The world is full of monsters. At least Lena believed that was true. After all, she’d once witnessed a monster tear apart her family, leaving her broken and bleeding. All alone in the world except for the one person who was always there for her. Her best friend, Evelyn.
Her search for the truth reveals not only was she right, but that she is one of those supernatural creatures that fills the world. Taught how to use her powers, she joins with a team of hunters in their war against the supernatural monsters.
She soon finds that not only is she fighting the monsters, but also her growing feelings for the one person she’s terrified of losing. As truths are finally revealed, Lena will come face to face with the creature that’s haunted her nightmares and be forced to choose what side she’s truly on.
3 1/2 Stars. I had just read three books in a row that were only okay. On top of that I’m fighting off a little bit of a reading slump, so it was making everything worse. I decided to take a little break from ARC’s and try reading a book from a genre I love, paranormal. I wasn’t gaga over this book like I was hoping, but it was better than what I have been reading.
This is the first book in a series available on Kindle Unlimited. First I want to mention this book was good quality. It didn’t have any blatant editing issues and was a smooth read. It is not a bad deal for only 2.99 or free with KU.
This book takes place in a world where supernatural beings are all around, but most humans don’t realize it; werewolves, vamps, demons, ghouls and more. I don’t want to give away what the main character Lena is. She is not a super we see often and I enjoyed that.
I have to be honest that I did not care for this book in the beginning. There is the obligatory info dump (to explain the paranormals and what Lena is) and I honestly didn’t like the direction the book was going. I was not big on the cast of secondary characters. Luckily, the last 1/3 of the book was so much better! I finally was into the story and enjoying myself. Unfortunately, than the book ended. Talk about making me have to read book 2. But since I finally like where the storyline is going, I’m excited to keep reading and hopeful I might even like the next books more than this one.
This is not a bad read for KU or its cheap price. Luckily the book does get much better than how it starts. It doesn’t have any romance, but there is a prospect on the horizon for our main character. This book does end on a cliffhanger. Not a horrible cliffhanger, but the kind that makes you want to read the next book immediately. If you are a paranormal fan, you might want to give this a try.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and have already purchased next one. The beginning is not great, but once Abe gets introduced and the action starts it moves at a good pace. There are intentionality tons of unanswered questions and shady characters, so don’t expect the plot to wrap up at all at the end of the book. With that being said, the writing is good, the plot is supernatural and creative and moves at an enjoyable pace, and there is f/f romance. Really, what more do I want?
I felt this book was a fun and quick read. However, I felt the storyline could have been a little more fluid. I felt that the characters were not developed enough, in that we don't really know a lot about them. Also, I felt like there were a lot of unanswered questions, but the rest of the series might answer them. Overall, I am hoping that the other books do more character development and allow the reader to feel more of a connection.
I thoroughly enjoyed this brief tale, it left me wanting more. The world building is very good, the characters are great. Many common tropes, with minor twisting.
Take a hefty dose of action, a cast of interesting characters, introduce an unexpected element, shake well, and you've got Born of Shadows. One of the things I look at to determine if a book is "good" or not is whether or not I go back over it in my head at a later date. I've relived some of the key elements more than a few times and wondered how I would handle those things were I inserted into the story.
All in all, Born of Shadow (Shadow Walkers Book One) was an entertaining story that leaves enough questions to make you look forward to the next book in the series.
