Y Knot, Montana Territory, 1887 Shad Petty is a cowhand, plain and simple, whose days are filled with riding for the McCutcheon brand. There’s no room in his life for a woman, let alone a female with obvious means who is completely out of his reach. Unfortunately, the candid Miss Ford captures his heart and his simple life is turned topsy-turvy from that point on.
Pampered socialite Poppy Ford rarely listens to direction. Her father has indulged her every whim and she’s been a dutiful daughter until now…when she decides to visit her sister in Y Knot without his permission. All too soon, Poppy learns the Montana wilderness is not Boston. She's thrust into danger of her own making and the results are a matter of life or death. When the roughhewn cowboy named Shad offers his help, she begins to see him in a different light. Can two such completely different people find love? Or will circumstances keep them apart?
USA Today Bestselling Author Caroline Fyffe was born in Waco, Texas, the first of many towns she would call home during her father's career with the US Air Force. A horse aficionado from an early age, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in communications from California State University-Chico before launching what would become a twenty-year career as an equine photographer. She began writing fiction to pass the time during long days in the show arena, channeling her love of horses and the Old West into a series of Western historicals. Her debut novel, Where the Wind Blows, won the Romance Writers of America's prestigious Golden Heart Award as well as the Wisconsin RWA's Write Touch Readers' Award. She and her husband have two grown sons and live in the Pacific Northwest.
There was little to no romance build up between Shad and Poppy. Too much writing about the other couples from previous books. There seemed little focus on the main couple who I didn't care for much.
Shad was injured in an accident and told he cannot father children. Poppy was from a wealthy family, spoiled, but became humbled during her time in Y Knot.
Shad had previous relations with other women, but no details. Just enough hints about him and Fancy Aubrey the town saloon girl to put me off.
Didn't care about either the H or h at all. Seemed like the author is getting burned out writing about the series.
I have read at least sixteen books by this author in the past and have awarded an average of four stars for her efforts, so I do not fault the author for my decision to abort reading this book after reading only about 14% of the book. I take full responsibility for not having adhered to the admonition to read the writings of this series in sequence. There is a good reason for this caution. Each book tells a story and introduces characters; however, “The McCutcheon Family Series” is an actual series. Each book builds on the foundation of the previous books in the series and adds new characters who continue in supporting roles in future books. I read all the books available in the series through book eight, which I finished in April 2016. Book nine in the series was published on 1/12/17. I just recently elected to read books nine and ten to end the series. Unfortunately, as I began reading, I could recall only a few names of prior characters. I elected to keep a list of characters as they were introduced together with a short note of where they fit into the story. At the 14% mark, my list included about 40 characters. The effort to keep them straight became so burdensome that I elected to abort reading the book.
What a wonderful addition to the McCutcheon Series as Ms. Fyfee doing as only she can reaching out taking you in with her beautiful scenes and wonderful characters that leaves you breathless and captivated. What a pleasure is was revisiting the town of Y Knot and the characters from past stories. I have been hooked for the very first McCutchenon story loving the town and all the people in it. Ms Fyfee pulls on your emotions with her wonderful writing style of love, helping others, thief of food and lantern oil, strength and courage giving you an emotional read that really pulls on your heartstrings.
What I love about this whole series is the nice clean fun the author gives with Christian values that are not over powering. Each book is a standalone that brings past characters and event to play in a way you never feel lost. You can read just one or all, always knowing just what is going on touching on important parts leaving you with a smile and a few laughs along the way.
Mr. Snow as always his narration is outstanding with his wonderful voice and many different characters make the audio come alive. He has a strong emotional voice that you could listen to all day. I had no trouble knowing who is talking or what they were feeling. His male voices are just as wonderful as his females one. The variations in gender flowed was easy giving you a wonderful clean, clear and crisp audio listen. I found the voices to be very appropriate, the tones matched what he was reading. He put the chuckles, laughs and tempter in where they needed to be which added so much to the read. His tones were raised or lowered just right giving lots of emotion and meaning to the story. The plot flows easy and without interruption as Mr. Snow puts the correct voice to the correct character which gave life to this listen. I found the recording to be to be free of background noises with no change in volume it was smooth, if there was any editing done or breaks taken you cannot tell it. The total performance is outstanding. I can’t wait for the next book in this series to listen more of his work.
This story starts off with one of the worst blizzards in history has hit the Montana territory. The McCutcheon’s send their men out to other ranches and to the town to see what they can do to help. Everyone is fighting to keep everyone alive when low on fuel, warmth and food it becomes a trying time for the town. Shad Petty gets his story of love with a women way out of his league. He is very happy living his bachelorhood life until he sets eyes on Poppy who comes to visit her sister. Poppy has been spoiled and use to getting her way must learn life isn’t just about her and her wants. She most overcome this to get the man of her dreams. As the story goes on Poppy blooms learning that she is more than what people think she is turning into a delightful lady her sister can be proud of as well as showing Shad just what she is made of. Shad has a few things to learn as well not everything is as it seems, people can change right before your eyes, things are not always as they seem.
Ms. Fyfee is such beautiful detail in her stories you have no trouble picturing the scenes in your mind as the story comes alive. Picking up and starting this story was like coming home to a long lost family you haven’t seen in a while being pulled into their embraces and love that you never want to leave them again. This was a big winner for me leaving me with a book I could not put down reading it all at one setting. I was captivated with all that is going on taking you from one event into another knowing at times this could be life or death. This is one author that does her research pulling in with true facts why hooking her reader with love, emotion and danger. I love the characters it was a delight watching them grow and learn. Watching Shad and Poppy fall in love was so much fun at time I found myself cheering for Shad with his strong beliefs that at times got him in trouble. It really was a story full of family values, love with powerful emotions. Seeing past characters and catching up with them was just icing on the cake for me.
No one writes a historical western like this author, she knows just where to pull you in, giving you characters and scenes that are so vivid you are hooked almost for the first page. This is a delightful standalone but with this series it is a 5 star plus. Pick this book up you will understand why she has always been one of my go to author for excitement, love, emotions, compaction, filled with family values.
This is the story of Shadrack, a ranch hand at the Montana McCutcheons' ranch, and Poppy, Kathryn's sister. I love how these books continue the story of characters we meet in previous books, so you're never really left wondering, or at least not for long. I struggled with the rating for this book because I didn't like the way it ended, but I'm hoping, in the last book, things will be taken care of. I hate loose ends in books, but I know that's pretty common in series. Anyway, several states are plunged into the heart of a ruthless winter. Supplies are running short, people in town are congregating at the hotel to try to conserve supplies, people on the surrounding ranches are isolated from everyone else, and Evie and Chance are about to bring their first child into the world. Evie sincerely hopes Chance will be home when the child is born, but she's not due for another month yet, so she doesn't think she has anything to worry about. Poppy has come to visit Kathryn and has selfishly brought Oscar with her, the man their father had promised Kathryn to when she was still a baby. To Poppy's credit though, she really didn't want Oscar to come, but true to form, he forces himself into whereever he wants to be. Poppy has made the decision to return to Boston. She's going to Paris for art school and needs to get out of Montana before the stage stops for the winter, but she's waited too long. Shad finds himself in town during the blizard, helping keep things in control at the hotel. Poppy seems like the last person he'd ever be attracted to, but a collapsing roof, kidnapped children and rationing supplies tends to bring out the worst...or the best in people. Is Poppy going to find a side of herself she never knew, or is she going to remain the self-centered brat everyone knows her to be? And we can't forget about the wolves. All of the animals, ranch herds included, are being ravaged by the storm, and more wolves than anyone has ever seen before are growing bold in their efforts to find food. Ranchers and townspeople alike are finding themselves not only at risk because of the weather, but when they finally can make it outside, they're at risk because of hungry wolves, too. Overall, I may not have liked the way this book ended, but the book as a whole was a good one.
This story shows how people can change under severe circumstances. Poppy was very selfish and self centered and did not understand how or why her sister had become a mail order bride. Even when she went to visit and saw how Kathryn and Tobit were in love. Especially when Kathryn had lost her memory but proved that she could adapt to farm life. In her story, "Kathryn." Shad and Poppy and other guest are stranded in a severe snowstorm and with out enough food and oil they have to ration everything to stay warm in the Hotel they are in. Not only that there were wolves that were attacking. In the hotel, there were a couple who had kidnapped some children so when they found out the truth, Poppy was happy. Although Shad wanted to be with her, he felt that due to an injury he couldn't have children, but if they were married, they were going to take the children. Other characters in the story, Evie had her baby and there some deaths and lots of cattle died as well. Roady and Sally sent a telegram to her brother to warn Mr. Eric Greenstien about what he did and to protect her family. And then Roady sent a telegram to Green...warning him.
I like the stories a lot. I think it's historical about Montana and the years of blizzards because several authors state the same type of occurance around the same years of 1886-9.
Caroline Fyffe has packed many of her characters from previous books in the series into this story, so the romance between Shadrack and Poppy seems to intermingle rather than stand out. This is not a criticism as the full force of the story centres on the huge blizzard of 1887 and the interaction of the characters during it. It was beautifully written (if you can describe a blizzard as beautiful) and had a huge impact on me. The description of the hardships, endurance, losses, fear, friendships and reliance on one another came across crystal clear as each scenario was played out. Life went on, but the grittiness of life and the tough spirit of people in a bad Montana winter shone through the pages. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, in fact I think it was the best in the series for its writing and visual impact.
I loved this story about Shad and Poppy. Poppy hears her brother=in-law talking about how spoiled she is and how she never helps her sister, so she decides to go home. She came with a friend, Oscar and they move to the hotel just before a snowstorm hits and lasts for three days.
During her stay a family with three small children come to stay at the hotel, frozen from being in the storm. Poppy helps everyone she can and Oscar complains the entire time. He tells her she's becoming a servant and at home she has servants.
When food becomes scarce Poppy saves hers for the children. Shad stays and protects the poeple in the hotel and talks to Poppy whenever he can but he has a secret that will keep them apart.
It is a joy to return to Y Knot and see how past characters are doing as well as get to know new characters. Poppy and Shad are dynamic and strong. I enjoyed watching them get to know each other as they selflessly served others. While it is always fun to peek into the lives of characters from previous books, I felt there were too many story lines going on in this book. I wanted to see more of Shad and Poppy and less of everyone else. Still, the strong values and wholesome goodness portrayed in this story will keep me coming back for more!
Carolyn Fyffe has written a wonderful story about a Montana cowboy and a spoiled wealthy young self centered girl from Boston. The two main characters could not be more different, but through countless twists and turns they fight the elements and themselves. A large part of the story takes place in a sub zero Montana blizzard that is so well written that I had to put on a jacket in spite of the New Orleans weather at the end summer. I recommend the book highly to any one who enjoys well a written western.
What a fantastic book I absolutely loved it and it brought other couples into the story who I had already read about in previous books learning how they were all getting on making you feel as if you were a neighbour in there town watching the goings on and of coz the attraction building between Poppy and Shad. The weather made me feel cold just reading about it.
At first this book felt wrong because the cast of characters is complex. Not your normal romance where right away you focus on the couple of the book. In this there are many couples and you get to see them all while getting to watch the main romance couple. On one hand that turned out cool. On the other it was tough at first as it breaks the traditional romance expectations. But it is a great book.
This book kept me at edge since the very beginning. Excitement , drama, action and love are all woven together in this wonderful book. I think so far its my favorite of the series. Shad and Poppy come from very different worlds but are thrust into chaos when the worst winter storm in history sets in. Lives change for the better and worst but the people of Y know come through it all like they always do.
An action filled book of one winter in Montana. Poppy came to visit her sister Kathryn and stayed too long. When she tried to leave the stage line had already stopped running for winter. This is part of a series. If you haven’t read the series then you may be lost by the number of people that are actively part of this book. But it is an exciting book with lots of self introspection for Poppy and Shad.
I've been enjoying this series a lot, but every long series has a book or two that I might not like as much. This was one of those. Shad Petty is a cowboy who becomes involved with Poppy Ford, a wealthy socialite who came to Montana to visit her sister. While I like Shad well enough, I found Poppy hard to take. Ultimately, her redemption arc came too late for me, but I do like the series and will continue on.
This book gave readers a new couple, more adventures for previous characters, and fun new characters. All wrapped up in the intensity of an epic snowstorm (which did happen during the real winter of 1887). I loved it and may read it again on a hot August day when I again want to imagine a snowstorm outside.
I just loved Montana Courage, and Poppy in particular. What a Fun, believable young, pampered lady. The change that occurred happened slowly, which makes it so believable. The tragic twists and turns again kept me reading to the end. I hate to think that there is only one more in this series. Thanks Forsyth a great read!!!!
Full of characters and stories, it's a bit like a soap opera. Took me awhile to figure everyone out. I probably knew them from previous books but had forgotten. It would be best to read in order and not eat while reading. I consumed a half can of chips without realizing because of the action in the story. I was eating as fast as the story was moving in the snow storm.
Wow! What a wonderful story. The McCutcheon family and all of their friends make a hard story to explain. This is a bout the trials of living in Montana and the blizzard of 1887. Each family suffered loss and some found new happiness during this trial in their life. I just know you will enjoy this as much as I did
I love the fact that there is always an exciting adventure in these books. Oh the wolves, that was a thrilling adventure. I highly recommend Caroline Fyffe. Here series keep getting better and better. I look forward to the next book in the series and the next adventure.
I couldn't put this book down. Caroline is a master story teller. This book is no exception. I was hooked from the first page. Heart of the Mountain ranch is the setting and Caroline takes you through a very harsh Montana winter weaving in all the characters that surround the ranch. I recommend reading the whole series. This book is fantastic in it's own right!
Did not want to put this one down, by far the best story I have read in a long while. Captivating and intriguing, I feel like I need to share with everyone how much I loved the characters and the admiration I have for the people who's life this time period touched.
Great story with a lot of action and great characters. At times it was difficult to keep all the people straight. There was a lot of backstory that I wasn’t sure I had read in previous books. Despite that, I was able to enjoy and understand the happenings. Exciting to the very end.
I loved the suspense, I loved all the different people's stories. I loved the ending I wanted shad and poppy together I'm looking now for book 7 I'll.........the suspense is killing Mr.
I really liked this serious, although going in, you know it will all end well. But the books have excitement and warmth and the characters are folks you'd wish you could know. And it gives a nice sense of the West as it was 150 years ago. An easy read that keeps you coming back for more.
Having never experienced a true blizzard I was enthralled by the bone chilling way the words made me feel it. Add fine character development, a really good story line and you have a winner.
Looking forward to reading the last book To this Siri. These nine books have been so great that the 10th and the end of the story must be fantastic. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys the early west.
This story was one that kept you on the edge of your seat! My, what a harsh winter! And our favorite families have to deal with all that it brings, from blizzards to wolves! Couldn't put it down! Great read!
I loved Shad's story as a part of the Mccutcheon family series. This can easily be read as a standalone book. Relatable characters, excellent storyline, beautiful setting. All combine to a great clean western romance!
