Rangers of Laerean #3

The Shadow of Narwyrm

Rate this book
Baric has already failed once to stop the horror of the dragon, Doomrage, who continues his attacks against the people of Hir from the realm of shadows. Baric and his new found companion, Ramura, the Lord of the Lions, must journey to find an artifact of great power created by an ancient race from a previous era of Hir.

Still hoping to save the soul of his lost love, Whisper, from the monster's shadowy prison, Baric doesn't realize that Doomrage now has full control and has sent Whisper's simulacrum to slay the very man in whom she once placed her hope, and the deadly assassin now tracks the Rangers on their quest to find the ancient relic they need to defeat the equally ancient dragon.

The world of Hir now stands on the brink of war with the demonic Manenase and their massive horde of Morok minions. The armies of the civilized races of Hir come together and gather to meet this threat from the Great Divide, as Baric, Ramura and the Zumarian, Sainsha, journey to the haunted Ghost Swamp to find the lost Amulet of Thiranor, which holds the key to stopping Doomrage, once and for all.

In the epic conclusion to the Shadows Trilogy of the Rangers of Laerean series, much lore from the ancient past is learned, and the history of the ancient magical creatures known as the Mythica is discovered, while the shadow of the great Dragon Spirit, Narwyrm, looms over them all.

Early in his life, Tom Fallwell discovered a love for the wonderful escape into realms undreamed of through books of Fantasy and Science-Fiction. Weaned on greats like J.R.R. Tolkien, Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, Robert E. Howard, Roger Zelazny, Robert A. Heinlein, and Michael Moorcock, to name a few, Tom's imagination was forever inspired by those marvelous tales.

One day, he discovered a simple book of medieval battle rules called Chainmail, by Gary Gygax, and found a new love. The love of creating adventures and stories of his own for other players to experience. Chainmail evolved into Dungeons & Dragons, and Tom played consistently with friends as both a player and a dungeon master (DM). Such activities fueled his desire to create worlds and stories from his own imagination.

Now retired after a long career as a software developer, Tom now writes about all the adventures and characters that constantly fill his mind, and gleefully shares them with the world.

Baric, the Rangers, and their allies, all have to come together to stop the Mananese army that threatens to wash over the world and destroy all that's good.

I won a copy of this book when it was released.
This is the third and final part of Rangers of Laerean trilogy (well, of the Shadow books - I'm guessing Laerean has a lot more to give). And when the story ended, I felt that little pang of sadness that it was all over; which is always a sign of a good series.

I have to say that the second book - Where Shadows Fall - has been my favourite out of the trilogy. It was such a strong adventure, with the heroes finding their place; and a really awesome enemy. The fact that the bad guys could pop up anywhere and frame the heroes for murder and dissent...
The start of The Shadow of Narwyrm follows on, that most of the nations are on shaky ground, but starting to reunite. Unfortunately, this means that the first half of this book lacks the angst and danger I found in book two.

The Rangers, the King of Laerean and many other interesting characters set out on different paths to prepare for the coming battle, and to secure a way to defeat Doomrage, the immortal dragon that only exists in shadow and fire. Baric and Ramura head off on a quest to find an item that can aid them. And Sainsha... well, she's just awesome. I was so happy to see how her part has grown since her introduction in the second book.

The ending was perfect, it wrapped everything up nicely, whilst still leaving enough threads open that Fallwell can return to his Laerean stories in future.

The Shadow of Narwyrm is the third book in the series the Rangers of Laerean.
I loved the three books and the last one of Baric's quest against Doomrage, the dragon of shadows and fire, is the best of them.
The glorious end is the war against the dragon and his followers.
Death of crucial characters made me sigh. The game of thrones created in me that feeling. Bad things always happen to good people.
What I did not remember was the incredible ability Tom Fallwell has to twist the worst events into a thing of beauty. He did not disappoint me.
But that was close.
Creativity and lots of close calls make the book impossible to drop.
Yes, I have a book hangover after reading throughout the night.
But a girl does what a girl has to do.
The war scenes take you to the heart of the battle and you can hear the drums and the cries of the soldiers.
Doomrage is the enemy a hero must have as he causes suffering and losses to make the brave rangers even more amazing.
The dragon's change of form and name fits the situation. Magic pushes the events into fast pace throughout the series.
The peoples of Hir gather to fight the common enemy.
Once again, good surpasses evil.
I want to follow Baric, Wolf, Sainsha and all the other endearing characters in the following books. I hope the next enemy can help them show out their lovable personalities.
And lots of magic.

I've never been one to read a lot of fantasy, but when I came across this book, the blurb enticed me enough to make me want to give it a read. Normally with series books I would read them in order, and I was a little worried that I would find I was missing important information, but while there is backstory in the previous books the book itself stands somewhat alone. Any important information needed is included, which is a big plus. I enjoyed the book and found myself transported to the mythical place of Hir where wondrous characters are fighting to save their home, their lives and the lives of the creatures and people around them. The rangers of Laerean are ones to be admired and sought after. The book had me hooked from the first chapter and I settled myself in to read it almost in one sitting! It was beautifully crafted and allowed me to lose myself in the pages. Very much enjoyed!

Baric and company are overshadowed by the great Dragon Spirit. The olden days is filled with abundant wisdom, and the Amulet of Thiranor has something crucial to halting Doomrage. Into the sinister Ghost Swamp Baric and his pals venture to find a lost charm. The Shadow of Narwyrm is the 3rd book in the Rangers of Laerean series. Author Fallwell has done a great job creating characters that are vividly real and relatable. Magic thrusts action into gear in this wild ride series. Loaded with twists and turns, the enchanting plot will keep the reader keenly intrigued. Written with much thought in the details this story is a must for fantasy buffs.

Wow, what an ending to the series!
This book is full of action, new and important characters, and wraps up the series brilliantly.
We get to see the Mythica in action, on the side of good and evil.
Its a great read, the crown jewel of the series.

Bravo!

Again Mr. Fallwell has gone above and beyond my expectations. His characters are truly brought to life. I can visualise them and their attitudes. I am glad to see that the trilogy has ended with maybe more ahead for the Rangers and their world. Way to go Tom Fallwell! Bravo!
