Jonathan Northrop is a successful author – for the moment. His next deadline is coming due and the original brilliance that led him through his debut novel seems to have worn off. In other words, writer’s block.
Newly but amicably estranged with his wife, Northrop decides to move out to a country house he had purchased on his first windfall while looking to live the storybook author’s life – seclusion, country air, and inspired writing.
Desperate to deliver a manuscript, Jonathan retreats to Whispering Corner in hopes of finding new inspiration for his horror novel.
But soon he’s about to get far more than he bargained for…
Strange whisperings and invisible presences begin to appear in the house.
Jonathan gets wind of local legends about the house and land, telling gruesome tales of ethereal and supernatural occurrences.
However, when life begins to imitate art in the most literal sense, Jonathan realises just what he kind of world he has walked into.
He fears he may have awakened some ancient psychic presence.
Amidst increasing supernatural activity, real life and fiction begin to intertwine to lead to a horrifying climax.
Whispering Corner is a gripping supernatural horror thriller with tones of the mystic and mysterious. It was previously published under the pseudonym Mark Ronson.
An interesting plot concept...the story of a writer writing a book or a book within a book. The entire story was well thought out and well written, and best of all...it kept me guessing... as well as having lots of unexpected twists and turns. What more could you ask from a book? It was based on a timeline before everyone had a laptop...and some of Jonothan's neighbors didn't even have a phone. Our Jonathan had more problems in his life than the lack of a best seller. His son taken off to college and his wife has trapsed off to America to "find herself". Since Jonothan's first book was not at all what he had hoped for, being a best seller...he thinks what he needs is a fresh view and inspiration... so he bought the stately old house, called Whispering Corner, hoping it would provide him peace, and inspiration for his next book and maybe help him sort out his less-than-ideal life. He got well more than he bargained for when he finds that the house somehow makes his fictional characters manifest themselves into his real life. Now here is what really made this a 5-star book for me... the most unique paranormal experience I have ever encountered...what if instead of the house being haunted, Jonathan is the one doing the haunting? Think about that for a while and enjoy discovering the answer. Note: This author also writes under the name of Mark Ronson & Alexander Marc
I was tempted to score this story a 5 but I felt it had been padded out with unnecessary sub plots which, in my opinion, detracted from the central theme.
I'm being generous in the 2 stars. The writing wasn't terrible, the premise was reasonable but it certainly wasn't horror, scary, supernatural. I surprised myself that I finished it (alot of skim reading). It wasn't worth the 22 year wait!
I decided to read this book after having first read Alexander's Plague Pit and having enjoyed it immensely. I was thrilled to see the integration of some of the characters I'd come to know so well in Plague Pit. There was no plague outbreak in this title but it seems only natural given the heavy impact that the plague had on England that it still play a part in establishing the foundation of the story. An author trying to find himself after having released books that failed to live up to his best seller as well as his son being off to college and his wife off to America to try to find herself. He finds himself struggling to create a book that will put him back on top and resolve the issues he is currently facing. Despite the troubles, he relocates to the old country manor he had purchased and fixed up to isolate himself from distractions and focus solely upon his writing. Here he faces the most unique paranormal experience, what if instead of the house being haunted, he is the one doing the haunting? Well written with a clever plot, Whispering Corner is hard to put down!
A writer moves to an isolated country home to quickly finish his novel, and the house is haunted and characters and events from his book, come to life. I Didn't think too much of this horror story. The premise was interesting but nothing very exciting happened
I don’t like to give negative reviews and would usually leave blank and unrated if something is not to my taste but in this case I feel the need to say something...
This story feels horribly dated in that the plot is so spectacularly unimaginative. It’s the sort of book I would have read as a teenager and felt like a grown up only to realise years later that it is in fact, incredibly immature.
Without spoilers, it’s a story of an author who’s fiction becomes true giving exerts of the story he’s writing so you are often reading a story within a story which sounds like a promising idea but in fact it is quite dull reading a badly written story which you know will soon be rehashed in the authors own reality and as such very repetitive.
There are one or two good ideas but dear god, the subplot of the king of Abu-wherever inviting the author to his country could have been dreamed up by a 5 year old. The scares are well... not scary, and the depressing twists in the latter part of the book regarding the love interest... was such a downer! This book simply is not worth its own word count and was certainly a chore to get through.
Why did I persevere? I think I pushed on to find out how it would all tie together in the end but I wish I hadn’t bothered.
Sometimes life and art are so intertwined that they can't be separated. Thank you for writing. I'm always interested in reading horror. Thank you for wrapping up all the loose ends of the story and for giving it such a great ending. Not all of the books that I read have a good ending.
Jonathan, a writer who is behind on his book due date moves into a secluded home he has purchased and has been having repaired. He has been having writer's block until moving into the house. As he finds out the house is haunted, the words start to flow. Very enjoyable book!
I wasn't sure what to expect from this author. The book was a great read and I will read another from this author. The story was or that was not easily guessible.
