The rhythm of desire

Former child star Roxanne Deveraux is stepping back into the spotlight. Tired of growing up in front of sitcom cameras, she left Hollywood and her controlling parents to finally follow her true passion, which exists offstage. Still, the offer to appear on Celebrity Dance is hard to resist—as is Nicholas Torres, her dance partner. He's creative, passionate, and they're growing more and more in sync—until family interference throws everything off balance.

Nick had a hunch that Roxanne would prove a smash-hit contestant. But he's taken aback by her beauty, poise and his desire to partner with her off the dance floor. Watching her confidence and skill soar each week is a thrill. But as Roxanne's chaotic past resurfaces and a secret threatens to tear his own family apart, both must weigh old loyalties against the promise of a brilliant future together.

I picked this up after J.M. Jeffries won the 2018 Emma Award for "Best Contemporary Romance" and I wasn't disappointed. Roxanne is a former child star who is happy with her post-actress life as a genealogist who helps people track down their family trees. When she plays a bit part on a TV drama, she realizes that she misses acting, but doesn't want to go fully into the spotlight again--instead, she is convinced to join a reality TV competition that resembles "Dancing with the Stars".

Enter Nick, a celebrated dancer and her chosen partner who is the heaviest-hitting dance talent on the show. Though their attraction is instant, Nick initially resists acting on his feelings for Roxanne given his own wise "never date your partner" rule. When he becomes unwittingly involved in Roxanne's messy family life (Roxanne's truly awful stage parents embezzled money from her when she was a kid and now want Roxanne back in their fold), he becomes her advocate in helping her fight off their repeated attempts to squeeze back into her life.

If you like strong heroines, this is a solid read. Nick is a sexy hero who falls short of rescuing her (which she doesn't need--Roxanne is fully capable of rescuing herself). It's a nice, easy romance that serves up a hero who is (for me) the very best kind of partner--the kind who stands beside his woman so that she can shine.

This book also has some really good sub-plots--a grandmother who steals the show and some really great threads of genealogy. At one point, Roxanne is helping Nick dig back into his own family's past. In many ways, this is a romance about families and secrets and those left behind forging ahead on their own paths regardless of the legacies they've inherited. Five stars--a wonderful book!!

This story made me thankful for the parents who raised us, and grateful that their was not a price tag on the love they gave to my siblings and me. Secondary characters Donna and Nick were on point. The study of genealogy has peaked my interest.

Passions Love

I love the storyline. Dance scenes were funny as well sensual. The parent were what nice word could not describe them. This was an exciting read. Yes, I would let my reading circle know about this great story.

Loved it! Roxanne and Nick are a breath of fresh air. They are creative, passionate and present a United front. I laughed, got angry at her parents and was so glad she had Grandma Donna as a support system.
