Is dit nu de islam?
"Is dit nu de islam?", vragen mensen. Die terroristen die onschuldigen doden: zijn zij de islam? Zijn het de sjiieten van het Assad-regime of de soennieten van de Syriche 'rebellen'? OF zijn het de miljoenen moslims die in vrede met elkaar en met andersgelovigen of niet-gelovigen (willen) leven?
Khalid Benhaddou is de verpersoonlijking van de ‘rationele islam’, een moderne islam die de westerse democratische regels en de Europese verlichtingswaarden wil verzoenen met de wijsheid van de Koran. Met dat ideaal werkt hij als imam in Gent en als coördinator van het Netwerk Islamexperten dat, in samenwerking met het departement Onderwijs, de radicalisering van moslimjongeren in Vlaanderen tegengaat.
In dit boek vertelt hij hoe de Koran echt moet worden gelezen en niet letterlijk maar wel in zijn historische context moet worden begrepen. Hij spreekt over de extreme islam en zijn terroristische uitwassen en hoe je die concreet kan bestrijden. Hoe je jongeren weg kan houden van radicalisering. En hij houdt een warm pleidooi voor een ‘mondiale verlichting van de islam’, where east meets west.

Khalid Benhaddou is imam in the Flemish city of Ghent, and was previously also associated with the Great Mosque in Brussels, before it fell into Salafist hands. In this book he argues for a peaceful, 'rational' Islam, as an alternative to the extremist, often violent forms of Islam that have been in the spotlight lately. Benhaddou gives all sorts of tips to deal with radicalization, from his own experience.
His message is primarily addressed to Muslims themselves. They must make space again for critical thinking, do the effort to get to know the Western culture better and value it, and therefore integrate reason and science in their religious experience. He thinks that there are sufficient leads for both in the Quran and the Islamic tradition.
But Benhaddou also points out to non-Muslims: they have to stop the culture of fear against everything that has to do with Islam, and they also have to dismantle the mechanisms of social, economic, political and cultural exclusion. Especially with regard to education (his own expertise), but also housing and the labor market, there is a lot of work to be done to get Muslims out of the marginalism in our society and turn them into full citizens.
I think it's good that Benhaddou places so much emphasis on dialogue and openness, on both sides, and on the empowerment of the Muslim communities themselves, because a unilaterally imposed European/Enlightened/moderate Islam will never catch on. And also that he makes an ardent plea for the place of religion within the public domain, also in a secular society, and of course, with full respect for the legal framework that exists here.
Personally, I find the term ‘rational’ Islam rather unfortunate, because religions have little to do with reason (and I mean that positively), but everything with intuitions about how reality works. Anyway, that might be a semantic discussion. In his apology for what Islam really stands for, contrary to what extremists claim, Benhaddou perhaps uses a too rough brush. And he seems to minimize certain practices, especially the discrimination against women - which incidentally is inherent to all existing religions. His book could also have used a little more editing, because his rhetoric is quite jumpy, he repeats himself often and sometimes exaggerates in name-dropping, with abundant references to Western thinkers such as Popper, Foucault and Bourdieu. But despite these imperfections, this is a positive voice, hopefully a starting point on which to build on.

Ik had even moeite om erin te komen , maar een duidelijke inleiding in de islam en de hedendaagse mee gepaarde uitdagingen. Ik wist al een heleboel door kennisen en de boeken van Kader Abdollah maar toch nog wat dingen bijgeleerd. Een boek die aanzet tot denken...

Khalid Benhaddou is een Gentse imam van Marokkaanse afkomst. Hij heeft zixh de afgelopen jaren geout als een verzoener, een bruggenbouwer. Zo las ik eerder "Verdwaald in Verlichting", waarin hij in gesprek gaat met atheïst Patrick Loobuyk.
In dit boek uit 2016 probeert hij een antwoord te bieden op de vraag uit de titel, nadat talrijke aanslagen in Europa en ook in ons land (22 maart 2016, op Zaventem en Maelbeek) de islam in een slecht daglicht plaatsten. Daarom begint hij met een inleiding op de islam, de vele gezichten van deze godsdienst sinds het ontstaan in de zevende eeuw. Hij spreekt zich uit voor wat hij een rationele islam noemt. Hij houdt niet van de termen Europese of gematigde islam en meent te kunnen vaststellen dat er een traditionele rationele lijn in de islam is. Zo schrijft hij over de periode dat moslims een grote bijdrage leverden aan filosofie en wetenschap.
Verder heeft hij een groot hoofdstuk over radicalisering en meer bepaald de mogelijkheden en moeilijkheden van deradicalisering. Hijzelf probeert in de praktijk, onder meer met lessen in het onderwijs, bij te dragen tot die deradicalisering. Verder toont Khalid Benhaddou zich een voorstander van een lezing van de Koran in zijn historische context.
Dit boek is ongetwijfeld goed bedoeld en de auteur is een modern en gematigd man. Toch zijn kritieken mogelijk, onder meer omdat hij met zijn schets van de islam een aantal problematische aspecten uit de weg gaat. Mochten bovendien alle moslims even gematigd zijn als Benhaddou, dan zou er geen probleem van radicalisering zijn. Jammer genoeg is dat niet het geval, getuige nog de meer recente terroristische aanvallen uit islamitische hoek. Er is nog veel werk aan de winkel!

Interessante en hoopvolle visie van Benhaddou op een ander soort islam, een Europese, rationele en verzoenende islam. Fingers crossed!
