Short book of poems that ruminates upon the subject of July, literally, metaphorically, and sonically. Strongly influenced by Jack Mueller, Robert Duncan, and Charles Olson, Harvey follows his word chops into the heart of Summer, and leaves the winter world of perpetual war far behind.
This chapbook, July by Kyle Harvey, has been such an influential work for me. I view it as one single poem, despite the description of it being a series of small poems. I always read it aloud and straight through. It’s a clastic poem, fragmented postmodernism, wherein each of July’s sediments carries such weight. There are so many passages in this little book that stick to my ribs all summer. I’ve written before that Kyle Harvey is my favorite living poet, and July is a glaring example of why.
