A young treasure diving couple is sadistically murdered in the back country of the Florida Keys—and Jesse McDermitt's friend is the prime suspect. The reclusive federal agent and former combat Marine launches his own investigation in the face of overwhelming evidence. McDermitt is certain of his friend’s innocence. When a third victim's body is discovered lodged among the mangrove roots on Knockemdown Key, the race to stop a serial killer begins. The beautiful Detective Devon Evans will do anything to apprehend the killer before he claims another victim. With shifting political winds, McDermitt and his friends must improvise and adapt to the ever-changing tide. There’s more than meets the eye in this tenth novel in the Jesse McDermitt series!
I'm a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps and now, a full time novelist. Between those careers, I've also worked as a deckhand, commercial fisherman, divemaster, taxi driver, construction manager, and truck driver. I live in the Sea Islands, near Beaufort, SC, with my wife and youngest daughter. We also have three grown children, five grand children, three dogs and a whole flock of parakeets. I grew up in Melbourne, FL and have also lived in the Florida Keys and Cozumel, MX.
According to the author’s comments, this is the last Jesse McDermitt Caribbean Adventure novel. But I see on his website there are a whole lot more books starring Jesse, just moving in a different direction. And that is not necessarily a bad thing.
On the whole, this is not a bad book. I’d rank it as good as the best in the series.
However, Mr. Stinnett still has work to do to make these books better.
For one thing, he still insists on telling us every time Jesse takes a boat out that he put it up on plane. He does it 16 times here, and assuming he wrote it that many times in the previous books that’s over 150 times. Again, Mr. Stinnett, We. Get. It! We don’t need to be told it every time. It’s safe for you to assume that readers will understand that every time Jesse takes one of his boats out, he’ll put it up on plane.
There are also still too many characters with too many similar names (Stinnett favors ones beginning with C and J), so many that even after 10 books, I can’t keep them straight. And I still haven’t sorted to who does and doesn’t live on his island.
And finally, he still has some continuity problems. Two people get into a car and drive off. Two pages later the same two people pull up to a warehouse and each one gets out of a separate car.
Still, I liked this tale well enough that I’ll give one of his new direction books a try.
Fallen Hero: Jesse McDermitt ( Caribbean series #10)
Jesse gets involved in helping Lawrence (the local taxi driver/owner) out of a jam against planted evidence, and in a lost treasure hunt, but in the process; Jesse and the crew incur another drug runner and murderer, the action swift and quick. Along the way, Jesse meets Devon, a local detective, former Marine, and maybe a new woman in his life. He also meets a WW II Army veteran and hero who is shot by one of the Rafferty brothers. The title comes from the individual. You'll have to read the full story to find out all the details, but you won't be disappointed.
This was a brilliant story which once again shows everyone that reads these types of books all about that part of the Florida Keys to its fullest potential, his characterization is immense and instructive. If this is his last book with Jesse then readers will be the losers for it would be lovely to think that he could in some way keep writing these books with his hero in them. If you like adventure with SF connotations and of the sea then follow the story and see where it takes you.
Pages missing in Chapter 10...several other editing mistakes.,way too much advertising of t-shirts etc..very disappointed in the author..found story just so so I expected so much more ..
I have the good fortune to read all ten of this series. Quite often after reading the third or fourth they seem to simply rehash the same characters with like-minded plots. Not this author and series.
Wayne does it, again! I so look forward to these books and am NEVER disappointed! Please, keep 'em coming!!!!! Winter 2017 can't come soon enough! Thanks for the awesome visualization of the Keys. I am looking for a place to rent there ASAP!
I've read every book in this series, Fallen Hero is #10, and have enjoyed them all immensely. I've never been to the Florida Keys and remain intrigued by Wayne Stinnett's descriptions and travels through that area. In Fallen Hero, it looks like the government agency is coming to an end and all the characters are considering joining forces and starting up a new investigation agency. Meanwhile, Jesse's friend, Lawrence, the cab driver is being charged with murder after divers in his employ are ruthlessly murdered...his cashbox and gun were located at the murder site in the keys backcountry. Everyone chips in and help in solving the case and uncovering the real murderer and motives.
Jesse also gets a new love interest, the banter and wit between characters are always enjoyable...causing one to laugh out loud at times. I am aware of the author's new series beginning soon and look forward to reading his new stories just as fast as he can spit them out. Each book in the series improves upon the preceding one and readers can watch the characters develop more in every story. I Highly recommend this series and the other books Wayne has written to date.
Another great story. I have read 10 of the 11 books in the series and continue to be impressed with Mr. Stinnett's writing skills. All of his books are well written, easy to read, and hold your attention. He has a somewhat unique writing style that is entertaining, relaxing, and engaging, all at the same time. As soon as you finish one, you immediately want to start the next. I will leave it to the other reviewers to summarize the plot line but will offer the comment that the background "color" that he provides about the Florida Keys and boating is especially engaging. I have already recommended the series to a number of friends and would recommend it to anyone else looking for a good read. However, I would also recommend you at least start with the first in the series, if not read them all in order.
I've listened to the last 9 books in this series and pretty much enjoyed the stories but this book has totally me stopped me from reading any further. The violence against women in this author's book are too much. Too many of his books have rape or near rape situations. I realize violence against women is real and it is serious. The description in the beginning of this book was so brutal and violent that it was over the top for me. The author seems like a misogynist and I can't go through anymore of the violence he puts on female characters. His main character, McDermitt, has his list of rules to date his daughter yet he can salivate over a woman, well that woman has a father as well. I know people love these books and the actual mysteries are good but I think continuing on for me would be frustrating.
As with all of Wayne Stinnett's books this is a page turner. Even though these titles aren't back to back, knockdown drag out, non stop action, they keep you riveted. I have become such a fan of Jesse McDermott, his friends, family and associates I feel like family. My only problem with this and the others in the series. I can't put it down. The end of every chapter sucks you into the next. There is just enough intrigue to be addictive while promising more. Even though I know it is fiction. I want to go to the Florida keys, have a cold beer at the Anchor and one of Rufus's fish sandwiches. I have never read a series that I have felt such a part of. Mr. Stinnett, keep up the good work and thank you for so much reading pleasure.
This was an OK story but I found it was slow going at times. Also although the series is about Jessie, it almost felt like he was a minor character for most of the book. There were more pages devoted to ‘Harley & Duke’ and their actions, than to Jessie. Although this isn’t one of the best books in the series it was still an enjoyable read and the story did ‘pep up’ near the end.
I should add that the author has introduced yet another woman into Jessie’s life. I’m not sure why, as given previous experience she will probably disappear or be killed before the next book.
Loved every one these stories. For anyone living in South Florida or in the deep south, these are must-reads. I would recommend reading them in order, as the characters build throughout the series. You can almost feel the humidity and smell the brine in the air, and it's easy to forget that you aren't there. Readers can kick back and do a marathon read through the whole series of there is enough time available. I can't wait for the next Jesee McDermott adventure. Thanks to Mr. Stinnett !
Written along the same lines as the others in this series, it holds your attention throughout. With the same characters along with a few new ones, the storyline takes many different twists. I would recommend this book to anyone who liked the others in the series plus to any readers looking for action and adventure. I ambled to believe we Wilshire more the future from Jesse's new lady friend in the next installment . Can't wait.
I have completely fallen into this series. 'Fallen Hero' was another great addition to a fantastic series. The action, beautiful scenery and the vast array of personalities kept me glued to the pages. Jesse is always head first into what ever is needed. I like that about him. He's loyal, dependable and pretty much an all around bad-ass. I love the hints that Charity may come back. I love her bad-ass character. I look forward to reading more. A great add to your tbr list.
I'm always wanting to read all of Stinnett's books. Why? Because they are well written, captivating, and have great characters. There's always murder, mystery, and adventure! It was very wonderful as Wayne Stinnett pays tribute to the men and women who have served our country with honor. I'm very pleased to have finished reading it as we enter the Memorial Day weekend. Highly recommend.
I just can't get enough of these Jesse McDermitt Key West adventures. He is moving on to the next phase of his life, but no less active and full of adventure. I love that the bad people are truly wicked and the good people come out in the end. These books are best read in order, though each plot stands on it's own, the characters appear again and again and with each novel, they get more fully developed and become like old friends.
Well if you are looking for more sex and bondage from Stinnett this is your book! Lots of changes to many roles and again Jesse has a new girlfriend. My only complaint is how Stinnett ends several of his books, he tends to have Readers Digest endings short endings the Calvary rides in saves the day. I thought Jesse was going to have to tussle with Duke using his Marine training…he wasn’t even there? But looking forward to the gang doing PI work at the Keys!
MR Stinnett's books never disappoint, good story of good people, the kind we all wish we knew at one time or another. And now the sad part, I delay reading them as long as I can because the wait for the next one seems to take forever. Thanks Mr Stinnett, I really enjoyed this one.
I read "Fallen Out" at the turn of the year, have read all the books in the McDermott series. After three weeks of binge reading, I think I'll be fortunate if I find any titles that will provide such entertainment through the rest of 2018. Thanks, Mr. Stinnett, for such great reads.
Jesse and his boat have provided an interesting and exciting adventure in the Keys. The series finale moves smoothly and surely, as the author has honed his writing skill as the series progressed. I will be reading the following books by the author and the new characters introduced therein.
I and I alone can only make this observation because Jesse McDermott is such an honorable person and can be seen as with deep and loving eyes. Making friends everywhere he goes and longing to keep his privacy and his friends within arms length. He is someone you truly want to have on your on your side.
Time flies by when you read the books in this series. Interesting plots and admirable main characters. I've never been east of Bozeman, Montana, but feel like I've spent time in the Florida keys. My one complaint is that just about every book had at least one rape in it, if not multiple rapes or gang rapes. I've learned to skip past those.
This is the second reading of this book (by me), the first coming a couple of years ago when I was still drinking (and sadly don't remember it), but it's another wonderful, exciting book in this series. I know, and NOW remember the continuation of this series and for Jesse McDermitt and Wayne Stinnett lovers this is certainly a winner, as are they all!
I really liked this one, and especially liked how Stinnett honored a true hero. Billy comes for a visit and plays a big part in this story. A new detective gives Jesse a few 'problems'. Ha! A little death and destruction happens, of course. And look for some big changes coming up!
A treasure diving couple is brutally murdered, and Jesse's friend is the primary suspect. Jesse starts poking around the islands. When more bodies turn up, it seems there's a serial killer, and a beautiful detective is also searching for the killer.
Enjoyed the whole book. Have read the first 10 and will gladly continue on with the rest. Wayne keeps you wanting to get to the next page and feeling disappointed when the story ends. I highly recommend it to those that enjoy action and the life of those living in the Keys!
The Jesse McDermitt series by Wayne Stinnett is a fun read. I just started this series 9/12/24 and have already read the first eleven books. I didn’t realize I could read him free with my KindleUnlimited subscription. I am so pleased that he is included. Truly one of the best Caribbean adventure series.
Reading this series has made me a dedicated fan of Wayne Stinnett. if you like adventure, mystery, strong friendships in beautiful locations this is your kind of story! Read all ten, you won't be sorry!
I really like to read about life in the Keys. Jesse is a true hero although a little long in the tooth now. Always a crime to solve and bad guys to catch. It's a good read. I gave it 4 stars because of the endless descriptions of guns and boat motors.
Other than the opening murders, this McDermitt adventure starts out slower than the usual offerings. Then it picks up speed and turns into a pretty good read. For those who follow the series, it also takes the group in an entirely new direction, away from Homeland Security.
