This children's book teaches through photographs and simple explanations the transformation of butterflies as they hatch from an egg and then go through metamorphosis to became a butterfly.

I will definitely be on the look out for the other books in this series.

A butterfly is one of the most beautiful and fascinating creatures that nature has created, and kids cannot get enough of them. This little book is a photographic documentary of a butterfly's journey from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. The photos are super close up and gorgeous. There are some of the tiny caterpillar struggling to come out of the egg, and some of it coming out its old skin and emerging all striped and ready for action. Most of the time I am all about illustrations and not photographs in picture books, but this is the exception for sure. The story is written from the perspective of the butterfly, and it's pretty much captions to the photos, but it is cute and does a good job of making it feel like a story and not a science book. Mary Ling has a whole series of How They Grow books, and I'm excited to find some of the others. We Give Books has this one listed under ages 0-3, and that's probably right on, but my four year old and seven year old also loved those pictures. Great book.

Informational: I thought that the pictures were really fun in this book. They were photographs so it would be really interesting for kids to see them and recognize seeing them in nature. I thought it was a little dry, personally, but I could see how some kids would prefer this kind of text.

Very simple text to help readers learn how the butterfly changes from when it grows to when it becomes an adult. It is a short story, but done in a way that younger readers will be able to see with the pictures that are used and the visual at the very end of the story.
