Loved this book! This was a departure from the type of series Georgeson wrote last time and she slayed in this dystopia/paranormal book!
Gabe is imprisoned in a hole in the ground. And was so by his own brother, so he has absolutely no feelings after 10 years of being exiled by the same man toward family and that includes his sister-in-law, Claire. She, after all, is the reason for this. So why he came to warn them about the slaughter he can hear happening up above before it got there only to be thrown into this hole, he doesn't know but take anything left of his humanity away.
Claire has a daughter and in order to save her daughter she will do what is necessary, no matter how difficult it is. So when the men came to raid the compound she had her daughter hide in the pantry until safe. Then told her to go free "honest Gabe" and he would take care of her and keep her safe. She promises to come find her.
When this little kid, little girl tries to free Gabe and she tells him her mother told her to do so. He is having a hard time. He and she have this long negotiation about whether she should really let him out. He wonders how long until he can be rid of her. But she is brave and loyal and little by little she maybe brings some humanity back.
Through some of the worst conditions with rippers chasing them and a friendly jackal named Jack, Gabe and Claire's child journey to his home. A man with a wooden foot, who just met his niece from a lying Claire. Will they make it back or will they die? Will Claire come find her, it's her daddy really dead? Will Uncle Gabe like her enough to keep her around?
A story of extreme hardship, with an amazing intellect of people who fight to survive in Africa after asteroids take out the world as we know it. With something supernatural involved. Will a family find their way back to each other?
This is an amazing story you will feel drawn into and find it very difficult to put down.

I enjoyed reading this book. I thought it was very action packed and just a little weird ( i LIKE WEIRD , don't You ? ) . There is a huge mystery on the horizon , and I need to know what the deal is :)) Gabe and Claire are two people drawn unwittingly into a love at 1st right situation, except that she is already involved with his brother ! The end of the world comes in the form of an asteroid \meteor shower , and miracle of miracles, the three of them survive along with a handful of others . As it happens , Gabe is an architect, and understands how to build things , and soon their colony, Aftermath, is thriving with all sorts of misplaced people. Dave's brother Ethan , is an archaeologist , and , not far from his "dig" ( where he spends almost all of his time ) ,is the remanents of one of the impact craters.. Ethan finds , "something incredible" , but we never find out what that is. Ethan plots to exile his brother, after seeing the looks Gabe and Claire exchange when they think no one is looking. After almost 10years alone , out in the unforgiving savannah, with nothing but the clothes in his back and his wife and knowledge, Gabe risks life and limb to warn his former colony of impending danger. And he gets thrown into the dungeon!!! What follows is one trial after another . One revelation after another. One narrow escape,, after another ,and this story will keep you in your TOES !!! I was totally enthralled, and an anxious to find out what happens NEXT !!
I really enjoyed it, the story hooked me from the beginning and I read it in two days. I did find a few things annoying, but they made me feel something and that’s more important than the annoyance. Gabe’s stubbornness irritated me to no end and the back and forth between Gabe and Claire was the most annoying, but it was a sweet, action packed story with lots of details. The whole story took place over the course of just a few weeks if my mind is correct. Definitely one I will recommend to anyone looking for a dystopian/fantasy story.

Wish I could of finished in two day. Keeps you wanting to read more. Not anything that I expected. I know it is considered a romance novel but with supernatural twists. Cannot wait to read book 2, Drifter, to see what happens.
