Death. Lies. Revenge.

After years of running, Kate Jones is finally putting her past behind her. Between restoring ties with her younger sister, moving in with Sam, a cop-turned PI, and working as a PI herself, she's learning to live life without looking over her shoulder.

Then Kate lands a case that changes everything: a young college student with no history of drug abuse dies of an overdose, and the parents come to Kate demanding answers. Soon, Seattle is reeling from dozens more deaths, all with the same chemical markers. At first, police assume that the victims are closet junkies who got a hold of a bad combination, but after someone close to her becomes a victim, Kate believes something far more sinister is going on.

The deeper Kate digs, the more she uncovers about the deadly drug’s origins, forcing her to choose between doing what’s right…

and getting revenge.

Don't waste your time.

Didn't enjoyed this thriller, there was many five star reviews. Kate Jones after the person or persons selling the drugs put her younger sister overdosed. She wasn't the only person dying from this drug tainted with fentanyl.

OMG, D! You have outdone yourself! Best one yet!

If you are looking for a strong female protagonist and a high octane thriller, look no furthert!

Every time I think DV Berkom can’t make a Kate Jones Thriller even more thrilling, she puts out a story like Vigilante Dead.

Kate has been running from her past for a long time, but now she has settled down. She is a private investigator and has a gorgeous man, Sam, at her side. He is a super guy who gives her space and time when she needs it and some lovin’ when she needs that.

When her sister ODs, the hunt is on…

Drugs, murder, vengeance…

I love books that make me think of our life choices. We all march to our own drummer and who knows what will work if we don’t explore our options. BUT, sometimes we get off course and the road we walk takes us down a dark and dangerous path. So does Kate.

Kate grows more complex with each story told, but danger follows her through each and every one. This time, D took her somewhere that totally blew my mind. Sometimes the character demands that you go there, go where the bad guy goes to get your answers.

DV Berkom’s characters are strong and bold, and sometimes I think they need to have a little more fear. I worry for them. Every time Kate went creeping around, staking out places, I waited for the hammer to fall. I do love that she does things I only think about.

Kate fights the lows that wash over her when she thinks of all she has been through and lost by making mistakes in her youth. They left her with nightmares. Her rash actions and decisions can get her in difficult and dangerous situations.

Kate’s family pisses me off! and her wimpy dad is a huge disappointment to me. Am I being too harsh? You will need to decide.

And Angie, a badass assassin, you are a woman after my own heart, until…

You make a deal with the devil and you get burned.

I cannot quit reading, not for a second. I cannot wait to learn the ending of Vigilante Dead…thoughts are running through my mind, fed by the title. I am loving and hating what I am thinking.

The twists and turns DV Berkom has supplied in Vigilante Dead has ratcheted the suspense and my anticipation to a white knuckled, nail biting level. With all that is happening I am wondering where DV Berkom will leave Kate.

I am mentally yelling at her…DON’T DO IT!!!!!

Yet the little devil whispering on my shoulder says…

Oh, Kate, Kate, Kate….what an inferno of…stubbornness, determination, passion and independence you are.

The seven Kate Jones novels preceding this have all been heart-in-your-mouth thrillers. I was slightly bemused by the fact that Kate’s finally able to stop running; she’s settled down with ex-cop-now-PI, Sam, she’s talking to her family again, and life is nearly norm—wait, wait, WAIT…this is Kates Jones! I nearly fell for the Kate-leads-a-normal-life line! Impossible…especially since someone she loves dearly is affected by some dodgy painkillers (from an equally dodgy source), and as a result, Kate’s on the warpath. And the route leads her into a head-on collision with irony, something which causes her to make some very rash decisions, blurring that very fine line between right and wrong.

This was the usual Kate Jones hold-on-to-your hat, roller-coaster ride…as you would expect…but there was an extra intriguing ingredient: the reader gets a little more intimate with Kate’s family…who up until now have been very much in the background. This adds another dimension to an adventure which nonetheless leaves you breathless right to the end.

Kate’s rounding up nearly all the bad spirits that have been derailing her life…what on earth is she going to do now, I wonder? Needless, to say, I was, as always, riveted by this book as will all Kate Jones/Berkom fans.

Kate Jones, working with, Sam, a cop-turned PI, and reestablishing her relationship with her kid sister, hopes that she has finally put her past behind her, and that her days of looking over her shoulder and running are finally over. When kids in Seattle start overdosing on a new street drug, the cops don’t pay much attention, but when Kate’s sister, Lisa, ODs and is left in a coma, she starts to look into it. She quickly discovers that what’s happening is far more sinister than a mistake made by drug dealers, or even a move by a drug cartel. Powerful people are involved, and Kate’s faced with a problem; does she take what she knows to the cops, or does she do what she does best—get revenge for her sister.
Vigilante Dead is another D. V. Berkom thriller with a kick-ass female main character who doesn’t even bother to take names, and who definitely takes no prisoners. This is a non-stop thrill ride from page one, and the pace doesn’t let up until the last bad buy has gotten his just desserts. There’s not a wasted word, even the descriptions of the locale are filled with tension and keep the story moving, and the characters; well, what can one say about them, other than that they are so real, you can smell the fear sweat and feel the angry heat radiating off their bodies.
If you’ve not read this author before, this is a good book to start with, and then, if you’re smart, you’ll get up off your rear end and get her other books pronto.
I received an advance reader copy of this book; read it right away, and couldn’t put it down until I finished it. Berkom’s hit another one out of the park with Vigilante Dead.
I give this one five stars.

Vigilante Dead is a great read with a thrilling plot. The character, Kate Jones is a strong, independent, and tough woman. In this story she found even more strength and was able to fight all her demons and be willing to be alone when all was complete.

The way DV Berkom merged past information about the main character, Kate Jones, into the current plot was a perfect combination of past and present. She made it so easy to remember all I needed to about characters from previous books. The new plots adventure and drama were so unique. DV describes scenes so well you believe you were there.

I was intrigued from the beginning and my interest held until the end. As always, when reading a book by DV Berkom, the end leaves you wanting more and looking forward to the next book and the next stage of Kate's life.

Kate Jones is a PI for Akiaq Investigations. Kate's sister, Lisa, ends up in a coma from a drug overdose, with Fentanyl in her system. After her sister, more deaths from the same drug are happening. Kate is determined to find the source. With Kate's sordid past and drug cartel involvement, she takes it upon herself to track the source on her own.

Her undercover work gets her into situations where her life is in danger. It gets complicated when her path crosses with someone from her past that she was hoping not to see again.

Vigilante Dead is a roller-coaster ride with suspense and unpredicted twists. The characters are well developed and they keep you engaged wondering what will happen next. The story is fast paced and well written.

Excellent – had me nervous from the outset
I’ve read and really enjoyed all DV Berkom’s Kate Jones thrillers. This is the latest and picks up a little while after the last one. Kate is in Seattle and still living happily, almost in contentment with the lovely, enigmatic Sam. That was very pleasing, but knowing her track record, it made me a little nervous for his wellbeing. Of course, this being a thriller; giving you any details would constitute spoilers, so I’m trying to review without any.
The progression of and growth of Kate’s character throughout the series is really convincing; so much so that I was mentally saying ‘don’t do it’ just before a couple of her classic Kate decisions in this latest chapter of her life.
What I love about this series is this… Kate is a normal woman, who experiences challenging (to say the least!) situations seizing them by the tail, often without the planning one would wish. She manages to extricate herself from sticky situations, always learning something, but often ignoring that vital lesson enabling us to have another novel in the series. She’s a convincing protagonist, as are all the characters within the series; even the small and transitory ones. The author doesn’t over emphasise the back history, giving just enough explanatory information for any new readers, without annoying those of us in the know, nor do they clutter up the page with an excess of adjectives; writing clear and intelligible prose that sets the scene, allowing me, the reader the freedom to visualise everything. It must be a tough balance, and one that many authors fail to achieve in my opinion – too often it can feel as though a novel is a little laboured, but all DV Berkom’s flow beautifully.
As I said, I’ve read all the back catalogue and as a result, when I downloaded this, the latest in the Kate Jones series, I was in a quandary – should I ration myself, so that it lasted, or be indulgent and immerse myself thoroughly over the course of a couple of evenings. I decided that restraint was the way to go, and as a result it lasted me a week. Now of course, I can’t wait for the next one!

This one was really neat. It combined elements of Kate's past along with some new stuff to take her in a totally different and unexpected direction. I totally didn't see it coming. As with all the books in this series, Vigilante Dead is full of action, surprises and Kate's snarky sense of humor. Definitely worth the read.

I experienced a full range of emotions whilst reading this book. It's written so well, one can see the events as if it's a movie, and this is definitely a book I will add to the movie list. Kate teams up with a sassy Southern Belle assassin (yes, down to the painted fingertips and the accent) to take some lessons on well how to kill and torture. Kate's sister is in a coma after taking contaminated pain killers, others have died. Kate somehow just can't sit around and wait, especially when she finds out this contamination leads to places it definitely should not. The thing is, Kate is really not a killer, she is unsure of herself, is treated really badly by her family and she's very fragile around Sam, the love of her life. Problem is, when your paid instructor sees you as her "mentee" and inserts her quirky self bang sqauare into your life, things are bound to get messy...
I giggled, gasped, cried, was in fact getting vocal "oh please don't trust ..." I highly recommend this author. She doesn't just write a good thriller, her characters are memorable. I downloaded a free copy of this book during a promotion and do reviews for all the books I read, whether purchased or not. Enjoy!

Wow!!! Fast paced thriller that grabbed my attention from the very beginning. I wanted to throttle Kate at times for some of the dangerous/stupid decisions that she made but she managed to get lucky and survive several harrowing scenes. My first Kate Jones book. I will definitely be looking forward to reading the others in the series.

Vigilante Dead is the eighth book in the Kate Jones Thriller series, and the first book I've read by DV Berkom. Unlike some book series in which each book could be read as a stand-alone, Kate's backstory is so intertwined with this tale that I was left in the dark about some of the characters/events mentioned.
.
Kate's younger sister Lisa suffers from migraines. To control the pain, she buys some drugs at a party that are tainted, causing Lisa to end up in a coma. When other people start dying from the same drug, Kate and her new boyfriend Sam start investigating the source of the drug. Kate's past comes back to haunt her as she digs deeper into the case.
.
Besides entering the series in the middle, I was very impressed with Berkom's writing. Her characters, especially Kate, are very well crafted, and each had their own personality that shows quite well on the page. The action is crisp and well paced, and there are very few slow moments in the novel. Berkom has created a heroine, flaws and all, that the reader can easily root for. I'm very interested in digging into this series again, this time from the beginning.

Vigilante Dead by D.V. Berkom

This was a good one. A nice round set of characters. Each with their own special good points and bad points. The plot was interesting and quirky. Even though it was a sequel from another story by the same author we were able to follow this without having read the original story.

That is quite a skill.

We got to like, respect, and sometimes hate the characters. The engagement was what captured me. While not great literature and not of the very highest order of thriller/mystery writing, this is a very good novel.
Excellent work.

I’ll be looking for more.

Book #5 – Kate Jones …Vigilante Dead
Can’t a girl just lie low, relax, have a relatively normal life and even a love life?
Why can’t she not get friends, family and foes mixed into each other’s lives?
Do they need to get caught in her past lives and get hurt physically and emotionally torn apart?
Can she not get some success without vengeance?
Does Kate need to loose everyone and everything to clear her bad spirits from her?
How painful has her life become?
Can she rebuild herself in the eyes of her hurt friends, families and lover?

Now that the drug cartel leaders that want Kate Dead have been killed she has settled into a normal life. At least as normal as a PI can live. When a person close to Kate is tragically affected by bad illegal drugs Kate is ready to go on the offensive. She is also contracted by the parents of a young man killed by the same drug. Again, Kate is growing and is no longer reacting to events; she is being proactive. Help comes from an unexpected source. An enemy is now her ally. Follow Kate in her quest to right a wrong that hits close to home.

I hope there is more Kate to read in the future.

Wow! This is an excellent book! Truly a first-class read! I love the protagonist. I love the fact that she learns things about herself along the way. Valuable things. This book is one of the best of this genre I've read in quite awhile. I read it straight through. In a world of fair to middling online authors, D.V. Berkom stands out as a writer with real talent who writes an excellent yarn. I'm really excited to read more of her books. This one was a freebie on Amazon. How clever of her to make such a great book free. It certainly whetted my appetite for all of her other books.

After thoroughly enjoying the Leine Basso series, I entered this series with an open mind but was consistently disappointed by the chain of events that make up the plot. Kate Jones is an idiot, pure and simple. And even though you could write that off as great character development because it does evoke a reaction from the reader, it didn't work for me. Her character doesn't ring true or even stay true to character. The editing is great and I know Berkom has the potential to write a great action thriller, I've read a few. But this one missed the mark.

Great thriller

Kate worked as a private investigator with her boyfriend Sam an ex policeman. Together they had a thriving business then Kate's sister looking for street pain medicine for her migraines bought pills that contain ed large amounts of fentanyl and ended up in a coma. The same night another couple list their only son to the same pill. Multiple deaths occurred. Kate set on a devastating task of finding out who had supplied the drug. Many twist and turns developed in this fast paced exciting thriller. It was hard to put the book down. A great novel.

Devastatingly murder mayhem

When Kate's sister goes into a coma following an overdose of a flawed drug which was given to her by a dealer who was working with a criminal in league with the CEO of a large pharmaceutical company who deliberately flooded the market with knowledge that the pills were lethal, she takes the law into her own hands and murder/mayhem commences. Not a book to be missed

I think I'm glad I read this book out of order in the series; I found the character so unlikeable that I was barely able to finish it and glad I missed the 7 books in front of it. The book itself was well-written, but one of my pet peeves in story-lines is a female character that thinks she is invincible, rushes in and keeps putting herself (and sometimes others) in extreme danger. I rate this one 3.8 stars.

Great reading, amazing suspense story. Kate finally has a life as a PI. She's connected with her sister, who is also a PI. Then parents come to her to find out what happened to their daughter. Drugs seemed to be involved, then someone else dies, and close. Something is suspicious. Loved the whole book, couldn't put it down.

Read it in one afternoon

This well written book grabs your attention from the start until the end. Many twists and turns with believable characters and plots. I did have a problem with Kate's inability to stop and "THINK" before she acted . I guess that's because I was a therapist for 35 years. Would recommend this for anyone who loves a great thriller.

A good read for thrillers lovers

DV Berkom has a very easy style of story telling, making it a breeze to identify with some of the characters human flaws. Enjoyed reading this before bed over the last few nights. If you like thrillers that entertain you with strong characters, read Vigilante Dead.

A Confusing Mystery

The plot and cast of characters was confusing in this fast paced story. Sad for the characters who died from the drug overdose but think the plot to avenge the deaths was hard to follow.
