Returning for its fourth outing, EXTERUS presents a whole new crop of speculative short fiction and serialized novels. 'Journeyman in Gray, ' 'Vahrin Ascendant, ' and 'The Pellucid Witch' continue with new installments while Melody Jones, Aled Thomas, and Victoria Knapp return with stand alone stories. This volume also contains a classic tale by the father of weird fiction, Robert W. Chamber
Admittedly these stories still aren't typically my bag, but it's the sort of thing that wins you over with quality. I mean, this is a genuinely well put together collection, I'd even go as far as lovingly edited with a lot of thought an passion behind put into it. The foreword draws you in with promises of dark adventures and then lo and behold...dark adventures. I'm not for high sword fantasies, but there is much more here, including two cute and impish tales from Melody Jones to lighten up the mood. There are currently 3 serials, including one by the editor, if you're into that sort of thing. If not, there's other kinds of fun. Notably a classic short story from the legendary Chambers, of whom until now I've only heard. Often I find classic horror too slow, too muted, but this one was a terrific story, very eerie and atmospheric. Nice find. Very entertaining, particularly for genre fans. Recommended.
