georges duby ve michelle perrot’nün rehberliğinde çıktığım bu yolculuk bir kadının tarih boyunca nasıl şekillendirildiğini, nasıl sınırlara hapsedildiğini ve bu sınırlara rağmen nasıl direndiğini anlamaya çalıştığım bir hikâyeydi benim için. okurken zaman zaman büyülendim, zaman zamansa bir kadın olarak sinirlerime hakim olamadım (özellikle antik yunanistan'da evlilik ve eski roma'da beden siyaseti bölümlerinde).
antik yunan'da evlilik; sevginin, eşitliğin ve birey olmanın yok sayıldığı bir kurumu okurken hissettiğim şey öfkeydi. kadınların yalnızca soyun devamı için değerli görülmesi ve eş olmanın neredeyse bir mülkiyet ilişkisine indirgenmesi.. bu hikâyeler geçmişte kalmış gibi dursa da, izleri hâlâ bizimle. günlük hayatın içinde bazen fark etmeden bile olsa karşılaşıyoruz.
sonra antik roma’ya geldim. bedenin bir bireyin değil, toplumun ve devletin bir aracı haline geldiği o bölümler; doğum yapan bir kadının yalnızca ailesini değil, devleti beslediği fikri.. kadın bedeninin bu kadar politik, bu kadar denetlenebilir olduğu ve zamanın nasıl farklı biçimlerle de olsa aynı hikâyeyi yazmaya devam ettiğini düşündüm. bu noktada insan üzülüyor çünkü kadınların bu sistematik baskılar karşısında nasıl sessizleştirildiğini maalesef görüyorum/okuyorum.

January 15, 2019I've been stuck on this for more than two years now and I'm giving up. It's so tough to get through. The introduction does make a point of saying that this is a very 'academic' book, but as someone in academia I'd like to point out that that isn't an excuse for bad writing.
I really wanted to like this, I did. or at least learn from it. I can't say I did either.
I admire what an endevor this series was when it was publishes, and that the editor makes a point of recognizing that this is a compilation white women's history and that that isn't the universal female experience. After that it just goes downhill. It isn't exiting to read in any way - it doesn't make you wonder or appeal to your curiosity in any way, rather it feels like a chore. Because it is divided by subject matter before chronology, we get a messy mix of Roman and Greek features. There's no sense to the division of the themes either, it seems like everything is just in random order, and it just comes off as a mess. Every chapter I read could be used as an example of what is bad about academic writing; It's abstract, it's pretentious, it's self-contradictory, it assumes the reader has knowledge about niche subjects, it dances around pointsand uses up to much space and then complains about not having enough space.
I got about halfway through the book, which means about 4.5 chapters in, and just because it's an anthology I'm gonna make a few remarks about each author:
1. What is a goddess by Nicole Leroux
Loraux makes a lot of really good and interesting observations, but at times get too vague when discussing abstract ideas. It's clearly written as an academic text where she assumes the reader has knowledge of her field, and analyzes rather that inform. She's at her best when she gets concrete. At times her meta seems out of sync with the text, and often it seems unnecessary and sometimes repetitive. She also writes several times that she needs more space and describes what she wanted to do with that space - maybe she ought to have used that space for something different instead of telling us what she's NOT gonna do?
2. The Sexual Philosophies of Plato and Aristotle by Giulia Sissa
Sissa's chapter was, exactly as the title suggests, about the philosophies of Greek thinkers. It seemed more like a discussion of terminology and theories of selected philosophers than it was women's history, yanno, actually about Greek women. Once again it seems a prerequisite that you have knowledge of the subject. You have to know of each philosopher's works in order to follow most of her discussion. Some pretentious word-choices, som iffy sources and points.
3. The Division of the Sexes in Roman Law by Yan Thomas
I had a looot of problems with this chapter, and like the one before I'm not totally sure it was best this anthology could get. There's also some reeeeally iffy points and the author seems to have a lack of understanding of a lot of things e.g. sociology, how to judge sources, the patriarchy and how gendered oppression works, and seems to argue more for their own perspectives rather than writing women's history. The first 10 or so pages are all about men exclusively because the author thinks that is necessary to go beyond "the usual assertions" of Roman misogyny (spoiler: It's not, it adds nothing), so not off to a great start. It gets contradictory at times and there sooo much repetition. Left a bad taste in my mouth and the fact that it was included made me doubt this anthology.
4. Figures of Women by Francois Lissarrague
This felt like such a filler chapter. It was incredibly superficial and consisted solely of diescriptions of pottery with next to no analyses. A lot of times I was looking for a point that just never came. It was incredibly repetitive.
5. Marriage in Ancient Greece by Claudine Leduc
I've read half this chapter and can say absolutely nothing about it which gotta say something.

Hoy finalicé el primer tomo de “Historia de las mujeres” que hacía un año aproximadamente venía leyendo. El libro cuenta con 643 páginas que desentrañan los distintos roles de las mujeres de la antigüedad en diferentes ámbitos de la vida pública y privada, su presencia en mitos, en el derecho romano y las diosas existentes con su diferentes representaciones.
Este es el primero de 5 volúmenes que pueden adquirirse juntos en un estuche (los vi individuales en BuscaLibre, pero ni conviene comprarlos por separado) y cuenta con la dirección de dos importantes historiadores, el medievalista Georges Duby asociado a la escuela de los Annales y la especialista en historia de las mujeres Michelle Perrot. Ambos le dan forma a las distintas temáticas y visiones que desarrollan distintxs historiadores especializadxs.
En relación a lo que me pareció este libro, la verdad que me ha gustado mucho. Es cierto que a veces se hace un poco cuesta arriba ya que es un libro más para estudio que para una lectura “ligera”. En ciertos momentos, abundan los detalles y las descripciones que, si uno no cuenta con un conocimiento previo, se vuelve la lectura lenta porque implica investigar por otros medios.
Entonces, en este pequeño comentario sobre el libro puedo decir que lo recomiendo, pero más que nada para quienes quieren realmente profundizar sus conocimientos sobre la presencia de la mujer a lo largo de la historia (este tomo habla principalmente sobre Grecia y Roma) y sobre los estudios que fueron abordando esta temática. Es super interesante y es un libro para toda la vida.

El llibre es bo i interessant, però com que havia de fer-ne un treball en grup que teniem pel 22 de desembre (que ja sabiem que haviem de fer des del dia 14 de setembre i que, evidentment, hem acabat fent la setmana abans) he acabat tenint uns setniments barrejats envers aquest. Tot i això, el llibre aporta visions molt importants a la perspectiva de gènere i a la història de la dona. Molt recomenable si t'interessa el tema, ja que és un dels pioneers en la història "del gènere oblidat".

Un volume pioneristico, che ha gettato le basi per lo studio della storia delle donne, soggetti molto spesso dimenticati dalla Storia. Le varie studiose e i vari studiosi approfondiscono molti aspetti legati alla donna, come il concetto di "dea" nell'antica Grecia, le raffigurazioni femminili nella ceramica, l'aspetto religioso e giuridico del matrimonio in Grecia e a Roma, lo spazio sociale delle donne, il loro ruolo nelle prime comunità cristiane.
Un libro illuminante, che ha aperto la strada agli studi di genere (ancora oggi in via di sviluppo e spesso trascurati) e che ha dato una dignità non solo storica alla vita e alla storia delle donne del passato.

L’Histoire des femmes en Occident, herausgegeben von der Historikerin Michelle Perrot (geboren 1928) und dem Mediävisten Georges Duby (1919 - 1996), ist eine bahnbrechende fünfbändige Untersuchung der weiblichen Erfahrung in der westlichen Welt. Leitend für diese Reihe, die 1991/92 erschien, ist die provokante Frage: Les femmes ont-elles une histoire ? und antwortet mit einer beeindruckenden thematischen Breite. Von Sexualität und Medizin über das Matriarchat, Hexenverfolgungen und feministische Presse bis hin zu Architektur, Film und Linguistik – die Reihe beleuchtet, wie Frauen nicht nur in politischen, wirtschaftlichen und intellektuellen Sphären agierten, sondern auch, wie ihre Geschichten verdrängt, verzerrt oder unsichtbar gemacht wurden. Este es el primer libro de una colección fantástica de 5 libros sobre la historia de las mujeres de occidente, considerando que se parte desde la edad antigua europea.
Cada uno de los 5 libros es relativamente voluminoso (el más pequeño de ellos, el tomo 2, tiene 640 páginas), y en lo personal he encontrado de gran ayuda adicionar al formato físico el formato de audio.
Para entender la historia no solo hacen falta los hitos "grandes" que demarcan los libros tradicionales de historia. En realidad, es imperativo revisar los detalles legales, sociales, y en particular el impacto de la "mitología religionaria", sea poli o mono que define el desenvolvimiento de la vida legal primero, la privada luego, y la social finalmente. De allí parte todo lo demás.
En otras palabras, esta es la colección de libros que le dan contexto local occidental a la historia poniendo como centro de ese círculo a la mujer.
Este libro está lleno de maravilla información que puede servir de referencia a otros estudios, o como deleite intelectual como es mi caso: entender a la mujer en un contexto patriarcal-machista-misógino occidental, y a su vez entender mejor los orígenes de esos comportamientos.
Excelente primer "lectura/auditura", llena de información escondida a la historia tradicional acostumbrada, y a su vez tan inesperada y enriquecedora.

Se siente feo ponerle tan poquito después de echarse tantos cientos de páginas, pero la verdad es que deja mucho que desear. La intención de la edición es muy interesante pero evidentemente nadie se dió a la tarea de integrar el volumen de manera apropiada y al final quedó una colección de ensayos de diferentes autores, que se pisan unos a los otros, en donde la calidad varía muchísimo entre texto y texto, varios de ellos con un abominable tono académico, no por complicado sino más bien por ser un vómito interminable de términos y esnobismo (por demás famoso entre los escritores franceses jaja). Aún así hubo varias partes del libro que disfruté, datos curiosos de la vida diaria en las ciudades de Atenas y Roma, simbolismos y significados de lo femenino en los mitos y en el arte, y es verdad que tiene cosas muy interesantes si se pone uno a leer con paciencia de santo. No lo volvería a leer pero admito que aprendí mucho de él. Ahora finalmente a pasar página a textos mejor escritos :)

Aslında oturup tek seferde okunabilecek bir kitap (elektronik ortamdan). Lakin 500 küsür sayfa olması ve bir çok konu başlıkları sebebiyle ben, ansiklopedi gibi kullanmayı tercih ettim. Bir ödevim sayesinde kitap serisiyle tanıştım, itiraf etmeliyim tüm başlıklar bitmedi fakat çoğunu okudum. Bu bile yeterli geldi. Merak ettiğiniz her şey kitapta var. Diğer ciltlerine de göz gezdirdim ama okumadım. Kesinlikle okuyacağım. Kadının tarihteki konumunu anlatan bir kitap. Antik yunan filozoflarından başlıyor, roma hukuku, evlilik vb çoğu kavramı açıklayarak anlatıyor. Feminizmle ilgili yazılarda kaynak olarak kullanılmaya uygun nitelikte. Çevirisinde sıkıntı yaşamadım, gayet temiz bir dili vardı çevirmenin. Herkese şiddetle tavsiye ederim, kitaplıkta bulundurulası kitaplardan.

Il primo volume di questa indagine storica sulla donna dall’antica Grecia ai giorni nostri contiene non solamente interessantissimi spunti di riflessione, ma è anche un viaggio ricco e profondo nel ruolo della donna non solo dal punto di vista sociale ma anche letterario, giuridico ed economico.
Una lettura sicuramente impegnativa ma estremamente consigliata!
