Spirit Chasers #2

Melancholy Ghost

Rate this book
From ghost hunter to ghost, haunted.

Barrett has a plan — help Austin regain his memory, surround him with his friends and loved ones, and lead him into the light. Unfortunately, the tragic investigation of a melancholy ghost derails everything.

As new lead investigator, Thai struggles to maintain the high ratings SCI has always enjoyed. After a few subpar investigations, the network execs demand results, even if it means the team must put their lives on the line for a house more deadly than its dead occupants.

There are worse things than being dead.

Austin knows something is wrong. Most people ignore him, time eludes him, and his hands are basically worthless. If only he could remember what happened, he would have the answers he so desperately seeks. He’s sick of Barrett’s lies and Casey’s deflections. Austin will have to figure this one out on his own. Will the truth set him free, or destroy his soul?

Melancholy Spirit is the second book in the Spirit Chasers series – and, in all honesty, I enjoyed it more than the first.

Whilst a much quicker read than the first book, Melancholy Spirit seems to hit a much harder punch than the first book. I’m not quite sure what specific aspect of the story is to blame for this, but I’m going to go ahead and explain all the wonderful aspects that I feel contributed to this being the case.

First, I’ll start with the new ghost lore. In Melancholy Spirit we’re introduced to some new and original ghost lore, and I positively loved this. I’m not going to say what the lore is – because, as always spoilers, even when the information is given at the start of the story – but it certainly adds a unique twist to this series. I’m hoping we get to find out even more about this new aspects of the story in the future books, as it’s certainly left me curious as to the specific details. Is this new lore impossible to fix? Is there any hope when such a thing happens? Whilst there are events that suggest answers, I feel as though there is still hope.

Second, we have the developments of the characters. I really enjoyed our cast in the first book, and I feel as though there was real development for some of them in this book. I would have liked to see more of some of the characters – but those who the central story surrounded really grew. Considering the twist at the end of the last book, it was unclear just how things would play out, and I really liked watching the way the events lead to the development of certain characters.

Third, linking back to my above statement, is the events within this book. As with the first book, a lot of focus was upon the individual characters and how their stories progressed rather than upon the individual hauntings. As with the first book, there was ample attention played to the hauntings – with the hauntings being linked to the overall story and our knowledge of the world – but most attention was upon taking our main characters to new stages in their lives. We get to see how the ending of book one impacted everyone; we get to see the way certain characters come together; we get to see the way people deal. I was expecting a little bit more by the way of emotional moments, but the way the characters came together was wonderful once again.

Whilst those three are the largest aspects combining to make a wonderful story, there were also smaller things that left me completely in love with the book – and the series.

Even though I gave the first book a four star rating, it wasn’t quite a solid four star read. It was close enough that I needed to round up – there was no other choice, as it was so close – but it still wasn’t quite there. This second book, though, was a solid four star rating. No ifs or buts about it, just a solid four star read. It took everything I enjoyed about the first book and amplified it.

The interactions of the characters. The slowly developing world. The gripping tale. The wonderful pace. The addictive story.

This book really is made up of the little things coming together so nicely, adding an entirely new level to the world introduced to us in book one. I really could go on and on about the small details, but I fear doing so will leave me giving spoilers. Spoilers is the last thing anyone needs – so I’ll hush up now.

Just know this is a wonderful second book. If you enjoyed the first them I’m positive you’ll have a lot of fun with this one. It’s a quick read, but it adds so much to the overall story.

Not to mention the ending. Once again, it left us with questions. I cannot wait to see what comes next in the story. It really could go in so many different ways, and I’m super excited to see what the author decides to do.

Am I excited to get my hands on the next book? I sure am!

Honestly, if you’re a fan of the paranormal, of psychics and ghosts, I certainly recommend picking up this series. It’s all kind of addictive and fun.

Spirit Chasers book 2 was as equally enthralling as Kat Mayor had made book 1. I couldn't turn the pages [if one can when reading a story from a Kindle] fast enough to see what would happen next and if any of my own guesses about the next chapter would be right or wrong. The one thing I do not do is rush to the last page to find out what happens. What a rotten spoiler that would be.
I certainly do enjoy reading these Spirit Chasers books by Kat and have already started on the 3rd and last book in the series. Well done to Kat for keeping the reader on a knife edge.

This was a great addition to the series. I love the cover even more than the 1st. Poor Mildred. I’m happy the author at least gave her a shout out. A special dedication is on the cover, a tombstone with her name on it.
This book has a more mellow tone, Melancholy Ghost being the perfect name for it.
Melancholy isn’t as action packed as book #1, but it has interesting experiences and gives different insights about ghosts. There were neat concepts from ghosts shattering souls to an entire ghost society called Deadwood.
The ghost hunting team is back in affect. This novel has a character profile page at the beginning that was great with helping me to remember what each person can do. The different investigator's talents worked well together to make the perfect blend for a great ghost hunting team. Melancholy Ghosts did a good job with showing each of their talents. I feel like I understand better what each person’s gift is than I did before.
In the middle of this book there is a very intriguing house that sits on evil land. She/The house was a bitch. She could transform and throw you into other parts of the house. Anything to screw around with you. Or another of her tricks, making things fall in order to hurt or kill you. I think her ultimate goal was to drag whoever she could to the pits of hell with her. That house reminded me of the movie Red Rose.
I also liked the fact that I was able to read it at night. Book #1 involved demons and scared me shitless. This story kept a nice pace with keeping the same trend from book #1 with investigations and getting to still see what was going on in the character's lives.
On that note, I’m so glad that Ms. Mayor continued the series how she did. I don’t want to spoil too much, but I think that having Austin in this book gives some sort of closure. Or more like a, to be continued, but in a happier light involving Austin.
Due to Austin’s situation, this book had a lot of sad concepts, but that is because he didn’t have a clue as to what was really going on. It worked well with the plot. I am also happy that there was still a bit on romance. I’m always a fan of romance since that is my preferred genre.
I enjoyed the unique love scene. It was a good choice with the dynamics of how things could work. Lol. Melancholy Ghosts has a great cliff hanger ending. I said a few choice words towards the intro of the new guy. One phrase was, “Who the hell do you think you are.”
I think Austin would agree. I’m looking forward to the next episode of Spirit Chasers.

As most of you know, I'm not much of a fan of paranormal romances. The women are usually doormats, the men are usually domineering asshats.

This series is very different. I loved the first book . The second book holds up very well as a sequel. This might sound odd but I loved the idea of some spirits It's a bit of a sad and depressing idea but also a fantastic, logical and creative addition to the lore.

In this book we are a bit more in Barrett's head than before and Kat Mayor does a great job of making his voice much different than Casey's. The book doesn't suffer for it at all. The story is as good as ever and the interactions of the team are again one of the high points of the book.

I did have a few issues with it. One of them, however, was a natural flow of the book so it was logical and made sense within the story. I honestly don't think I've ever written that about a book couple before.

I can also see why they would take so long to tell Austin what had happened but it was a bit frustrating after a bit. Again, though, it makes sense within the story. They are worried about what will happen to him and the reluctance on Casey's part is very natural as well. She doesn't want to let go. Which makes perfect sense.

The only other issue I had was a bit of a logic problem. I am going to hide this as it is a heavy spoiler at the end of the book. The above spoilers are rather light but I just want to warn you this is a big one.

Almost as good as the first

Spirit Chasers are still going strong, even after all the tragedies of the last season. The friends are working hard to protect Austin, while also trying to raise the show's flagging ratings. It seems the hits keep coming.

This is a great series. While this book wasn't quite as good as the first, it still kept me riveted to the pages from beginning to end.

Absolutely Stunning

I was hesitant to read this because there was no way it could be even half as good as the first book; but it was even better! I couldn't put down my tablet until it was over and I miss Casey already! I need to see what happens next! Now I have to see what other amazing works this author has!

A good series.

I enjoyed this story. Austin is s ghost but does not know it. SCI is filming a new season but facing difficulties. Casey knows Austin needs to be told the truth about his being dead , but she had mixed feelings about it. I like the cases SCI investigates. The ending is s surprise.

Praise Kat Mayor!
This is a great second installment in the series, but the ending was cliff hanging. This is the kind of roller coaster plot; there are mixed feelings and we cant help to push for the underdog.
Love the first Spirit Chaser book and it was the same type of hopefulness filled with despair.
Can't wait for the next.

If you read my review of The Spirit Chaser you can see I love this series. I was absolutely thrilled to see this 2nd book. I dove right in and did not climb out until the last page then I pouted because it was over. I cannot wait for the next book to come out.

In this book, Austin is back. He is not aware that he is dead and his thinking process is scrambled and no memory of being dead or how he got there. Prudence a ghost from the first book is back as well. She is the one who found Austin and brought him to Casey.

The team has agreed that until Austin is more ready mentally to know he is dead they should act like he is still alive and not tell him. This actually goes on for far to long. As memories start to slowly return Austin becomes more and more suspicious and finally he runs across the film of his death at SCI and everything comes crashes in on him, and what he believes is the betrayal of his friend and love of his life for not telling him. In a fit of rage he takes off, luckily Prudence follows him and gives him a pep talk and also helps him learn how to manage his afterlife.

I'm stopping there with the story review I don't want to go into any more detail and ruin the whole book. This is a must read as a series. The 2nd books picked up right where the 1st left off. The ending of this book leaves the story to continue in the next book. I cannot personally wait for book 3. This is one of most interesting series I have read. Usually when I read a series unless I have all the books I don't usually pick the series back up later unless I just happen across the next book. This series I have had this 2nd book on my TBR list since finishing the first a while back. I will be adding the next book as soon as I know the name of it. I also have the author on Good Reads and subscribe to her email so I can keep track.

I love how this series if full of detail but not overwhelming. The details are pretty much important. Some books pack in details and you can skip over them but with this book you pretty much need the details which are more like clues, almost like a mystery. I still love how Kat Mayor makes everyone a star of her books, everyone has a staring roll in the books. They each play a key part in making this series as great as I feel it is. This book didn't have as much of a scare factor to me as the 1st book but it was pretty much about Austin. Not to say that there were not plenty of investigations by the crew during the book, and not to say that there was no scare factor. One investigation in this book did have a really creepy scare factor to it more then the others, you will have to read the book for that though..

Hurry up Kat and get book 3 out to me!!!

Austin Control

Wasn't sure after the end of the first book where the story could go, but I was surprised to read there was a twist at the end of the 2nd book, I really enjoyed the second installment, I love the cover of this book a lovely visual nod to Mildred, can Casey & Austin have there happy ever after? Can love really flourish from beyond the grave? Who knows? Eagerly waiting for the third installment to see if they all get there happy endings or will the story meander down other roads.
