From bestselling author Thea Harrison comes the first in an explosive new trilogy set in the Elder Races world....

Her past is a blank, her future uncertain....

Recovering from a shooting, LAPD witch consultant Sophie Ross leaves her job and travels to the U.K. to search for answers about her childhood. When she encounters a Daoine Sidhe knight of the Dark Court, she becomes entangled in an ancient hatred between two arcane forces.

He has given his body and soul to fight for his people....

Barred from his homeland along with his surviving brother knights, Nikolas Sevigny is embroiled in a conflict that threatens everything he holds dear. Only by uniting his people's resources can they hope to prevail against Isabeau, the deadly Queen of the Light Court. He will do anything and use anyone to return home to Lyonesse.

When Nikolas encounters Sophie, he sees a tool to be used. The insouciant witch might be the key to unlocking every passageway that has been barred to the knights of the Dark Court, even as a fascination for her takes root in what's left of his soul.

Sophie has no intention of becoming anyone's pawn, yet the fierce Nikolas is so compelling, she can't deny the temptation that endangers her guarded heart.

As magic threatens Lyonesse, Queen Isabeau unleashes her merciless Hounds, and Nikolas and Sophie become embroiled in a race for survival. Meanwhile, the passion that ignites between them burns too hot to be denied and quickly turns into obsession.

Thank goodness they both know better than to fall in love...

I write paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and other stuff. I taught myself to read when I was four. That was around the time I tried to ride my tricycle to work. I wasn't sure where work was, but I knew it had to be interesting if people went there every day. Now I combine my love of books with work, and I don't have to ride my tricycle to get there. My Elder Races series began May, 2011. You can also find me on Twitter and Facebook!

I REALLY like this author's Elder Races series - ESPECIALLY books 1-4 - and this is a spin-off of that series...it takes place in the same world that Harrison has created there (which is AMAZING by the way)...

description

But this one just didn't do it as much for me, sadly.

Despite the fact that she already "built" this world in the Elder Races series, I feel like I still trudged through the foundation-building for this series.

I had a hard time getting a good feel for Sophie and her powers and abilities...

description

...and it took too long (in my opinion) for Harrison to reveal Nikolas' origins and the conflict in which he and his brethren found themselves.

All of that left me feeling completely disconnected from the two main characters, unfortunately, which affected my enjoyment of the story.

Don't get me wrong, the plot was very interesting; however, the lack of chemistry and I felt between the H and h left me feeling less than 100 percent engaged.

I will still read the next on though.
As I said, I really like this world and I know what Harrison is capable of.

➦So I've read this to scratch my paranormal itch. Yep. Apparently that's a thing for me now. Well, consider it scratched!

➦Sophie, our heroine, knows a bunch of magic spells. Some runes. Or something. Sorry, people, this book was 4 books ago for me. #badtimemanagement

➦Anyways. What's interesting, is that Sophie doesn't come off as a badass in the magic department. But she's sassy and doesn't take shit from anyone. And her spells keep her safe. IF ONLY SHE COULD HAVE A GUN TOO.

➦She travels to U.K. to some house in hopes of opening it up. Because apparently nobody else has been able to for ages. And they've tried, those clueless bastards.

➦See, if Sophie does get inside this house she will be given the title to it and she likes the money. Who doesn't?

➦But once Sophie gets to the countryside her car breaks down, her cell phone dies and a whole bunch of other weird things start happening. And then she runs into Nikolas at the bar, where he goes completely asshole alpha on her. And HE, by the way, IS A BADASS.

➦No worries, Sophie isn't intimidated. And it appears that they have met before, telepathically, or some shit. So she's all like

➦And so Nikolas starts stalking her because this woman has other stuff besides pussy to offer :D She might know a spell or two that can help Nikolas in the war his fighting against something something. May be he'll help her get into the house? Read the book, people :)

Sophie and Nicholas

"Do not push me, human."
"I'll push you every bit much as you've pushed me."

Sophie met Nicholas through a vision, while she was reading runes and she was concentrating on her near future. Nicholas was in a middle of a battle across the Atlantic, when he felt that someone was looking at him. Scared Sophie threw the stones away and the vision scattered.

Obviously the two of them did not have the best beginning in their relationship.

Things do not improve later on when Sophie travels at the border between England and Wales to try to be the owner of a spooky house that belonged to the man who saved her as a child and she meets Nicholas again face to face this time.

• Nicholas does not trust Sophie.
• Sophie does not like Nicholas.
• Nicholas keeps ordering around Sophie.
• Sophie keeps pushing away Nicholas.

And suddenly and without thinking, they kiss. After that they cannot keep their hands and their mouths off each other.

Of course there will be “ordering around” and “pushing away” throughout the book, but there will be also sexual tension and mating tension.
I just love it when a Wyr starts the mating process without realizing it and everybody is wondering what is wrong with him, because suddenly the Wyr becomes agitated, highly possessive and completely focused on his female.

The secondary characters are very interesting in this book: Nicholas’s comrades who just want to go back home to Lyonesse and feel safe, the highly magical Morgan who is the lackey of the cruel Light Queen Isabeu, Robin the puck and more monsters like deadly Hounds and lycanthropes.

Moonshadow is a spinoff of Elder Races. There are two main differences between the two series:
a) The action takes place in England instead of USA,
b) The characters do not belong to a particular Elder Race. They are mostly outcasts, partly Elder Race, partly human:
-Sophie is described as “mostly human” and “highly magical”. We will find out at some point what she is partly.
-Nicholas is almost a Wyr. Part man and part leopard and also “highly magical”
-Nicholas’ friends are ABOMINATIONS, demons, challenging, impure, god’s monsters and part of the Dark Court: One is partly Gargoyle, two are dhampyres (the result of a union between a half-breed Fae or Elf and a human who is almost vampire), one is partly medusa, the rest have Wyr blood but they are not fully Wyr.

Thea Harrison is taking a break from Dragos and Pia, their children and their friends – although the book takes place in the same world. I am so happy because she has created once more an awesome new adventure that blew my mind.

I know that this is supposed to be a trilogy, but I strongly believe that THREE BOOKS ARE NOT ENOUGH.

4.5 - "Stay the course." Stars!

To say that I was impressed with this book would be an understatement. Thea Harrison, is a new author for me, and Moonshadow gave me everything I am looking for in a story from this genre.

The author set the scene extremely well, and being the start of the Moonshadow series there were introductions aplenty through the first few chapters, I think it highlights the quality of the writing and storytelling in that I wasn’t confused at any point about who everyone was.

For decades now, they had been searching and fighting, and dying…

I loved Sophie and Nikolas together, the former a partial Djinn her magic and knowledge offers something up to the Knight of the Dark Court and his small band of Brothers that are left on Earth that is sorely needed, an opportunity to travel back to their own realm Lyonesse, to bring back to Earth more warriors and supplies in an effort to defeat the Queen of the Light Court.

"You might be the key."

As I said I haven’t read anything by this author before, but the imagination, colour and depth of development that she gave this story just kept me gripped to its pages right up to its end, I just hope that the release of the next novel in the series; Spellbound is in early rather than latter summer 2017, because I literally cannot wait to get my hands on it.

"I’ve lost so many people. So many… I thought I didn’t have it in me to care about anyone else again. But now I do, and yes, I’m struggling, because I don’t think I could take losing you too."

Nic and Sophie together were a force to be reckoned with, this is a couple that literally look to have a disagreement just so they can spend time making up with each other, Nic is old school chivalry, commandeering, controlling and when he tells you to do something he expects it to be done. Sophie a woman of modern day is all about making her own decisions, and not being told what to do, so the rub between them caused some really great friction burns in regards to the verbal sparring, and sexy times as the book progressed.

"You’re still insufferable… Just saying."

"And you’re the same mouthy broad you were last night."

This series I think is essentially going to be a battle of good versus Evil, I am sure as it develops there will be triumphs as well as losses, I am not sure whether the author will continue the series from this couples point of view, or bring new and/or secondary characters to the fore with each installment, but I know I am looking forward to seeing how things develop as the story-line progresses. Its safe to say that Moonshadow is most definitely just the beginning of what I expect to be an absolutely outstanding series, and I cannot wait.

"I didn’t know I was looking for you, but I was."

Moonshadow (Moonshadow #1) by Thea Harrison is an exciting fantasy book that was so fun to read/listen to. I had the audible version and the voice was perfect!
This was about a gal that had a gift, she used it as a detective but she was recovering from being shot. She gets a offer to go overseas to a old house that was left to her. It will be hers if she can get the house to let her in. Yep, if the house will let her in! She feels the tingle of the house in the picture. She is excited to go. So much happens! She finds a lost, starving dog, that isn't a dog. Bikers that aren't just bikers. Attacked by werewolves, her dog turns into a monkey, oh, chaos! It is fun, dangerous, sexy, and so full of great fantasy! Twists and turns everywhere. I ended up picking up a new phrase after reading this book, I use it all the time now, lol. It's probably not nice but I love it! Great read and the narration topped it off. I forgot it was a narration and I thought it was different people or creatures. AWESOME. Got to get book 2!

4.5 Old Timey Foot Stars

Review @ Vanilla & Spice Books

Thanks for asking, asshole!

I am a huge fan of Thea Harrison's Elder Races series and so far I've gobbled up all the books like candy (except the last full length one, which I'll remedy very soon). She is a master of world building and making a landscape appear in your mind. Add to that her sassy way of writing and I'm a goner.

Sophie, who is a witch consultant for the LAPD, is still recovering from gunshot wounds she received when a police operation went awry. When a stranger contacts her with an offer nobody could refuse she jumps at the chance: An inaccessible house in the UK plus the entailed land and a significant annuity will belong to her if she can gain access to said house.

Nikolas Sevigny's loyalty to his men is unshakable. Of the hundred he had only nine are left, the stranded Daoine Sidhe knights of the Dark Court. Cut off from his homeland he fights with every fiber to help bringing down the Queen of the Light Court and her trusted man Morgan.

Sophie and Nik meet under less than ideal circumstances. Two weeks prior while doing a reading she saw a vision of Nik attacking her. Only it didn't seem like a vision. It's only natural that now, being in the UK, her defenses are up and her distrust for this beautiful man is firmly in place. She is drawn into a war that isn't hers. With the house. that is almost like a fortress, she has a lot to offer to Nik and his men and he is ruthless enough to take it if helps his mission.

At the sight, Nikolas’s mouth tightened. The ghost of the man he used to be turned uneasily in its grave. He had no illusions about himself. Once he would have been filled with remorse at bruising a female, but long ago he had turned cold and hard.

You know those heroes, the ones that are hard to love in the beginning...but when you start loving them, you go all in? Yep, Nikolas is one of those. He was such an asshat in the beginning, I wanted to slap him into next week. The enlightenment came quickly though. He is a couple of hundred years old and in the last decades his sole focus was on getting himself and his men home. There was no room for niceties. Of course he bristles and gets his boxers in a twist when he meets this beautiful witch who keeps mouthing off at him.

“You’re a damn mouthy broad,” he said and kissed her.

Nik is everything you expect in an alpha male: overbearing, sometimes rude, commandeering, controlling, rough. But also loyal and gentle and caring.

"I’ve lost so many people. So many… I thought I didn’t have it in me to care about anyone else again. But now I do, and yes, I’m struggling, because I don’t think I could take losing you too."

Sophie is a woman with her own mind and she has no compunctions letting Nik know that he can shove his orders where the sun doesn't shine. She has a temper but once she and Nik get close you find her more often reigning it in and picking her battles. She has a protective side to her that makes Nik go batty because, dammit, he is the one giving orders! Sophie is also a crafty and creative witch, she's brave and kind and I loved how she took care of Robin, the puck.

Their bickering is hilarious and you get the feeling that they only argue to make up again with mind-blowing sex. Speaking of, Thea Harrison is known for some steamy scenes (I'll never forget Dragos' mating heat) so you can definitely expect major sexual tension throughout the book.

“The gods only know why,” he whispered. “But I find you sexy as hell. So far, you’ve been nothing but trouble.”
“Ugh, stop talking,” she told him, putting the fingers of both hands over his mouth. “You ruin it when you talk. I find you sexy as hell too, as long as you stay silent.”

One thing I need to mention are the several inaccuracies I've encountered. I was surprised there were so many because a good editor and proofreader should have caught on and gotten rid of them. Only to name a few:

"Silver was a hard metal, and besides, solid silver bullets would be much more expensive."

- Silver is not a hard metal - in fact it is extremely soft

“An earl— an English earl?” “Yes.” “Does that make you titled as well?” Her knowledge of English titles was almost nonexistent. Kathryn shrugged. “It does. I’m a countess, but I’ve lived in the States for so long I never use it.

- the daughter of an Earl is never a countess, only the wife is.

- there were several mix ups with English and American terms. The heroine being American kept saying supper and crisps, the hero said ass although he had spent a long time in the UK.

With that being said, it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story which was tremendous and I can't wait to continue this series. This was an extremely well done introduction to this new story arc in the world of the Elder Races and I am really giddily awaiting Gawain's story.

“Then,” he said, even more quietly, “there are truths that change. Before I met you, I was adamant about not investing in a relationship. I was constantly on the run, my life in danger, and that is a terrible thing to take to a woman’s bed. And I met you. You’re stubborn, infuriating, courageous, inventive, generous, and kind. You make me laugh. You make me crazy. You make me rediscover things inside myself that I thought were dead forever. You make me hard as a rock until all I can think about is tearing off your clothes.

So when one of your favorite authors emails you and asks if you'd possibly have time to read and blurb her new book, and you're like "okay, that's cool, I'd be happy to do that" but inside you're basically
[image error]

via GIPHY

Yeah. Totally me when Thea Harrison asked me to read Moonshadow, her newest book and the first in a new series.

So here is my OFFICIAL blurb for the book:

"Thrilling and deliciously sexy, Moonshadow is a smart, action-packed introduction to a new adventure in Harrison's complex and compelling Elder Races world. Intrigue goes hand-in-hand with an addictive romance that will please new and established readers alike. I can't wait to see what comes next."

And my unofficial one is:

GAH! This is so good, you guys! She totally set the series in the Elder Races world, which is so awesome because I love that world, but it's like totally new and you could start here and I've been wanting to learn about the Light Fae/Dark Fae court rivalry for ages and if you love the Elder Races, you will totally love this, but if you have no idea what I'm talking about, don't worry just jump in and enjoy! I promise you won't be lost at all. This is so good!

So you can see why I went with the first "official" blurb when I emailed her back. Because I'm totally cool. Really.

Here's the synopsis for the book:

Her past is a blank, her future uncertain….

Recovering from a shooting, LAPD witch consultant Sophie Ross leaves her job and travels to the U.K. to search for answers about her childhood. When she encounters a Daoine Sidhe knight of the Dark Court, she becomes entangled in an ancient hatred between two arcane forces.

He has given his body and soul to fight for his people….

Barred from his homeland along with his surviving brother knights, Nikolas Sevigny is embroiled in a conflict that threatens everything he holds dear. Only by uniting his people’s resources can they hope to prevail against Isabeau, the deadly Queen of the Light Court. He will do anything and use anyone to return home to Lyonesse.

When Nikolas encounters Sophie, he sees a tool to be used. The insouciant witch might be the key to unlocking every passageway that has been barred to the knights of the Dark Court, even as a fascination for her takes root in what’s left of his soul.

Sophie has no intention of becoming anyone’s pawn, yet the fierce Nikolas is so compelling, she can’t deny the temptation that endangers her guarded heart.

As magic threatens Lyonesse, Queen Isabeau unleashes her merciless Hounds, and Nikolas and Sophie become embroiled in a race for survival. Meanwhile, the passion that ignites between them burns too hot to be denied and quickly turns into obsession.

Thank goodness they both know better than to fall in love…

OF COURSE THEY KNOW BETTER THAN TO FALL IN LOVE. Of course they do.

(And smug elves are smug.)

I don't want to give too much away, because the synopsis really does capture the book very well, but there was a ton of action, lots of humor, two protagonists I found alternately wonderful and maddening (in the best way, of course) and a great set up for more books in this very promising series. I highly recommend this one for new and old fans of Harrison's work. This would be an excellent and fun vacation read.

So grab it now! I believe the original price is $5.99, so the $2.99 release price is really a steal.

4 Exciting Wyr Stars!!

Thea Harrison’s Moonshadow is a exciting start to the new Elder Races spin off "Moonshadow" series. In Moonshadow we’re introduced Sophie Ross who works with the LAPD as a Witch Consultant and is recovering from being shot while on a case. While recuperating, she is given the opportunity to travel to England to discover information about her childhood with the chance of inheriting a 5-acre estate in England, but there is a catch, so far nobody has been able enter the manor house because its protected by a spell, so she must find a way to get past the spell and get inside the manor house to claim her inheritance.

“I don’t know,” she lied. “I need a few days to think it over.”
Even as she said it, she knew she was going to take the offer. Hell, she might even escape from whatever dark menace haunted her rune readings lately, along with the owner of that predatory, handsome face.
Or if she went, she could be running right toward it. Toward him.
Ah, well. You’ can’t fix stupid. And you can’t heal crazy.”

Sophie becomes involved with Wyr Nikolas Sevigny and his band of Knights of the Dark Court when Sophie sees Nikolas through a vision while reading runes and looking into her future. Unfortunately, she sees Nikolas, who at the time was in a middle of a battle when he sensed her presence watching him. When Nikolas confronts Sophie in her vision, she gets spooked and breaks the connection. Naturally, when she arrives in England Nikolas is there, who is very cautious about outsiders, especially one who seemed to be spying on him.

"Do not push me, human."
"I'll push you every bit much as you've pushed me."

Moonshadow was exciting from start to finish. Sophie is a snarky, strong, and a likeable character. She is a powerful human witch/Djinn, who’s powerful magic benefits Nikolas and the Knights. My heart went out to the Knights, and how long they have been fighting to get back home. Sophie’s and Nikolas’ relationship progresses with many bumps in the road, since neither trust easily.

There are many twists and turns that make the story exciting. The Wyr secondary characters are great; I’m looking forward to their stories!!

Title: Moonshadow
Series: Moonshadow #1
Author: Thea Harrison
Release date: December 13, 2016
Cliffhanger: No
HEA

Despair had no place here. It had been a long, dark battle, in the darkest of wars, but they would hold. They would all hold.

I've gotten woefully behind in reading Thea Harrison's books. Dragon Bound, book one in the Elder Races, was one of my all-time favorite PNR/fantasy books. EVER. Not only did I fall in love with the humor and snark from her characters, her world building is absolutely top notch. The details put into the people, culture, magic, and the intricate web of how they all interconnect are rich and precise. These key ingredients make her writing surpass the ordinary and reach extraordinary. Moonshadow reminded me all over again what I love about her writing and will be rectifying my lapse in continuing the Elder Races.

As a witch consultant for the LAPD, Sophie has had to be tough to survive the things she's seen and experienced. She's the type of heroine I really go for: a strong, independent woman who doesn't take nonsense from anyone. Her sarcastic, self-depreciating personality had me laughing on more than one occasion and her unpredictability left me guessing what she would say or do next. She wasn't afraid of any person or situation she came across. Rather than from danger, she jumped in front of it and gave it the middle finger. (Much to the eternal chagrin of Nikolas)

When she gets an unusual offer she can't refuse, she jumps on a plane and heads to the UK to try to slip through centuries worth of magic. She gets a whole lot more than she bargained for. A huge monstrosity of a house that repels people from entering and transported past inhabitants in strange and usual ways becomes the promise for an entire race of people. And she is the key to unlocking it. The simple vacation that she took on a whim turns into a desperate race to return a group of dwindling soldiers back to their home.

Sophie meets Nikolas shortly after arriving and right from the start they clash and butt heads. It was without a doubt NOT love at first sight, more like love to hate you at first sight. A bad first impression, and Nik's lack of sensitivity leaves her itching to put him in his place. And every time she ruffled this stoic man's feathers I couldn't help but laugh. She was exactly what he needed.

“I might choose to lock the door when you leave because it’s a good idea, not because you ordered me to.” His eyes narrowed.
“One of these days you’re going to say, ‘Sure, Nik. That’s a good idea, I think I’m going to do that.’” Nik. She liked that.
“Don’t hold your breath.” She laughed.

She scowled. "I'm not a trick pony to perform on your command."
"No, a trick pony doesn't know how to talk back like you do." The exasperation was heavy in his voice. What on earth did he have to be exasperated about? It was enough to make her exasperated at him.

She seemed to be a magnet for trouble with no knowledge of what she was getting herself into. She was exasperating, stubborn, and prickly. But as much as she frustrated him, there was no denying her bravery. She was a fighter, and he respected that.

She resurrected something inside him, the kind of man he used to be, protective of and attentive to those he cared for.

A reluctant partnership was formed and slowly she began to see pieces of what was hidden under his gruff exterior. He's not the easiest to love at first, but by the end he had completely won me over. He showed a lot of growth in character and I loved seeing not only his transformation, but theirs as a couple. The humor kept me highly entertained, and the plot was unique and engrossing.

My only not giving this a full five stars was that there were some simple inconsistencies in the book that could have easily been corrected. But in no way did they detract from my enjoyment of the overall story.

If you haven't read anything by Thea Harrison yet, now is your chance to get in on her brand new series. I was highly impressed by this first offering and will be continuing on with the following installments without a doubt.

Wherever the moon’s shadow touched them, something of their true nature appeared. Moonshadow always revealed truth to those who knew how to see it.

I loved it. My only complaint - total book hangover! Even with its length it still ended way too soon for me.

If you love the Thea Harrison’s Elder Race series than you are going to flip over this spin off Moonshadow series.

Sophie Ross, a LAPD magical consultant, is taking some time off while she recuperates from gunshot wounds. She is approached by a renowned Elder races doctor with a proposal. If Sophie can access her family’s abandoned home in the U.K. then she will get it, the property and a large trust to maintain the lands. All she has to do is take a picture, proof, of her making it across the threshold and or entering the house. It’s a win, win for Sophie so she jumps on a plane and heads to the U.K.

Nikolas is a warrior leader for the dark elves. Him and his fellow warriors have been shut off from his home land for 100’s of year. Isabeau, the Queen of the Light Court, and Morgan, her sorcerer have been killing off the dark elves one by one and have been very successful at it. Nikolas will do whatever it takes to get back to his own world, even use Sophie and her abilities to gain the upper hand.

Harrison masterfully draws you into the battle between the Light and Dark elves as well as hooks you on all the characters that come into play. Explosive sexual chemistry, a strong plot, amazing new characters and a totally new continent, Moonshadow is going to be another must read, pre-order series.

I received this ARC copy of Moonshadow from Teddy Harrison LLC in exchange for a honest and voluntary review. This book is set for publication December 13, 2016.

She stuck the screen of her phone into his face. "Here. This is me."

He watched the clip of an octopus running away along the ocean floor. The words, 'NOPE. NOPE. NOPE' appeared at the bottom of the screen.

description

"What the hell am I looking at?" he barked.

"It's a nope GIF. You've never seen a nope GIF? There are hundred on the internet. " She smiled. "We literally never have to have this conversation again. You'll bring it up again, and I'll just send you a GIF. Subject closed."

ABSOLUTELY EPIC.

This is my second favorite book after Dragon Bound and let me make this clear. Dragon Bound is like a cinnamon bun sprinkled with unicorn's dust and a dragon's badassery. It's hard to top that. But Moonshadow is like a box of glazed donut dipped with some kickass spicy rainbow sprinkles . I don't even know what the heck is that but Moonshadow is awesome.

This book is still set on the Elder Races world and thank you Thea Harrison for doing that. I love how this book is still familiar enough that I get nostalgic while reading it and at the same time, there's a "newness" to it that makes the story and the series interesting.

If the Elder Races series is set on US, the Moonshadow series is set on UK. Which means new hotties, new baddies and new types of creatures will be introduced to us soon.

description

When it comes to the MCs, Sophie and Nikolas is fun to read. Nikolas is a very interesting type of Elder Race and he is a bit autocratic, very loyal and very yummy. I also want to cheer Sophie for not being a pushover and "Thank you for asking, asshole" is the best response I've read so far when it comes to handling domineering men.

I won't spoil much but if you have read Shadow's End, a certain character who I found interesting (I was hoping this character would get a story of their own) has an important role in this book. I also love the possibility that the evil bitch in this story would connect the Elder Race and Moonshadow series in the future *cross fingers*

LAPD consultant Sophia Ross is handed the opportunity of a lifetime when she comes to the UK to fulfill the terms of a will. Upon arriving, Sophia realizes that there is more at stake than a little breaking and entering. Sophia has landed right in the middle of an ongoing war between the Light and Dark Courts.

Nikolas Sevigny, a Daoine Sidhe knight of the Dark Court, has been in exile for centuries along with his fellow knights. Unable to return home to Lyonesse, he has been searching for a way to reunite his people in order to stop Isabeau, Queen of the Light Court, from destroying them all. He will use anyone and anything to win this war. Even at the expense of his own happiness.

Nikolas sees a way to get what he wants through Sophia though she refuses to be anyone’s pawn. As their animosity rises, so does their attraction to one another. When Isabeau unleashes her fiercest fighters to stop Nikolas and Sophia, they will have to set aside their differences and band together if they want to survive what is coming.

Moonshadow is the first in a new trilogy that spins off of Harrison’s best-selling Elder Races. Set in the UK, Harrison expands on the ongoing dark Fae demesnes storyline that has weaved itself in and out of the main series. Easily read as a standalone, new and long time fans will able to sink right into this new world and character influx with nary a bump.

I’ve been a huge fan of Harrison’s since she released Dragon Bound and introduced us to the Elder Races. This explosive series gave PNR a much needed shot in the arm with its fantastic world building, dynamic characterization, and an arc brimming with suspense, intrigue, humor, and plenty of sexy romance that has kept me enthralled ever since. I was pleased to see Harrison diving into the Fae demesnes and their long standing war. The clues and engaging bits of information she has dropped throughout the series hinted at an epic storyline well worth the wait. Unfortunately, I wasn’t all that impressed with this first installment.

The story opens with Sophia in America. She is doing a reading and in a vision, she finds herself face to face with an unknown, gorgeous man. She disrupts the vision and wonders how and why this man was able to see her and if this is an omen about her future.

Sophia Ross worked with the LAPD as a witch consultant until she was shot multiple times while on assignment. On an indefinite leave of absence and unsure what to do with her life, she meets with Dr. Kathryn Shaw and learns that she has been named in Dr. Shaw’s late father’s will. If she can gain entrance to the Shaw family mansion in the UK within in 90 days, she will own it, all of its possessions, and the land free and clear. Built as a monument of victory on a broken crossover passageway (a gateway between Earth and the other worlds) the family abandoned the home when ‘it’ stopped letting people enter. Sophia jumps at the chance to learn more about her origins and leaves immediately for the UK. Her arrival drops her into the middle of a war when she rescues an abused dog and meets Nikolas Sevigny.

Nikolas Sevigny is the leader of the Daoine Sidhe Knights of the Dark Court. Considered abominations because of their multiple bloodlines, the Queen of the Light Court has made it her mission to destroy them all. Trapped on Earth centuries ago when Queen Isabeau’s Captain of the Hounds, Morgan le Fae, destroyed their only way of getting home, Nikolas and his remaining knights have searched tirelessly to find a way home while avoiding death. When he scents a familiar fae he’s been looking for, the trail leads him to Sophia.

Tempers flare….wills clash…and a destiny awakens…

Moonshadow takes place in a relatively short span of time. It was hard to narrow down an exact time frame because of the time shifts between Earth and the other worlds. I estimate everything occurred in a two week span-give or take a few days. I found this short time frame didn’t allow for the storyline nor the romance to evolve as naturally as I expected. It was very rushed and forced in some places. The development occurs on a singular level, not allowing for any real depth or exploration. We are given the bare bones of the conflict at hand and the characters involved. This book essentially sets up the world and conflict, staying in the present and leaving me feeling there was so much missing. The flow was off , the pace uneven, and the narrative choppy.

The romance also wasn’t a sell for me. I adore the trope of antagonistic attraction, something Harrison excels at, but this is one time I felt it didn’t work. Sophia is very independent and self-sufficient. Nikolas’s autocratic behavior rubs her the wrong way and she reacts in a sarcastic and at times a juvenile manner. The brief background we learn about her does explain the basis of her nature but she goes overboard and by the end, I was exhausted by her.

I couldn’t see why this couple fell in love. From their first meeting to their final declaration of love, I felt they were more infatuated with one another than anything else due to being forced into a volatile situation and having to depend on one another. While I could understand the attraction; both are intelligent, loyal, hard working, and extremely self-sacrificing, there wasn’t enough time for them to get to know one another much less fall head over heels. Sophia repeatedly refers to Nikolas as an arsehole and snarks at him when she feels he is ordering her around. She claims to dislike him and initiates sex with no strings, then gets angry when he agrees and distances himself. Her insults are framed as foreplay.

Nikolas is not much though I understood his reasoning better. He is much older than Sophia and has been fighting one war or another for most of his life. He knows the dangers around them and while he tends to react with anger over Sophia’s actions, it’s out of concern for her well-being.

As always, Harrison writes some steamy, chemistry boosted, love scenes and while I enjoy them greatly, I will admit I am prejudiced against the word spurt. It’s a whimsical word that works well (in my opinion) in erotic and or comedic romances but felt very out of place in the seriousness of the storyline and characters.

A cast of interesting secondary characters are brought in to round out the story and I’m looking forward to seeing each shine in their predestined roles. Many new faces and some old ones make an appearance. We meet the other knights and the Puck (Robin) holds a strong place in the story. The most intriguing character to me was Morgan la Fae. Harrison hints a few times that there is more to him than what meets the eye and I’m interested in seeing how and even if she redeems him.

All in all Moonshadow was a disappointment when compared to the jewels I have read from Harrison. I’m hoping this is just an anomaly and the second book in this trilogy takes us back to her normally exceptional works.

What a fabulous debut into a new spin off series from Author Thea Harrison.

WOW!! This spin off series is a must read. I love the Elder Races books, but here we up our game. We go from the US to the UK and dig deeper into the Light and Dark Fae courts. You don’t have to have read the Elder Races series to enjoy this passionate adventure. It’s a whole new experience.

Moonshadow is intense, action-packed, and full of memorable and magnificent characters. It’s suspenseful, powerful, and cruel. The story moves quickly, sucks you in, and is well balanced with the right amount of humor, passion, and love. I couldn’t put the book down.

Nikolas and Sophie dominate the story, but we are introduces to a extraordinary cast of characters that I’m looking forward to revisiting. What got me hooked and going was the powerful vision Sophie has of a powerful mysterious paranormal man at the start.

I enjoyed how the author gives you little tidbits about Sophie here and their throughout the story. I also liked how Sophie and Nikolas butted heads. They have this connection that works, even with all the head butting, and once they give in, oh boy, do the sparks fly.

I am in love with this new series where we move to the English countryside, dive into new characters, and a whole new world. Moonshadow was an unforgettable adventure and a delightful read. I can’t wait for the next installment. This is Thea Harrison at her best; fans will be pleased and new ones will be made.

Jan. 2019 Audio: This is a re-read/listen. I loved reading, but man did the audio blow me away. Sophie Eastlakes did a fabulous job with the narration of this book. I’m really glad that she was able to do this spinoff series. Her English accents was spot on. Recommend audio.

Once upon a time in a faraway kingdom, okay Germany. There was a girl, okay young woman, alright, alright a woman who has been enchanted by Thea Harrison. This girl ah woman was born with a book in her hand. Sadly no but I wish. She liked to read, ah loved to read and if she had her way she would tell everyone to leave her alone because books. Need I say more?

One day when scouring the vast kingdom of Netgalley she came across a hidden gem of a book. With little hope she requested it and didn’t think about it till the afternoon where a pigeon dropped a note, okay so I got an email that I had been approved. I did a happy dance and started reading Moonshadow straight away.

“Standing in a shadow cast by the moon reveals a person’s true nature to those with the ability to see it.”

Sophie Ross is currently on leave from the LAPD after being shot. She needs time to recuperate but it is taking too much time. She can’t seem to move on. Until she is asked to meet with Dr. Kathryn Shaw, Sophie decides to do a reading.

What the royal fuck was that? She had never experienced anything like that, and she had been practicing magic for as long as she could remember.

The good doctor has been looking for the children that her father saved. This family tradition has been going on for years and so far the house has stayed closed. Known as the family albatross. Very amusing. When fate comes knocking on your door to gain a house that you've never seen the inside or outside of. To receive an annuity. To heal without worrying about money. The catch? The house is stubborn. It just won't let anyone in. But what’s a girl to do? Travel to England of course.

The plot thickens what with Sophie finding a lost and abused dog. An interaction with the man from her vision and a spooky, stubborn house. Add in a couple dozen of Hounds and getting involved in a plot that has been going on for hundreds of years. Let's not forget the hunky, old timey folk that has a chip on his shoulder. Well it has been a very long time.

Sophie Ross is a good female leading character I can’t really say if I liked her or not. There were times were she was pretty kick arse but there were other times where her attitude was a bit too much for to liking. She is a rare occurrence and I love that she has Djinn blood.

Nikolas and his brothers are the stranded Daoine Sidhe Knights of the Dark Court. When the crossover passageways were brought to a fall due to Isabeau and Morgan Le Fae they have been stuck on Earth, slowly their numbers diminished leaving only nine of them left. Hope is lost and taking a last stand is coming nearer and nearer. They are the rarest of the Elder Races as they have blood of three races in them. Some call them monsters or abominations.

That is until a clever witch crosses their path with the Puck and all hell breaks loose. With hope comes betrayal, heartache and pain. Nikolas and Sophie don’t really like one another but then lines begin to blur. Nik gains back some of his compassion although as a leader he is loyal and true to his people even if he does behave like an arse in Sophie’s eyes anyway. But the animosity is slowly replaced with lust and love.

When he had finished, he pressed a kiss to her fingers and whispered. “You still make me. So. Crazy.” She loved him so much it twisted her up inside. Stroking his lips with her thumb she smiled and whispered back, “And you’re still very much an asshole.”

Nikolas thinks she’s suicidal but I think that she is courageous. For the fact that Nik and Sophie bickered a lot of one another I found it highly amusing and normally stuff like that bothers me but this didn’t.

The love has to be bigger than everything else and In this case through ups and downs it is.
This is a fantastic start to a brand new series. Where for once the setting is in England and the countryside. The world building and the trickle of information that we get so that we don’t feel overwhelmed is spot on. I liked that the Dark Court is actually seen to be good and that the Light Court isn’t. Role reversal. I like it.

The enchantress Thea Harrison had captivated me with her writing style already two years ago but with all things books and they can be so pretty and shiny and captivating I was sidetracked to my despair only six days ago I order the first 8 books in the Elder Race Series.

It has a Lord of the Rings vibe to it. Now I don’t think that any J.R. Tolkien fans will actually read my review but let me emphasize the fact that it has a vibe to it. Nothing more, nothing less.
Fingers crossed the other books come soon and the second book is going to be released in 2017 and I can’t wait.

If you have read and enjoyed the Elder Races books then this spin off series is a must read. No longer set in the US, the action has moved to the UK although as it heavily involves the Fae expect both the Light and the Dark courts to feature as things progress.
Ok essentially our story begins when Sophie is offered the opportunity of a lifetime and it's exactly what she needs. As a witch consultant with the police she has recently survived terrible injuries that haunt her. The chance to possibly put her natural skills to use and open up a mysterious mansion in the English countryside, not to mention discover things about her missing parents is too good to pass up. Yet what Sophie hadn't counted on was ending up slap bang in the middle of a war with the most annoying and overbearing commander trying to tell her what to do! Nikolas may be in charge of his unit but there's no way he's telling Sophie what to do . The sparks fly , the attraction they share is incandescent but with enemies quite literally banging on the door there's just not enough time for a relationship but what if their love is bigger than anything else?
I remember how the Fae were touched on in the Elder Races so it's wonderful to see the other side of them here. I had fun spotting someone who was introduced back in Pia Saves the Day so I'm hoping for even more delicious crossovers in the books to come. Sophie and Nik quite rightly dominate this story but the author introduces characters that I'm hoping she will revisit soon. There's definitely a couple of hunks teasing us but there's also a villain who unless I'm mistaken perhaps isn't as bad as he's painted but if he is to be redeemed I doubt it will be anytime soon. Oh and if you delight in her somewhat sweet and quirky characters ( Peanut anyone? ) then prepare to fall hard for Robin the Puck! So standby for fireworks as Sophie and Nik butt heads , prepare to feel right at home in the English countryside and get sucked into a whole new world by this wickedly talented author.

3/5; 3 stars; B

I liked this book but I didn't rate it higher than three stars because it didn't wow me or intrigue me.

Thea Harrison writes a good solid PNR story and I will continue reading this trilogy as well as the Elder Races books. However, I am starting to hear that little voice in the back of my head saying 'wrap up this series'.

Every so often I am reminded how much I truly enjoy Thea Harrison. I have not loved every single one of the Elder Races books equally, but I absolutely adored this one. This is actually something of a spin off, set in the world of Elder Races but outside of the ongoing story line. So if you’ve never tried those books, this is a fantastic place to jump in.

The heroine is an American police consultant recovering from a shooting. Her entire future opens up when she learns she may be heir to a mysterious castle. All she has to do is figure out a way in. So Sophie travels across the pond, hoping to unlock the mystery and change her life.

That’s where she crosses paths with the sexy man she first encountered in a vision. Nikolas is one of a handful of Dark Fae Knights cut off from their homeworld. He is powerful, arrogant, and bossy. Totally wrong for Sophie, but impossible to resist.

It turns out Sophie’s new castle may be the key to Nik’s future. So they end up thrown together, as Sophie becomes a target for his enemies. They have to protect each other and work as a team to unearth the castle’s secrets. But it’s a dangerous job. And it’s made even more difficult by the fact that they can’t go five minutes without sniping at each other.

These two are like oil and water. And I loved it. Nik has absolutely no idea how to interact with an independent woman. She may not be as strong as he is, but she is resourceful and has her own gifts which cannot be denied. She may make bad choices in men, but she knows her worth and she stands up for herself, which I love.

The sexual tension between them is phenomenal. The payoffs were written to perfection. The love is kind of Insta, but there’s so much great stuff happening in the story it didn’t bother me the way it normally does. And the heroine is smart enough to recognize that they need to take a little more time before they make any permanent arrangements. So kudos for that.

There are some memorable side characters here too, like the puck who really has a pivotal role. I would also like to see more of Nick’s best friend and our villain, Morgan. I feel like there is more to him than meets the eye and I am excited to unwrap that mystery.

Basically, I just loved this book. It is funny and smart and sexy as hell. It’s got action and romance and great world building. The best PNR I have read this year. Can’t wait for the next installment.

Eh. 2.5 stars rounded up to 3 because it's well written. It's just kind of boring. I like a strong heroine who knows how to stand up for herself even against much stronger people, but Sophie takes it a bit too far. Even when someone tells her to do something she agrees with, she has to make a big production about how she is doing it only because she wants to do it. I liked that Sophie apparently came up with her own unique system of drawing magic on her skin as her way of protecting herself offensively and defensively, however her exact powers as a half-dijinn are never explained. The 'Light Court' and the 'Dark Court' aren't fully fleshed out either. What makes them different? Why do they not like each other? What powers do they have? The mystery of the house that can't be opened is solved with laughable ease - she literally gets it on the first try. The final battle at the end, because all PNR/fantasy novels always end with a battle, is almost just a footnote to the story with how sparingly it is described. I just wish there was something more: to the plot, to the worldbuilding, and to the characters. Like I said, eh.

I was surprised that with the Elder Races series proper not yet complete that Thea Harrison has started another series in the same world. Set in England this time it introduces us to another part of this world with the Knights of the Dark Court led by the battle weary Nikolas who have been locked out of their demense by the evil Queen Isabeau of the Light Court. Enter the part Djinn Sophie Ross in England on a quest of her own and watch the sparks fly between these two unlikely lovers.

The segue into another part of the Elder Races was well done and I do enjoy this world. Just a few niggles with this one. Early on in the book within the same chapter there was inconsistency in the spelling of the hero's name which should have been picked before publishing and the continual use of a certain swear word by the heroine towards the hero did grate a bit.

So I'll just lower my rating to 3.5 stars for this one.

I enjoyed the story, liked the MCs, the paranormal elements were detailed and well done. The romance was good but it would have been better if the hero didn't play hot and cold throughout the whole story. I loved their banter and the heroine's insistence that she can make her own decisions, but I wanted her to make him pay for his hesitation about her and grovel, for her to accept him. I hate when it's all up to the male lead who does nothing to win the heroine's affection.

A wonderful paranormal romance with a kickass magical heroine and Sidhe hero who has to adjust to love and a strong woman.

The world building is wonderful and the magic the heroine uses is clever and interesting.

We are in the same world as the Elder Races but we don't see the characters we know so well, but that is okay because we get a great cast of brothers in arms.

I like the hero very much in all his tortured angry warrior self but the heroine steals the show of me.

She is kind, brave, fierce, human (kinda) and never gives up her values and forces a relationship of equality with the hero. Good stuff.

You will love this action packed paranormal romance.

I was given this book for my honest review. So there you have it!

Sophie is a witch consultant with the LAPD. When a woman approaches her and offers her information about her birth parents and makes her an irresistible offer she decides to take it. Nikolas is a commander of the Dark Court who is stranded on earth with several others and they are fighting for their very survival.

When he find out that Sophie has knowledge and abilities that can help his brothers survive he decides to use her without conscience but fails miserably.

The romance is one of those hate to love romances. The two find each other incredibly attractive yet downright exasperating...which leads to some funny moments and banter.

I really enjoyed the story and the various magic uses (such as land magic). In fact I was so engrossed in the story I was beginning to dislike it every time Sophie and Nikolas would stop to get intimate. It seemed that these were slowing down what was otherwise a very fast paced and thoroughly engrossing story.

I enjoyed the idea of a magical house which refused to let people in and I also liked the explanation when the puzzle was solved. Also loved the suspense of the final battle. I couldn't wait to see how they were going to fight it out with such tough odds against them.

Would definitely recommend it all PNR lovers!

Another pnr-verse where magical creatures move openly in modern society. In this version, the witch-heroine, Sophie gets involved in a war between the dark and light courts of the fae with the dark court being the good-guys. Using temporary tattoos to wield magic that throw baddies across a room and a gun with silver bullets for stopping werewolves, Sophie rushes in to danger. She knows it's not smart, but she's more interested in saving the innocent and friends than preserving herself. Nik, the super-sexy fae warrior meets all the hero requirements although I could have used a little less of the 'enemies to lovers' trope.

I had a little trouble getting in to it. The author kept hinting around about trauma in Sophie's past but took forever to deal with it. It didn't build dramatic tension so much as annoy. I also struggled with Nik's constant attempts to keep Sophie out of danger when she earns her living as police consultant and early on proves capable with both her spell-slinging tats and gun. Add in that woman warriors are common among the fae, and it just didn't quite work.

That said, Moonshadow is a fun creative read with an endearing heroine.
