Jurgen Grobler, one of Britain's most esteemed sporting coaches and the mastermind behind many Olympic rowing successes, has remained largely out of the spotlight throughout his life.
Any informative and interesting read about Grobler's shift from the East German regime to the rise of British rowing and any unequalled Olympic medal streak. Grobler did not official collaborate, so for the most part, this is a story told by others. Barely does technique get a mention with regard to making a boat go faster, but rather the approach of a coach with his squad to make the boat tick.
Solid read. It felt a bit dense at times, but I really appreciated the deeper look into what Olympic-level rowing truly requires — physically, mentally, and strategically. It gave me a new respect for the discipline, coaching, and teamwork behind elite performance. Overall, I enjoyed it and found it worthwhile.
The subject didn't collaborate with the authors as he had decided not to while still coaching, so an odd factual read, with no real insights. Probably won't get another print run.
