Discover War Angel - the culmination, where the other stories converge. And ask yourself, Do You Believe?
“There are twice the amount of souls as there are people in every room,” Mother always said. “There are those you can see. Like you and me. But those you can’t…are still there…some of them watch over us.” The immortals have suffered a near total annihilation throughout the world; from Miami to Paris, Cairo and Sri Lanka; throughout time and history; from ancient Biblical times, towards the Renaissance, the Dark Ages and Modern-Day cosmopolitan cities. The immortals were dying. A gifted girl loses her parents in close succession and fights with God in between visits from the Devil. As a woman, she leaves home and discovers Vaudeville in Paris, and “la passion de la vanité”. During that time, the myth of angels – in particular, a War Angel – among the populace was substantial, leading to questions: Who is the War Angel? And could the War Angel save the immortals from extinction? A.L. Mengel crafts a patchwork of lush, provocative storytelling; voluptuous prose; elegant, exquisite description; set against the backdrop of glorifying the grandiose battle of Good versus Evil. War Angel will speak to believers – and non-believers – alike.
A.L. Mengel is an Award-Winning Author of Speculative Fiction. His novels and stories have each been called a "complex examination of relationships" with characters on a journey of transformation. He writes in the Supernatural, Paranormal and Science Fiction genres. Mengel novels are typically deep, philosophical, and thought provoking.
His works address issues of alcoholism, intolerance, grieving and death, fear of the afterlife, and the journey for understanding, among others. His protagonists, some of which are angels and demons, are frequently found on a search for purpose or transformation, which are recurring themes in his stories.
Mengel grew up reading Stephen King and Anne Rice, two of his favorite authors. He first found a love of writing upon taking a Creative Writing class in High School - but did not become a more serious writer until becoming an Arts and Entertainment Editor in Philadelphia, and later while taking another Creative Writing class where he was inspired to complete his first novel. More recently, he has connected and interacted with his readers via "The Writing Studio" where he shares his writing methods and inspiration. He enjoys time with his two dogs and two cats, and loves to write outdoors as much as possible.
War Angel Personifies the Classical Mélange of Good versus Evil
Judgement Day. Some look forward to it, others dread it. A.L. Mengel begins his epic novel War Angel with quotes from scripture. The judgement of the dead. All in the quote which examines the prophecies which man has held belief in for millennia. And the judgement of Satan. Would he be cast into the pit of fire for all of eternity? In War Angel, Lucifer does make an appearance. Mengel weaves the perception of the dark angel into the story, but with a subtle, poetic, whispering style that only A.L. Mengel could execute. The story is a massive epic and begins with a question: Who is the War Angel? A lengthy narrative introduces the main question of the story which readers are invited to ponder. A sharp turn follows and we see, through the eyes of a child, the death of her parents. Another question follows. Where did her life go wrong? The small girl witnesses the bloody scene before her, and questions God and her placement on the Earth. Could she be the War Angel? As the reader is flung through different periods of time – sometimes thousands of years and thousands of miles apart – there is a certain point where the reader needs to pay attention to the details of Mengel’s descriptions. War Angel is not a casual read. As with other Mengel novels, many minute details can introduce questions which a reader may not discover the answer to until much later in the story. Descriptions or character traits can be mentioned briefly and then not resurface until many pages later. It’s a sophisticated story for a sophisticated reader. The visuals, though, are where War Angel shines the most. Mengel writes about massive angelic wings soaring across the sky, music and hymns filling the air, and, all in all, examines the myth of supernatural angels to readers…myself I was in awe and wonder throughout the story. I kept asking myself, as I turned the pages, if angels were real. But once I reached the last page, A.L. Mengel assured me that yes, angels are real.
AL does it again with a brilliantly written book, this time in War Angel. Following Delia, we get thrust back into the complex world of immortals and their problems. I loved when the author dropped subtle hints at previous books, such as The Quest for Immortality, The Blood Decanter, and even better, his The Hooded Man nods. It really gives a boost to those who have read all of his books that link together.
AL's style is so unique that is captures you in right away. Plus, the cover - this book sits on my desk like a work of art. Everything about it is fantastic. If you enjoy horror or the angels/demons themes, AL is the author for you and War Angel will jump off the pages.
