Travel with Gordon Goldsborough from Rapid City School to Mallard Lodge to Union Stockyards and many places in between as the author helps us reclaim some of our long-lost heritage. This full colour, richly illustrated book looks at abandoned sites around Manitoba, describing their features, what caused them to be abandoned, and what they will tell us about the history of the province.
Gordon Goldsborough is an aquatic ecologist in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Manitoba, and a former director of the Delta Marsh Field Station. An active member of the Manitoba Historical Society, Goldsborough has written two previous books and is presently doing a weekly radio series on CBC entitled "Abandoned Manitoba".
Manitoba is an often overlooked Province and yet has a very rich and storied history. The Author provides a wide array of locations and reveals many interesting details of a Province in constant change. I went through a small town with the wonderful name of Snowflake near the U. S. border which has only three families living there now and in it's heyday was a thriving community. He mentions nearby Star mound, a hill in the middle of the Prairie which the Indians used to look for buffalo and reveals it was used as a burial site. Great read with many wonderful photographs.
A wide ranging book on some of the abandoned places around the province. Goldsborough's love for what he is dong shines through and gives me the desire to drive through the province looking at and for abandoned places.
Was hoping for more pictures of abandoned sites, or more ideas of places to visit. It offers some very thorough background information on the sites he does visit though, so for Manitoba armchair historians this is a great choice.
Highly recommended for anyone interested in Manitoba history. Filled with beautiful photos and expertly researched information, this book delves into the fascinating history of sites all around the province.
