Something Borrowed, Something Blue

"Something borrowed, something blue. Something terrible will happen to you."

It's a bad neighborhood in Detroit, the kind of place where abandoned houses get stripped, then taken over by squatters, then burned. But it's about to get worse.

Across the street is a white van with those words spray-painted on the side in blue. It pulled up in the middle of the night without a sound. The windows are solid black glass. And it's watching you...

So fun

This was a lot of fun to read. I don't want to spoil anything but I will say I wonder about that van myself.

As rare as it is these days to find a truly well written horror story which draws the reader in and gets a grip, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, by DeAnna Knippling was a pleasant surprise. This novelette gives off a feeling that something ugly lies just below the surface, something that we can’t quite see, but the feeling says that the situation will not end well, and in that we are not disappointed. In the fashion of classic horror, this story makes readers want to say, “No! Stop!” even when it’s clear that events have already been set in motion and there is no turning back.

I'll be honest. I usually steer clear of novellas. Not because I don't like the story, but because I usually don't want the read to end within 20 minutes or so. Which is about how long it took me to read this one. BUT, this read. This read kept me engaged, and wanting to know more about...whatever it was. I loved the voice of the narrator; just the perfect mix of sanity and paranoia combined other odd musings that give life to this character.

If you like bite-size reads that will give you some chills, then this read is for you.

Kindle Unlimited but must have gotten it on a freebie day. Have read other things by this writer, not horror type ones, but figured it was short story and this writer so would give it a read through. Still not quite sure of the ending and what all led up to it, usually pretty good at the sort of reading between the lines thing, but at a bit of a loss, though overall was interesting story.

Fast read

Great story. Gets your attention from the first sentence. Retired Detroit workers, living in a bad neighborhood, trying to protect themselves.

This novella by DeAnna Knippling is a grabber. The writing is superb and hooks you from the get go. The story itself is a creepy tale that would make good Halloween reading for ... okay, not for young kids, but young adults would love it. It's set in Detroit, whether today or a couple of years from now is unclear and doesn't matter.
In a forgotten part of town, homeowners have turned their homes into actual castles, all they need is a moat to complete the picture. One morning, something is different. A van is parked outside one home and on the side is painted: "Something borrowed, something blue..." the rest of the message is for your to discover.
I highly recommend this story.
