for nothing and HELLO she slept with that dude when they were separated! Her best friend has a right to be mad but Marc doesn't. End rant.

While parts of this book just make me openly weep for the state of a particular type of crime and just how easy it is, I found this interesting, but also difficult to read. The climax turned up rather quickly and kept me guessing, but the final reveal was a little obvious to my mind. The resolution answered some questions, and left others infuriatingly unanswered.

Well this one really gets right into it. There’s no hanging around with pleasantries, you’re dropped into the heart of the plot straight away. I love a domestic thriller and this one delivers. I wasn’t sure when I downloaded it because I can be a bit dubious about anything under 4 stars but I really got sunk into it.
In the first few chapters all evidence of the suspicious letter seems to point to Marc’s wife, with her apparent loathing of Sophie and intense personality, sophie can’t pin point anyone else who would do this.
To make matters worse she slept with her best friends husband whilst she and Marc were technically on a break, and it turns out Marc has organised her a surprise wedding. I was on the edge of my seat trying to think what might be in this letter and the repercussions it might have for her and the ones she loves. All I knew was that it was going to go down like a massive lead balloon and I couldn’t wait. It led me down a path towards the outcome i believed to be right to the point I was thinking what? No twist? But there is. I know a thriller book is good when my palms sweat and I get a bout of mild anxiety.. a nice afternoon of sweaty hands and stomach knots leading to a twist of an ending, that admittedly could have been better if it hadn’t left so much open.

This was a great 4 star thrill ride. Constant suspense, secrets, lies and plot twists. If you like a domestic thriller, get on board with this. I’m definitely adding the authors other works to my tbr promptly.

This story is mostly told over one panic-fueled day in which Sophie Gardner is having feelings of paranoia, guilt, stress, worry, and trepidation. This was a page-turner.

With palpable anxiety, the story was skillfully told, though to be fair, I found it quite ‘over the top’ in places. The book turned almost farcical at times. However, that being said, I rapidly turned the pages to discover for myself JUST WHAT WAS IN THAT LETTER?

Then, when the contents of the letter was revealed, I wondered how the story would move forward. The author cleverly wraps the story up, but not before misleading the reader with a plot twist or two.

I wondered while reading just why Sophie was so sure she knew WHO sent the letter. She was wrong and it seemed obvious to me that she was wrong. I wasn’t sure exactly who did, but I knew it wasn’t the person she suspected.

While reading I was simultaneously tense, confused, and compelled to read on. This plot seemed quite original, and it contained enough ‘red-herrings’ that most readers of the genre will be satisfied.

Will I read this author again? Most definitely. Do I think this might be her best work? Probably not, but quite an enjoyable read all the same. Recommended to readers who love psychological thrillers with twisty plots.

I really enjoyed this, the opening pages gripped me and left me with questions that I just had to keep reading to have answered. I loved that I was kept guessing as to who was responsible, there were definately things I didn't see coming and I was kept guessing right to the end. Started Sunday bedtime and finished by Tuesday lunchtime which is fast reading for me having two small children.
Was my first book by this author but doubt it will be my last, would recommend to friends and family.

This page turner was a real Agatha Christie of red herrings, but ultimately I was relieved at my choice of villain, for I was proved right in the end. Very gripping book, one of those ones you keep saying 'just one more page' to and then suddenly it's over and you wonder what on earth you will do now this roller-coaster ride has ended.

It’s the early hours of Sophie’s 40th birthday, when she awakes to find a stranger in her bedroom handing her a letter which she needs to open at her birthday party that evening. She’s obviously terrified, the stranger has threatened her family, so she needs to do as she’s told. But when she speaks to her sister she discovers that the party isn’t going to be quite as it seems, and it becomes incredibly difficult for Sophie to carry out the instructions.

This was a great and enjoyable psychological thriller, which really picked up in the last quarter of the book. Hints, red herrings and clues; all thrown into the mix as Sophie frantically tries to uncover her blackmailer. Will she get to the bottom of it all in time? I read the whole book in one day I was so keen to find out.
