The new aesthetic that arrived with the XXth century carried music, along with all branches of art. Turkish composers too, created examples of the new music of age, beginning in 1920's. They combined their voices of the new universal methods and merged their heritage with sounds of the age. The first generations followed the pioneering movements of the time and, taking traditional Turkish music as a starting point, enthusiastically shaped Turkey's new music by not only composing but also teaching and conducting. The generations that followed resonated traditional melodies in between the lines as well as abstracting the general direction of music. Today, young generations now count amongst the universals, just as in many other lands, with their works recorded on CD's and played everywhere. Evin Ilyasoglu reaches from the vanguard of contemporary Turkish composers through the youngest generation. "71 Turkish Composers", published bilingually in Turkish and English, covers the composers' biographies, lists of works and discographies. This is a comprehensive reference book on contemporary Turkey researchers, interpreters, concert-hall managers and music students as much as those not immediately connected with music.

About the author

İstanbul’da doğdu. Yedi yaşında Marie Çobangil ile piyano çalmaya başladı. 1957-1963 yılları arasında İstanbul Belediye Konservatuvarı piyano bölümünde okudu. Özen Veziroğlu, Şerif Yüzbaşıoğlu, Raşit Abet ve Ferdi Ştatzer’in öğrencileri oldu. 1966’da Robert Kolej’den mezun oldu. 1969-1971 arasında A.B.D.Michigan Devlet Üniversitesi’nde Müzik Eleştirisi ve Karşılaştırmalı Müzik Tarihi seminerlerine katıldı.

1973-1991 arasında TRT Radyo’sunda; 1982-1996 arasında TRT televizyonunda Klasik Batı Müziği programları hazırlayıp sundu. Yurt içinde ve dışında birçok dergi, gazete ve ansiklopedide eleştiri, inceleme ve söyleşileri yayımlandı, konferanslar verdi. 1993-1997 arasında Marmara Üniversitesi İletişim Fakültesi Radyo Televizyon Bülümünde öğretim görevlisi oldu. 1997 Habitat II kapsamında Istanbul’un Sesleri sergisini hazırladı. 1987’den bu yana Boğaziçi Üniversitesi’nde öğretim görevlisi ve Albert Long Hall Konserleri’nin organizatörüdür. 1991’den bu yana Cumhuriyet gazetesinin sürekli müzik yazarıdır.
