Mayra Santos-Febres is a Puerto Rican author, poet, novelist, professor of literature, essayist, and literary critic and author of children's books. Her work focuses on themes of diaspora identity, female sexuality, the erotic, gender fluidity, desire, and power.
In Spanish. This is a collection of writings based on thought and events that the author had on a series of runs through the tourist districts of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The book is not for tourists, nor about tourism - this just happens to be the neighborhood where she lives (and so do I). The book is also not about running, though she uses her running as a unifying element for these writings. Organized like short stories or essays, the narrative reveals the author's life almost unintentionally as she talks about her thoughts and emotions. I found it to be an excellent read,a book that I will re-read both for inspiration for my own writing and as a springboard for exploring many of the themes she introduces. Those themes will really resonate with women readers.
