I still remain partly damaged.

A little epilogue following the aftermath of Allegiant, five years after.

Was this ‘book’ really necessary? I’m not sure. Many say everything here was slightly implied in the ending of Allegiant. I didn’t see it.

Part of me is grateful because this indeed mended a part of me that was left severely damaged after the ending of Allegiant. Another part of me is repulsed by the fact that I hear this little addition was offered only exclusively for those who preordered the first book of Roth’s new series ‘Carve the Mark’, with the intent to boost sales. What a dick move.

Anyway. It’s a total wild card, it may even deepen the wound. Read at own risk.

Sigo estando en parte roto.

Un pequeño epílogo con las secuelas de lo sucedido luego de Leal, cinco años después.

¿Era este ‘libro’ realmente necesario? No estoy seguro.

Leer a riesgo propio.

Okay guys, let’s just get this out of the way first: I knew it. I KNEW IT. I just really stinking knew that it was going to end up like this.

*ahem*

Sorry. Now that that’s done, we can talk like adults. So, We Can Be Mended is the itty-bitty 33-page epilogue written by one of my all time favorite authors ever, Veronica Roth, tying up the Divergent world forever. In it, we catch up with arguably the fictional world’s dreamiest boyfriend: Tobias Eaton. Five years since Allegiant (and I’m still not over it), the epilogue focuses on Four’s life after the unexpected death of Tris.

See, I nearly peed my pants when I heard the news that Veronica Roth would be taking me back into the Divergent world again. I was so excited that I immediately screenshot the announcement and texted it to sweet Amanda, demanding that we both preorder Carve the Mark so we could get this long awaited epilogue. I was prepared to see Four move on, heal, enter a new chapter of life and *gasp* even find new love. Guys, I really was. I want Four to be happy, to be healthy… but I got the one thing I didn’t want.

Christina. The Candor smart-mouth.

But I’m getting a little ahead of myself now. When I first received the epilogue, I was super excited because I completely forgot about it, but then I was really sad because it’s literally the size of a pamphlet. However, thank God it wasn’t any longer than it was because I WANTED TO LIGHT IT ON FIRE by the time I was done. Needless to say, it’s been quite the roller coaster of feels for me lately.
So without further ado, the pros and cons:

1. It’s predictable.
From the second page, you’ll know exactly where it’s going. Which I guess is good since it’s only 33 pages? Anyway, not the point. The point is that from the second the scene opens up with Christina and Four standing together at a railing, you know that Veronica is working us toward the end goal of the two finding healing through each other. The Five Year Reunion is coming up and it’s being held at the former Dauntless Headquarters, the good old stomping grounds of our beloved gang, chalk full of memories of Tris <3

The opening lines don’t focus on Four, Tris or even the development of Chicago since the faction system imploded, but instead they focus on Christina and how her hair is “longer now than it’s ever been,” and then a detailed account of what her hair looks like now. If there’s anything we know about real life, it’s that people focus on minute details and even the slightest of changes of the people we care about and/or are attracted to. This is red flag #1.

2. World development
The world of Divergent has grown tremendously in the last five years, which is super cool. Since Allegiant, the factions have dispersed and a new society is being brought up. They’re no longer required to live in Chicago and have the freedom to travel between cities. Philadelphia is mentioned pretty quickly, which is cool! (Shout out to Philly! Ooh ooh!) Many of the characters from the original series have gone on to train new security/law enforcement, work in laboratories, or act as liaisons for other cities. Four, however, has stepped out of his role in politics (which is where we left off at the end of Allegiant) because he just doesn’t have the “charm” needed. I mean, that kind of makes sense… Four isn’t exactly known for his charisma!

A ray of sunshine in all this is that Cara (Will’s sister) and Matthew (from the Bureau) announce they’re getting married! Ah yes, a romance that actually makes sense.

3. Character Development
This is another area that I do feel like I need to give Veronica credit. She’s a pro at packing a lot of punch into small spaces, which can be said for her characters too. It is great to know exactly what each character looks like now, how their personalities and priorities have shifted, and how (if at all) they interact with one another. Right away, we see that Four and Christina haven’t really changed all that much. Four is just as broody as he’s always been, and Christina is just as obnoxious and in your face. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a Christina hater. If there was anyone in the series that I felt like I related to, it was her. We’re both loud, opinionated and stubborn.

But this is where Veronica lost me. In my opinion, it goes completely against Four’s character for him to fall in love with Christina. All along, though it was originally a defense mechanism, Four was completely fine being on his own. He didn’t need or want anyone. He had satisfaction that he’d left Abnegation and his abusive father behind, which was good enough for him. Until Tris came along, he didn’t think he’d ever be with anyone. That’s the joy of who Tris Prior was. She was the one thing that brought him back from the edge, saved him and showed him a future he’d never dreamed of. And though it’s completely tragic that he lost her (again, still not over it), it wouldn’t make much sense for him to move on to the next best thing: Christina. Throughout the series, Christina and Four had a relationship that was entirely platonic, one of siblings. I guess this brings us back to the age old question, “can men and women be friends without falling in love?”

Normally, I would argue no. But don’t get me started on that because I can talk for hours. But in this case, I would say: absolutely 100% freaking yes. There is an unwritten law that YA readers stand by and it goes something like this: don’t kill off Tris Prior, have us mourn alongside Tobias, leave us hanging with no way to recover and then have him fall in love with her prickly best friend who 50% of the readers didn’t like anyway. Does that seem like a good plan? No, not really. Not only are we NOT OVER IT, now you’ve just managed to give us the one thing we’ve been dreading. Unfortunately, this epilogue as a whole was not well received. Just check the rest of the Goodreads reviews. Most readers seem to feel stepped on or betrayed. Wamp wamp wamppp.

FINAL VERDICT

Overall, I was very disappointed. Not just disappointed though, filled with rage. *insert overdramatic sigh* I expected Four to move on and I certainly expected him to find love again (although I don’t think it was beyond his character’s integrity to simply find happiness with the memory of Tris), but I definitely didn’t expect (or need) him to end up with Christina. It feels untrue to who he is. I would’ve been fine had he found someone new, a character that hadn’t been in the original trilogy, someone who would’ve represented a new chapter and a new life for him. This someone could’ve helped him mourn Tris without ever trying to replace her. We’ve seen too much of Christina and she’s seen too much of Tris. Granted, she does understand Four in a way that most people would not be able to. But in my heart of hearts, I wanted Four to find someone new who was able to help him close that door, not just stand inside the doorframe with him and avoid the elephant in the room.

So, Veronica… I still love you, girl. I’ll still read your books and fangirl over your work. But this just feels wrong and, because I can, I will pretend that this epilogue never existed. Thanks though!

Love, Ky.

NO, JUST NO!
You don't get to dismiss everything that Tris was for Four. We want Four to ache for eternity because that's how WE the readers ache for his loss. You don't get to come around after so many years and STATE that life goes on. No, it doesn't.

Why this, after so many years of finale? Does VR miss the attention? I really wonder if it'll have any meaning reading this but I know I won't be able to resist it, lol!

Review contains spoilers

This was completely pointless. Seriously. What was the point? Literally nothing happened. Four got with Christina because he finally got over Tris which he said would never happen. Oh no my girlfriend is dead, I should date her best friend.
Pro tip: if your girlfriend dies, just date her best friend.
This is so stupid. Why does it exist? It should not exist. Allegiant *disgusted noise* ended fine. This thing is completely unnecessary. It wasn’t as bad as Allegiant mostly because it’s only 22 pages. I wasn’t a fan of the romance between Four and Tris, but you can’t just throw that all away so he can be with another person. And this is somehow supposed to show that he’s “healing?” I am so done with this series and I just can’t believe how horrible it is.
To Divergent: not you honey. You’re good.
1/5 I am disgusted, I am revolted, I dedicate my entire life to our lord and saviour Sankta Alina and this is the thanks I get?

There was NO point to this. It happened exactly as I knew it would happen. I didn't need to read this to know that Roth would do what she did. And... it just reminded me of how much I detest Allegiant.

Like, that book can burn for all I care.

ACTUALIZACIÓN!!!

{Estaba demasiado ocupado anunciando su nombre a los otros de Osadía como para ayudar a Christina a salir de la red. Pero por primera vez en mucho tiempo, cuando repaso ese recuerdo en mi mente, también pienso en Christina.}

PERO QUE REVERENDA MIERDA ACABO DE LEER???!!!!
VERONICA ROTH ME HA DESTROZADO LA VIDA DE TODAS LAS MANERAS POSIBLES!!! ESTABA DROGADA CUANDO ESCRIBIÓ ESTO?
SIENTO QUE LEÍ UN FANFIC O ALGO PARECIDO.

LOS PERSONAJES QUE SE DESCRIBEN EN ESTA HISTORIA NO SON NADA PARECIDOS A LOS QUE LEÍ HACE... TRES AÑOS(?

TOBIAS! MI TOBIAS!!! ES COMPLETAMENTE DIFERENTE, NO ES EL TOBIAS QUE QUERÍA SER ABNEGADO, OSADO, CORDIAL, HONESTO... ETC. ES UNA ESPECIE DE MUTANTE O ALGO ASÍ.

VERONICA SE CARGO LA SAGA EN ESTE EPILOGO!!! Y ESTOY LLORANDO DE TRISTEZA Y DE ENOJO POR ESO, PORQUE CREO QUE HE LEÍDO MEJORES HISTORIAS EN WATTPAD QUE ESTA PORQUERIA!!!

ES QUE COMO ES POSIBLE QUE CHRISTINA LE DIGA TOBIAS!!!! QUE TOBIAS LE CUENTE SUS PASAJES DEL MIEDO!!! LA HISTORIA DE SU FAMILIA!!!!! NO, NO, NO, NO!!! ME NIEGO!!!

Y ALGO QUE ME DESGARRO ES QUE TOBIAS RECUERDA LO DE {DILE QUE NO QUERÍA DEJARLO} NO SABEN COMO LLORE (MÁS BIEN COMO SIGO LLORANDO)

LITERAL DONDE ESTA EL SUERO DE LA MEMORIA CUANDO SE NECESITA!!!!

A TODOS LOS QUE DIGAN "TOBIAS Y CHRISTINA MERECÍAN QUEDARSE JUNTOS" QUE MIERDA LEYERON EN TODA LA SAGA? TOBIAS NO SOPORTABA A CHRISTINA, ELLA TAMPOCO A ÉL, NUNCA CONVIVIERON EN TODA LA HISTORIA!!! ASÍ QUE NO ME DIGAN QUE PORQUE SE QUEDARON SOLOS TENÍAN QUE QUEDARSE JUNTOS, PORQUE NOOOOO, NO DEBIERON QUEDARSE JUNTOS NUNCA!!!!

VERONICA ROTH TE ODIO! TE ODIO! TE ODIO! TE ODIO!! TE ODIO!!! DESTRUISTE UNA MAGNIFICA SAGA SOLO PARA VENDER TU NUEVO LIBRO!!!!
------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay...

Listen, I know there are a LOT of people who hated the ending of the Divergent series. Clearly, I was not one of them. No, I am on of the thousands of Divergent fangirls. And I am totally ok with that.

To be honest, if Veronica Roth published Four’s Grocery List, I would be the first one pre-ordering it. We know this. It’s nothing new! So, when I saw that she had written a brief story giving us insight into Four’s life after the events of Allegiant, I almost exploded with excitement.

When I received my copy in the mail I noticed it was tiny. Not only short, but literally a tiny little book- like one of those bible handouts that weird lady leaves at my teller window every third of the month. It literally fits in the palm of my hand! I have to say I was disappointed. I knew it would be brief, but didn't think it would all fit on one full-size piece of paper. The length definitely fell short of my expectations. (Ha!)

What about the contents within this tiny story? Well… again, I confess myself disappointed. I had a feeling I knew where she was going to take this due to the THOUSANDS of fans hoping for it… but I was really hoping she wouldn't take it there.

She did.

*shrugs*

I mean, it’s whatever I guess, but it isn't at all what I thought would happen given Four’s character. How Roth got them there was done well though, and for that I say thank you. I’m ok with it, but it felt a little unnecessary. And for fuck’s sake, you could have given me a 100-page short story that built the story up instead of just lumping it together.

Abracadabra! Bada-boom! Presto! Voila!

I’ve never been a fan of quickies. The reason I enjoyed Divergent so much was the slow buildup. My god! Veronica Roth creates sexual tension like you wouldn't believe. So for her to write this tiny little story with almost no romance or tension made me want to punch her in the throat a little.

Yeah, I said it.

But, it’s Four. So 100 points to Gryffindor and all that.

It isn't a complete waste of time…but Veronica Roth- You’re better than this and I think you know it.

Nopity nope nope nope noooooooope!

and Four???????

What the ever loving fuck is this?

Killing Tris was one thing - it hurt like hell (and I would have stopped reading after Book 1 if I'd known) but I am still reeling and will never read the series again finally over the emotional trauma of it all.

But now this?

There's an unspoken agreement between YA authors and readers that the main couple (or the most shipped one) gets a HEA.

Ms Roth didn't just ignore this memo, she now also ripped it to shreds and set it on fire.

WHY VERONICA?! WHY! I wish I could forget that this book even existed!

Ugh... It seemed really unnecessary, useless! A very feeble attempt to just move the story. This was not what I had expected. If I could I would give negative stars to it!
If you're still a Divergent fan and haven't read this one yet, I would recommend to stay away from it.

4 very sad STARS

"We mend each other"

Where do I begin....
☾First I want to say how admirable it is that Veronica wrote the ending that she deemed was the best for her characters. She knew how controversial the ending would be, and wrote it anyways - dedication at its finest.

However while I'm giving four stars to the writing, I personally did not like the path the epilogue was taken. I was hoping to see more into the life of our favorite characters - Tobias included. Instead the epilogue was focused mainly on the fact that Christina and Tobias end up together.

☾I feel like the two getting together ruins my memory of the divergent trilogy in so many ways. Again, I totally respect that Veronica chose this ending knowing how the fans would react. I'm not bashing the ending and I don't dislike the ending simply because of "shipping FourTris".

☾The quote "We Can Be Mended" meant so much to me when I first read Allegiant, it was a symbol of Tris and Four. After finishing the epilogue those words were ruined for me and I'm not sure I'll ever be able to read them again.

You literally had to ruin it, again. It was fine, my heart was broken, but it would live after Allergen. And then you do this to me.

To be honest, I'm a little hurt right now. And I'm depressed all over again thinking of Allegiant's ending.. Just why?!?! I'm seriously so disappointed. I love Four, and reading from his voice again was pretty much the only good thing about this novella.

We Can Be Mended is a short novella, told from the perspective of Tobias, that takes place five years after the events of Allegiant and acts as an epilogue to the series.
“We work, and dream. We fight, and we laugh, and we fall in love. We move.

And we mend.”

I think the reason this novella has such a low rating is because people weren’t happy that Tobias and Christina ended up together. I, however, am probably one of the only people that was really satisfied with this epilogue. I thought it was a realistic and honest portrayal of the aftermath of a war and the healing and growing that is necessary in order to survive and cope. It was touching seeing all the characters again and finding out new things that were happening such as Zeke and Shauna having a baby and Cara and Matthew getting married. My favourite aspect of it though was watching Christina and Tobias find and help each other through their grief. It makes sense that these two characters would find their way to one another because they've both experienced losing a loved one, and then they share in the loss of Tris. The memory of Tris is still there but it was touching knowing that through that, they could both love again and mend each other and that was the whole point of the novella, to get that message across. And I think it did so perfectly.

This is so freaking morbid I almost lost my shit.

This feels like Allegiant over and over again but Tobias Eaton version. My heart hurts so bad right now and it feels like I’m being murdered. All pain the came rushing back together with a full force nostalgia.

Let it be fucking noted: Veronica Roth annihilated my heart, she ruined it and mended it again.
