Clove Winchester is feeling lucky at life, and that’s before a mysterious stranger drops into her magic store and gifts her with a special coin. Suddenly things can’t go wrong for Clove, and she’s the center of attention in the Winchesters’ world – especially because Aunt Tillie wants that coin. When a near-death experience rocks Clove and her boyfriend Sam, Clove takes a closer look at the coin and realizes there’s a lot she can do with her new luck streak. Unfortunately for Aunt Tillie, Clove is determined to keep the benefits to herself. When a brazen armed robber hits Hemlock Cove and goes after Bay, all of the Winchester witches band together to solve the crime and save the day. Of course, they may need a little luck to do it.
Note: This is a 28,000-word short in the Wicked Witches of the Midwest world. It is set after The Trouble With Witches in the timeline.
When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail. Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.
I love these shorts. I can never get enough of them. Though I do agree out of all of the cousins, Clover is my least favorite. Such a 'kvetch'. Ha ha ha ha
Clove has a wonderful life; she is in love and enjoying all the good things life is throwing at her. While working in her shop one day, a stranger drops by and after a brief discussion gives Clove a lucky coin. Not thinking anything of it other than a nice gesture, she deposits the coin in a pocket and carries on with her day. It doesn’t take long for her to begin to believe in the power of the lucky coin. She feels as if nothing can go wrong as long as she has the coin in her possession. When a storm blows in and sweeps her off a dock into the water, she thinks it will be her last moments on earth. Pressing her hand against her leg, she feels the coin wishing her boyfriend would come to save her. Suddenly, Sam appears out of nowhere, reaches down and pulls her from the water.
Clove knows her luck has changed and begins thinking of ways she can use the lucky coin without getting hurt or hurting anyone else. Unfortunately, Aunt Tillie finds out about the coin and demands Clove turn it over to her. Clove refuses, likening the coin to the “Precious” in the Lord of the Rings stories.
After several reports of an armed robber running around town, and Clove having accidentally on purpose bumped into the culprit, the family decides they have to catch the thief before someone gets hurt. Is the robber local, or a stranger just passing through? Why does Clove get a distinct feeling that she knows who it is?
__
Clove is a lot like her cousins, yet she is a bit more stable than the other two. Her aversion to getting involved in anything that might get nasty or dangerous is understandable, but her need to be in on the action will always overrule her logic. Having run into an armed robber and almost getting hurt saved only by her lucky coin, Clove goes along with her cousins, and plots to lay a trap to catch the thief.
Clove is not happy about trying to nab the thief in the middle of her Aunt Tillie's “special” field, but as usual, she goes along with the plan and hopes no one gets hurt. She becomes even less happy when Aunt Tillie shows up with a loaded gun, and Thistle and bay let her keep it.
This short gives us an inside look into the least known Winchester cousin, Clove and adds to her overall character. The dialogue is humorous and easily relatable. The banter between the cousins, as well as all of the cast of characters, is interesting and lively. This story is a short but felt like it could easily have become another book in the series. The setting is fun and filled with possibilities. The story is smooth and fast paced without being mired down in descriptiveness that is unnecessary.
The Winchester Witches are very much your ordinary family with the twist of being witches added. They laugh, play, fight and get on each other's nerves, just like any close family will. Exceptions, however, come up whenever one of them is in trouble, or in need of genuine support. They would go to the ends of the earth and beyond to help someone they love. A bit hidden at times but always on the edge of the inevitable mischief and mayhem, they care for each other and are willing to sacrifice anything to help when trouble brews. All of the characters are aggravating to one degree or another, intelligent, gifted, egotistical and at the center of it all, loving. They are the relatives we love to hate and will defend to the end.
It would be advisable for anyone who wants to read this short to start with the original books in the series. These are not stand alone books or shorts, and if this is the first story a reader picks up, they will be confused and frustrated by not knowing the characters or the circumstance surrounding the situations they get dragged into. However, that said this short, much like the others that are in the series was enjoyable and easy to read.
mexicoturtle@comcast.net I am writing this review because this book is a shorter version of her other books, yet still has all of the love and snark that we have come to expect from a Bay Winchester book. I just love the author Amanda M. Lee this book deals with the girls waiting for Landon to come home from work in Traverse City. He had to stay two weeks later than usual. Bay was so sad and bummed out about it that the other two were getting worried about her. Clover gets a lucky coin and a robber is in town. What kind of mischief can the the 3 witches and aunt Tilly get into? -
We’re real witches pretending to be normal humans pretending to be fake witches. This was the description of the hilarious group of characters opening this short story. I don’t usually rate short stories very high but this one had me laughing out loud. When the Hoodie Bandit aka the Masked Marauder wreaks havoc on the small town of Hemlock Cove, cousins Thistle, Bay and Clover along with the eccentric and hilarious Aunt Tilly set out to solve the mystery. They catch up to the robber in the end with a scooby-dooesque reveal. While the ending was somewhat predictable, the antics of this crazy and loveable group kept me turning the pages and giggling throughout.
Clove is the most mild mannered of the trio of Winchester witch cousins. I like the snarky humor and dialogue. I found it interesting have the story told from Clove's point of view. I found it funny that Aunt Tillie is dodging a fan club who believe she is a powerful witch and want to see demonstrations of her spells. I will be reading the other books in the series.
This one's told from Clover's viewpoint. A Madam Rosa comes into town, claiming to be a psychic. Then there's a 'hoodie bandit' who tries to rob the bank and who commits other robberies including a break-in at Bay's newspaper office. The situation gets very personal with Clover making a rather unwise decision.
The situation gets bad enough that Landon has to become involved.
In general, I don’t enjoy the short stories as much as the regular novels, but I liked this one the best of the shorts. Not sure why, but it kept my interest very well and I read it quickly. I even bought some bacon and I intend to try the billionaires bacon recipe from I think Snoop Dogg.it looks really good, with a little bit of crushed red pepper and brown sugar and so on.
This is an enjoyable short. Clove gets to tell a story from her point of view this time. I can't give a half star so I rounded up to four stars this time. I'll admit that this wasn't the best of the WWotMW shorts, but it's pretty good. With all the troubles and uncertainty in the world these days... these stories are absolutely great escapes.
I loved this book. It was completely different than anything I have ever read. It was funny . Aunt Tillie is a hoot. I will be reading more of your books. I would recommend your books to anyone who wants to read something that is out of the ordinary.
You have written a lot of books, and it won't be hard to find something I like. I just can't write about them.
This book is told from Clove's perspective. Clove is given a good luck coin and hoodie wearing thief stalks the town. She definitely has a unique look on life. The story and characters were intriguing and engaging. I look forward to reading more about these characters and their further adventures. This book is definitely worth reading.
Clove's POV. Someone claiming to be psychic gives Clove a supposedly lucky coin. There are a couple of robberies. The cousins and Aunt Tillie need to figure it all out. Lighte, good fun in a short read. These short books are just right for times when I don't have time to get deep into a longer story.
This short story is told by Clove and includes the cousins and Aunt Tillie, but shows how big a heart Clove has. Chief Terry and Landon make an appearance, but not the moms. There is humor, arguing, love, charity, a mystery involving a thief, but no murders. Highly recommend
This was a cute little short told from Clove's point of view.
I have to say the author's writing from each character's point of view is pretty good. I don't feel like I am reading the story from the same character so kudos for that.
Same M.O. though, solved a crime and saved the day - lol
I’m still waiting for the announcement that this is the next Witch TV show! I just love these books! I look forward to laughing and crying and waking hubby because I cannot control it.
Maybe it's because I'm so used to them ragging on her and calling her a Kvetch but for some reason I really don't like Clove. I prefer the regular books where the perspective is from Bay.
I think that was the best line in the book!! The line before it was the funniest! Like Marcus, Clove seems to be the quietest. I love these shorts and getting a look at everything from a different viewpoint.
Love this author! Everything I have read by her do far has been very good. Her characters are believable and very well fleshed out. Their stories all flow. Great read!
A peek into Clove’s point of view with a fun twist of luck! When a stranger comes to town claiming to be a psychic, Clove is given a good luck charm. Is it real? Is Madam Rosa real? Enjoy this read
It was a great book. I was captivated from the beginning. There were a few twists in the book that I felt took it in a totally new yet amusing direction.
