Soooooo.... this one was weird. Horse guy merges with woman... Matrix left a bunch of herself behind and it comes back.... Resurrection Man... Apoklypis.... All over the place here. Not bad, but just not for me... One more volume to read, so we'll see how that one goes.

I wasn't as sold on the third book as I was on the first two. I really liked how clear the storytelling was in the previous volumes despite all the weirdness, in this one it's a little less perfect and it creates some confusing moments. The standouts parts are definitely Wally's character and the last story, it features some wonderfully gruesome art that I loved.

The rest of the book meanders a lot and never fully delivers: the politically themed story didn't resonate with me (it would have been strangely topical around 2016 when this collection was published, though), the horse/angel/lesbian character was really strange, and an even weirder love interest than the guy Linda was dating before. The Apokolips story had a lot of potential but it was the part where the lack of clarity hit the hardest. Also the gimmick of people merging with each other or having weird connections with strangers starts to get tiresome at some point.

Still a surprisingly good read and honestly so different from most other comics that it couldn't not be worth it, but a little weaker than the previous stuff.

Peter David's run on Supergirl is, and I think always will be, controversial especially who think of Supergirl as the cousin of Superman. That was something David had no control over. DC was insisting on keeping Matrix. They just wanted someone to try to make it interesting and the only writer who had any how to do it.

The result is a mix of horror, comedy, fantasy, religious commentary, complete insanity with a few stories tying into the greater DC Universe. (In this volume it is kept to a minimum as the only major crossovers are kept to Resurrection Man, a tie in to the 1,000,000, and a guest spot by Superman.

Supergirl: Book Three

Life appears to be settling down for Linda Danvers and her parents are coming to terms with her alter ego, Supergirl. However, things begin to change when Cutter becomes Supergirl's manager and he sets out to improve her reputation.

A fun, strange, satisfying plot with some themes about hiding your true identity from your loved ones and yourself. David approaches the queer attraction between Andrea and Linda in a non judgmental way, helping to normalise "alternate" lifestyles as they were still seen in the 90s. The artwork is brash and explodes onto the page.

DC - "Well, Peter David, good news! We'd like to hire you to write Supergirl!"

Peter David - "That's great! I have all these ideas of horse people and pink blob corpse monsters, parents in their 50's reigniting their sex life and angel/demon romances!"

DC- "Right, so, we're excited... wait. What did you say?"

Peter David - "Which part? The horse or the hot angel-on-demon action?"

DC - "Hey, for fun, on the count of 3, let's both say what book you think we're talking about. One...two...three..."

Peter David/DC - "Supergirl!"

DC - "Well, as long as we're on the same page"

Another fine volume, featuring the secret of Comet and the return of Mae (sort of), really showing that PAD's Supergirl respected both its past and its present.

However, this volume is dragged down somewhat by crossovers. The Resurrection Man crossover is a fine read, but it comes out of nowhere and it interrupts the Supergirl stories already in progress. The DC 1 Million story meanwhile is awful. (Sorry, PAD.)

Nonetheless, aside from that 1 million annual: a fine read.

Wow. This is considered a legendary run by Peter David but its bonkers. Its bizarre, rambling, corny, and totally not as progressive as its billed. David does such weird things to the character and her powers/origins. Its truly insane. Leonard Kirk's work is decent for the era but there isn't a lot he could to do fix this train wreck. Overall, an enormous miss.

Fun book, although the Resurrection Man crossover spun its wheels and the One Million issue didn't land. Overall, these issues seem to lose some momentum (I just don't find Comet (or Andy) at all compelling), although the Earth Angel mythology is still intriguing and the relationship of Linda and her parents remains excellently realized.

Awful!!!

How did this junk last a year? Silly parental issues. Plus, how could you possibly do a New Gods story so wrong?

Linda Danvers as Supergirl is okay but it had so much potential to be great. The previous volumes were so slow but I zipped this as quickly as I could because I couldn’t stand the story.
